MD & DO WAMC/School List (3.98 GPA/MCAT in March ORM)

3.97 cGPA and 3.93 sGPA psychology major

Have yet to take MCAT, but I expect around 510 based on practice exams (I know the MCAT will be especially important considering my degree and university)

600 hours as a patient care technician in-hospital, projected ~3200 after gap year

150 hours in psychology research, 150 in biochemistry research, one poster presentation

20 hours shadowing thoracic, 30 hours shadowing orthopedic

30 hours shadowing nurse anesthetist (I saw over a dozen unique operations and had the opportunity to essentially shadow the surgeons; would this be worth mentioning on my application?)

250 hours as patient companion/emotional support in hospice care facility

Cofounder and treasurer of club

I want to go into psychiatry, any additional recommendations for schools to apply to or things I can work on improving?

University of Hawaii, UC Davis, UFlorida, and I think Alabama have heavy bias towards people from their respective states/regions.

Meharry is an HBCU and Drew/UCLA primarily admits people who are african american or latino.

Northwestern and Vanderbilt are unfortunately probably donations with an MCAT of 510

I would strongly advise you to get an MSAR account and build your MD list around mission fit as well as stats. This list doesn't make a lot of sense considering the information you provided. When looking at MCAT the general suggestion is to apply to schools where you are at or above the 25th percentile. Best of luck you got this!

I have considered clinical psychology, but I'm particularly drawn to the physiological aspects of mental health in ways that are not as involved in clinical psychology. While I have not been a BHT, I have seen my fair share of how mental and physical health intersect through the course of my job as a PCT and the positive impact proper treatment and medication can have on an individual's life, well-being, and those around them. I also have a strong interest in pharmacology and psychotherapy, and I want to implement this knowledge into direct patient care. The culmination of these passions and goals makes psychiatry the ideal fit.

Thank you for the input. I had placed a few schools on this list that may be stretches in the chance that I get accepted, but it may be better to allocate that time to more realistic/OOS-friendly schools, depending on my MCAT. I will definitely be taking your advice into consideration.

You need an official MCAT score before you can seriously make "stretches" on the list. But you can narrow based on geographic preferences and mission fit.
