I want to talk about the things I have learned being a performer and later on a private instructor in college. I hear that you should not include things you did in high school and before. Does that mean these things are off limits in essays too?

As long as you’ve continued to pursue music post high school, you can definitely write about those experiences. I included my choral history in my primary (high school through college through gap year) and discussed it in some secondaries as well.

You can put anything you want in your essay, even if you didn't continue through college.
The work/activities (aka Experience or EC) section allows for 15 separate entries. There is no written rule that you can't include something done during HS and if you participated in the Olympics or did something exceptional like that I'd say that you should include it even if you did not continue in college. On the other hand, the common wisdom is that you should have 15 more recent items that take precident over things you did prior to HS graduation.

Strained metaphor is the bane of my existence.

True that but someone can write about learning to work as a team, muscle memory, learning through repetition, finding different ways to explain something that a student isn't "getting"without using music as a metaphor for doctoring.

I hope you are right. I wish I saw it more often.
There is no metaphor mentioned in the original post. Let's not be too quick to judge...
Here I caution. I only judge on the application (inevitably).😉

This will be music to their ears. We can only hope that @Goro and @gonnif will chime in!
I'd better get my licks in before the Prince of Punnery arrives. He does have this habit of tooting his own horn and likes to trumpet his successes, after all. \

No doubt he'll horn in on my own thoughts here and beat the drum for himself. Then there will be a chorus of complaints! I hate to sound like a broken record about this, but I'm afraid that there will be sour notes all around. This won't be my last words about this either, because it ain't over until the fat lady sings!

I suppose you should add this information. It is still your activity and experience that should be mentioned in essay. However I don't know for sure, have not to much experience with essays. Usually order them in Web, a lot of services are available. Hmm, maybe it would be useful for you as well. Check this Bestessay.com ,good one. Or Google smth similar. Good luck with your essay!
