Anyone considering going to UDMSD, consider this your warning ... It is NOT a good school. You will not enjoy your educational experience.

I have read many comments in the forums from people suggesting that UDMSD is a very strong clinical program. I heard that myself as I headed into dental school there. Having been through the program i am still left wondering how that can possibly be. IMO, it is no stronger a clinical program than any other school. I ask you, what makes it a strong clinical program? Please offer some examples. UDMSD's requirements are the same or LESS than most other schools. Detroit has terrible medicaid coverage ... that means it is difficult to fulfill your requirements. So what makes it a better program. The teaching is terrible at the school. Students end up having to learn everything on their own because the teaching is so bad!

The educational experience is terrible. You may not enjoy dental school elsewhere but you are sure to hate your experience at UDMSD. I am not alone in this opinion. Most students, if they are honest with you, will admit that they share the same feelings.

Your experience on a tour or interview at the school should not be indicative of the educational experience. Again, consider this your warning.

The facilities ARE better than the old clinic. But it is still the same crappy school. Nothing has really changed. The new clinic is less crowded, has higher ceilings, and all around feels more open. But it's the same crappy school, same crappy policies, same crappy equipment. Don't be fooled.

They could care less about the students. You are a tool in their hands and you will do whatever they want. They are the epitome of rigidity! So many of the policies have little to no regard for the students.

UDMSD is mind numbing, boring, irritating, etc. I don't see why anyone would want to go to the school. I also don't see why they have such a good reputation for being a good clinical school. Sure you graduate with many clinical skills. But that is the same for any dental school. There is a standard that a student must meet in order to graduate from ANY dental school. UDMSD is no different. I can tell you that you will graduate with no more skills from UDMSD than from any other school!! Again, don't be fooled!

The school is disorganized, unprofessional, and simply a terrible program from a student's perspective. I strongly advise you to chose elsewhere!

and where do you get this info?

the interviewer specifically told me that they're a clinical school not a research school. their focus is on clinical.

and if their teaching is so bad, then how did they get a 100% board pass rate? lol

i don't know where you're getting this but unless you can prove it, it makes your motives look pretty suspicious

If you feel UDM is so horrible, what have YOU done to change YOUR program?

I am getting the feeling you are a disgruntled student. A good friend of mine graduated from UDM last year, and she REALLY loved her experience!

I'm going to detroit next year. class of 2014 will study hard and party even harder to maintain that 100% board passing rate.

I got a pretty good vibe from everyone when I was interviewing there. All of the students that I interacted with seemed to love it there.

Ouch. Looks to me UDM h8tr just got burned. There are always happy and disgruntled students at every dental school. It's what you make out of it that counts. Comments like these are common on sdn as dental schools are stressful overall. Take it with a grain of salt. I too had a positive experience when i visited the school and the staffs seemed to genuinely care about you.

keep in mind that posters like this could be an attempt, by an applicant trying to get in, to ward off other accepted applicants.

lol or it could be just a very disgruntled student venting off some steam

I agree!!!

Shamu should make moves and take care of the UDM H8tr!!!!

Don't forget, some students who go into these heavily demanding programs (like dentistry / medicine / etc etc) go into depression periods cause of the large amount of workload they go through. So they blame the school for "making" thier lifes a living hell.

Anyways, no one should go to dental school for "fun".... no one expects it to be "easy" and "omg everyone is so nice, everyone loves me, and I love them back".... You should be in the mind set that those 4 years are going to test your upper limits of suicide. I am not picking USA schools cause of how comfortable I was at the interview / tour, but rather, which one gives me best tuition rates and most importantly, which one grants me an acceptance. 4 years will come and go fast, I don't care how miserable they make me

Why is it one of these post comes out for every school. If you rounded up all these "rant" post and believed them, you would be led to believe that all the schools are terrible... 👎 LOL

I firmly believe D School will be a series of powerful kicks to the groin; however, I have also found when the chips are down, you make the best bonds with those who are in the trenches with you.

OK OK everyone simmer down. before you get the villagers together with torches and pitchforks, understand that everyone may have different experiences at dental school, some better and some worse.

to the OP, hang in there. when times get tough and you're ultra-frustrated at nonsense going on and hoops your jumping through, realize that dental school is just that......school. the REAL learning comes after you graduate. finish your basic training and go live the dream. 😎

I graduated from the school! I experienced it. There are few exceptions of students who did not feel like the school was one of the worst in the country. Board passing rate is no gauge of how good a school is. I was a part of one of the classes that had a 100% pass rate. The year before and the year after they had 10% fail rates ... explain that! The reason we do well is because we have to study like crazy because we feel unprepared!

