Date of submission: Early August (I believe I got verified the 8th)
Overall GPA: 3.4
Science GPA:
3.2
Bio-Chem-Physics GPA:
3.2
DAT score (include AA and all sections): AA 420, TS 430, GC 450, OC 410, BIO 420, RC 380, QR 440, PAT 420
State of Residence: Massachusetts

Undergrad Attended: University of Connecticut
Major: Physiology and Neurobiology
Minor: None
Minority? No
Reapplicant? No
Nontrad? No

Shadowing Experience: I have shadowed a General Dentist for about 120 hours, an Oral Surgeon for 50 hours and I worked in an orthodontic practice as a sterilization technician so I was able to shadow him and a pediatric dentist during my time there ( 300 hours over a 3 month summer last year)

Volunteering Experience: I have volunteered as my local church for 75 hours and as a youth lacrosse coach in my town for 75 hours

Employment: Other than my work as a sterilization technician, I work at a country club back home and have worked there for 5 years

Research: No research

Other Extracurriculars: I played lacrosse my freshman year here on the club team, I was Vice President of a club last year and have been apart of pre-dent society for 3 years. I also have done Tufts Pre-Dental Mentorship Program the last two years.

Relevant Honors or Awards: Deans List Spring 2025

LOR type and strength: I would consider this my very strong spot on my application. I sent 7 letters of rec as a committee letter, and besides one of them from a science professor that I had for two years and regularly attended his office hours (he was lazy and probably used a template to write mine) I got one from the general dentist, oral surgeon and orthodontist whom I have shadowed. I also got one from the science professor and another science professor who was a pre-dental advisor couple years ago whoI would regularly chat with, one from a gen-ed professor that I took an online class with and felt that my participation and the way I took the class would make for a good leadership letter and lastly is my high school lacrosse coach who over saw me in the youth lacrosse I would volunteer for.

Misc Info/Things not stated elsewhere/Red Flags:
I started my sophomore year of college in a rough spot at a 3.1 GPA but was able to show an upward trend getting it to a 3.4 come application time this summer. I had a C in both Gen Chem 1+2 , and I know that is rough but I think that being my highest sore on the DAT (450) will show them that I have developed better studying habits and able to retain knowledge better. I am hoping to end my senior year in the range of 3.5-3.6

School list:
-Boston University
-Augusta Georgia
-South Carolina
-NYU
-Rutgers
-Tufts
-Uconn
-University of Florida
-University of Maryland
-University of Michigan
-University of New England
-UNC
-UPENN

I chose the Tufts, BU, UNE, NYU, UCONN because I am from massachusetts and I am able to remain close enough to my family being an only child while having a fresh start. I also chose Rutgers because I have family there and we would go there every summer for vacation so its another place I have grown up. I chose the Carolinas because of the location and how nice it is, but I know they are a reach for me. UF, UMich and Georgia I chose because I am willing to travel a bit further but also the reputation these schools have from there students and word of mouth. UPenn I know also is a reach but I just figured why not try, also for its reputation as a dental program. Overall I want a school with a great background and strong community. Please let me know what you think of my application and also , since I applied Early August, I havent heard from anyone yet, is that something I should be worried about? Thank you!

Have you volunteered/shadowed/attended events at any dental schools? networking, volunteering in a D-school clinic, shadow faculty, etc.

Welcome to the forums.

OP: what was involved with the Tufts mentorship program?

A few thoughts: UNC, Michigan, and Penn are among the toughest, most competitive dental schools to get into. The metrics may not be a great fit. I mean, if you are going to apply to Penn and not Columbia or Harvard... Why did you skip over Temple?

South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida are very focused on in-state applicants. You must show a very strong tie or interest in serving the people in their state, especially rural communities. Your GPA doesn't help you, and the lack of specific community service (you don't give details about your church activities) is going to be a barrier. Youth lacrosse usually doesn't address the needs of resource-constrained communities; it's an extension of your athletics skills.

Is there a reason why you wouldn't consider Buffalo, VCU, or LECOM?

I have not, the only schools that I feel I have a slight connection to are Tufts because the general dentist and orthodontist I shadowed both are alumni, the oral surgeon I shadowed is an alumni of harvard and I did apply there because of that but in no means expect a reply.

The Tufts mentorship program was a monthly zoom call hosted by current dental students and addressed questions pertaining to Tufts School, as well as did powerpoint presentations on Tufts itself and pre-dental application help. The biggest thing was being paired with someone at the school and exchanging numbers, I would regularly text my mentor about questions I had so it was nice having someone to guide you through the process that is where you want to be in the future. I did apply to Harvard but again I know where my metrics stand , again only reason i did was because my Oral Surgeon wrote me a very strong letter and I didnt know how Harvard is with alumni relations. My church activites included helping set up for events, helping clean the church and maintaining the outside appearance. As well as for the youth lacrosse, I think it is different and helps tie me into an all around candidate because I have dealt with people at the church and dealing with younger age group of kids.

As for Buffalo,VCU and LECOM... Buffalo is in no where I would be happy. The location is a big part for me because I feel it will contribute either very positively of very negatively in my studies. Not saying I want somewhere to party of nightlife, but I am a peoples person and I want to be around people of the same field as me but also others to network. VCU I looked at but did not give me a good feeling and LECOM I know is a somewhat new program (first graduating class was 2016) but one of the doctors I worked with in the practice was a recent graduate from there so I heard its pros and cons.

How is temple, I have never heard anything about it?

I may be mistaken, but isn't UNE newer than LECOM?

If you have issues with Buffalo, I don't understand why you be happy in Augusta, Charleston, or Gainesville.

You are right, UNE is a year newer than LECOM but I would rather be near my family for a newer institution then further if that makes sense.

Also, I went to University of Buffalo for a couple nights and was not at all impressed. Forgive me for sounding in any way rude , but I think there is a big difference between Charleston Carolina as well as Gainsville then Buffalo. Augusta I liked the school look a lot, as well as being a big golfer it appelled to me.

the issue is your school list
three of the top 8-10 schools to get into in the US (outside of the texas schools)
-University of Michigan
-UNC
-UPENN

schools with STRONG in-state preference (and most OOS are VERY high stats)
-Augusta Georgia
-South Carolina
-University of Florida

so that leaves you with...
-Boston University
-NYU
-Rutgers
-Tufts
-Uconn
-University of New England

Agree. I heard that UConn is almost done with interview invites. Rutgers is ghosting a lot.
So the best possibility so far would be waiting for the spring interviews for other schools.

you went to uconn, but did not visit the dental school, participate in any events, nor went to any predental activities involving UConn?

UConn and Rutgers are also not OOS-friendly, having accepted ~ 2.13% and ~ 4.15% of OOS applicants for the Class of 2028, respectively.
