I have read in previous threads that to land an excellent radiology job on the West Coast (San Diego, for example), that many groups really want residents to come out of a "top program."

Without debating that issue, can someone tell me what the "top radiology" programs are? I've heard MGH, Duke, etc....how about some on the west coast (or western states)?

I would really appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

You better get >240 on Step 1 then. But honestly worry about doing good first in school. You havent started yet. You'll get a good spot if you're committed i'm sure

Thanks for your reply. You're absolutely right. I know I have a long road ahead of me. I'm hoping everything works out the way I'd like, but I will make adjustments if necessary. For now, I just want to have a goal. Scoring a 240+ is definitely part of that goal.

So what programs on the west coast are highly regarded? UCSD? UCLA? Loma Linda? Any comments?

UCSF > Stanford > UCSD, UCLA >> all others. Don't waste time studying these lists, you would be better served studying for step 1.

agree...study HARD if you want to get into any top program. IMHO, ucsf>>stanford>ucla, ucsd in cali. others around the country include mgh, penn, mir >brigham, duke, jhu, etc. (certainly not an exhaustive list).

that being said, there's an element of regionalism when applying for jobs. if you want to stay in the west coast and you graduated from a ho-hum residecny program, BUT your PD is best friends with some guy in the top practice in the bay area, then you may have a greater chance from some guy from mgh or penn who has little connections on the west coast (except, of course, to the academic programs...but who wants to do academics?). in other words, programs in a particular region have connections that others don't always have from another region. so take these "top programs" with a grain of salt. although you'll have "bad ass" written on your diploma, it might not be enough to get you where you want all the time.