You are correct that they school is not a research institution. That only means that research is not an integral part and research opportunities are not promoted throughout the school. That means the school IS as clinical school ... That does not make it a GOOD clinical institution! The same techniques taught at UDM are the same that are taught elsewhere. The requirements at UDM are the same or less than any other school. I would expect a strong clinical program to graduate students with more experience and more clinical skills than elsewhere. I can tell you for a fact that that is not the case.

Don't get me wrong, you will graduate from UDM and be competent enough to practice. But that is the case with ANY school. All i am saying is you won't enjoy the school. My experience and the experience of those who i graduated with are that the school was not as good as compared to the experience of those we knew at other schools.

On another note, UDM dental an alumni donation rate of half the national average!! That should tell you something! Graduates don't donate to the school for a reason!

Now, i know dental school is not supposed to be easy. I get that. I expected a mind-stimulating CHALLENGE. What i experienced was a mind-numbing, uninspiring, unmotivating, low qualtiy, and disorganized mess! I was shocked that a school that essentially teaches one single subject, did such a poor job. I didn't expect the school to spoon feed us. But i did expect a lot higher degree of quality than what we got. From what i experienced on interviews and discussions with students at other schools, there are good schools out there. Most in my graduating class would agree that UDM is NOT one of them!

Bottom line, If i had it to do over again, i would NEVER go to UDMSD and neither would a whole bunch of students from my graduating class!

UDM H8tr,

I underestand your frustration, but I take it you've graduated already so why are you bothering with this topic? I mean if your ultimate goal is to help your fellow pre-dent student, don't bash the school some of us apply to but instead, you can spend your time offering personal statment reviews, interview question mockupsand things of that nature. Don't waste your time writting this thread cause it doesn't do any good for any of us pre-dents

I totally agree with you dentalWorks 👍👍

i disagree. a lot of predents want to hear about real experiences. if he really feels that way about the school, i think it provides a service to people applying there, so that they ask better questions or consider things they may not have.

predents are smart enough to keep in mind this is 1 experience out of many, but if its honest, then it has value. its easy to come by volumes of praise about school x or y, but its much more difficult to come across negative experiences (except USC haha)

You just described every dental school in the history of the world.

Get over it.

I totally agree with the bolded statment. However, our UDM H8tr isn't exactly giving us any feedback about the school. He is litterally bashing the school into oblivion, not much feedback when you hear statments like "...But it is still the same crappy school... But it's the same crappy school, same crappy policies, same crappy equipment..." huh? Hows is this supposed to be any feedback to me? What is considered a "crappy policy" "crappy school" ?

"The school is disorganized, unprofessional, and simply a terrible program from a student's perspective"
Huh? How is it disorganized? does it take students longer than 4 years to finish? wtf is this supposed to me to me? unprofessional? how so? did the professors slap the **** out of you everytime you got something wrong? Terrible program? whoa please don't elaborate more on that

"I strongly advise you to chose elsewhere!"
Well geee, thanks

I will take that opportunity at some point in the near future and put some more constructive thoughts together. Thanks for the comment!

Are you making light of the recent whale attack at Sea World? Whale violence is no laughing matter. I would never wish a whale attack on anyone.

I think you failed to read the rest of his post. Those are indeed the questions you SHOULD be asking to get better insight. Clearly, the OP is bitter, but like Oracle DMD mentioned, he is keeping it real. And for me, a pre-dental, I respect that 100%, and want more of it!

Yes, there is no perfect dental school where every classroom smells like peaches and pears and every professor will bend over backwards for you to get an A, but for a graduate of UDM takes the time to write a post like he did, that is surely going to set off some alarms for me...he could have easily kept a grudge and did his own thing, but he came to give pre-dents a WARNING...and thanks OP, I will heed your warning, just like everyone else should, and use that as a reason to do more research and ASK MORE QUESTIONS, not just take your word for it an run for hills!

I think you failed to read the rest of his post.

No, I just refused to read his other post cause clearly, something is off with this person.

Oh yeh I forgot to mention, My sister got her DDS from detroit mercy, and I have NEVER heard her mention or say anything this negative about the school... the most negative thing she says is that the education was pretty tough, alot of studying, alot of effort.

could you post a scan of your udmsod student ID (or something proving you're/were a student) so that we know you're not some random predent trying to get in? Feel free to block out your personal info from it...

thanks
