WAMC/school list advice: ORM, non-trad, 516 MCAT, 3.7 cGPA, 3.6 sGPA, OH

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Welcome to the forums.

What feedback have you received from your prehealth advising office?

How are you service oriented focusing on advocacy? I don't see it in your WAMC profile. You're a great promoter/proselytizer for your niche sport that you have played and coached for. That's where most of your list hours are.

Hi Mr. Smile,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly and thank you for the welcome! To be honest, I haven't been in much contact with my advisor/office since undergrad. I will admit, I didn't find much of their advice very helpful (as did many of my peers) on pre-med advising. Are you suggesting I should ask them for advice on my competitiveness?

As for the service orientation with focus on advocacy, you bring a good point. My involvement with the mental organization (providing mental health/resilience knowledge and resources (ie. presentations on identifying catastrophizing behaviors or dialectical behavior therapy based concepts) and spreading awareness), food rescue (assisting in community outreach cooking classes), and contract tracing (interacting with a lot of affected folks from underserved backgrounds and connecting them with health resources) I think brings an advocacy lens to my application. My coaching position, I would also argue, contributes to the advocacy component. As we advertise the program community wide to attract potential new players regardless of background (socioeconomic and otherwise). We also try to lower barriers to access especially since our sport has been known to be relatively expensive by providing free equipment and training.

Now that you mention it, I do see that my population of focus outside of the underserved isn't very clear though.

Any chance I could tap into your wisdom on my question about the non-science letter of rec, Mr. Smile?
Basically, I don't have a non-science professor letter of rec and I'm worried that if I do by some miracle manage to scrounge something up, it'll be lukewarm at best. My instinct is saying no (so far I haven't seen many schools that hard require it), but med school admissions is a crap-shoot already as it is.

Also @Faha, could I ask for your advise on an expanded school list? Do I have a shot at Mt. Sinai or other similar schools?

How many schools on your list require a non-science letter? Your instinct is correct.
