Was it hard for current dentists to find their first job?

I'm just curious. I have heard that once dentists get out, they usually work for another dentist, to build a client base. After dental school, I plan to practice in either the LA or SF area in California. Can anyone who has gone through this before tell me what it is like? Thanks.
