Dumb question but just wondering what do you guys usually wear for clinic attire? I'm not a khaki type of person but is black suit pants a little too formal?

no, that's perfectly fine. I don't think i've ever worn khakis to clinic or rotations for that matter but other students have. As long as you dont have those cargo khakis with a billion pockets, you'll be fine

Guys at my school typically wear nice slacks with a shirt and tie (and the white coat of course).

I get pretty hot wearing all this at this time of year. Can't wait for colder temps personally.

You could always get lighter shirts and lighter khakis for the summer season. Some attendings wear short sleeved shirts but I personally think they look ridiculous.

Always remember: a tie.

I can't tell you how many of my classmates caught grief for showing up without a tie.

One ortho attending went so far as sending the student home and telling him: "This is ortho clinic. Not family medcine. Come back with a d@mn tie or don't come back at all."

Yes I've seen that and I concur. With a tie they are just goofy looking.

Tie is no problem. What's more warm and uncomfy is buttoning that top button. Not having to do that is about the only thing I envy about the ladies.

I don't personally own any short sleeved dress shirts, but if you can keep the coat on all the time (which kinda defeats the purpose, I guess), who would know, other than someone noting your absence of cuffs?

I personally just roll up the sleeves, flatten them out, and then put on the coat. Same effect, but I can put them down for meetings/etc.

I would leave a extra tie and white coat in the locker or bag just in case

You might try buying your shirts with a size larger collar. You'll have the top button buttoned but still get a little breathing room.

Yeah I've started doing that. It doesn't look quite as sharp but it's worth it.

You can also get button extendors if you've already invested in tight necked shirts. But you're right, it looks kind of weird with a large neck.

You can leave the top button undone and still wear a tie. I do it all the time. Just pull your collar out a little to cover the unbuttoned part so it isn't obvious (not sure if I'm explaining that right, but it is possible). You may have to make sure it doesn't slip around during the day, but it beats being semi-strangled for hours! Works for me...
