Washington

I just got back from my interview. The teaching hospital and school are amazing. The hospital is huge!! The interview went great and the interviewers were very friendly. The interview just seemed like a long, guided discussion. At one point we were talking about the Navajo Indians, the culture and the reservations. It was great, I do not even know how many questions I was asked; I actually do not remember the questions because the interview was so conversational. The essay was also not all that bad the greyhound in the room will help to make you feel much more comfortable. Washington is my number one choice right now. Keeping my fingers crossed for good news in the next 2 weeks!! :xf:

Hey DVMDream, sorry I missed you! I had issues at the airport and did not get to the gate until the last minute. Sounds like your interview went well...mine did too! The only thing that bugged me was that vet students were in there talking to each other while I was trying to do my essay (which seems like a pretty common complaint), and another interviewee that was sitting next to me was even trying to talk to me as I was writing! Wtf?! But anyway, it went well overall. I felt very at ease at the interview.

I hope you hear good news too! :luck:

That is ok. I am glad the issues were solved and you were able to make the flight. There were also some students and interviewees talking while I was writing my essay too, it did not really bother me (I am used to there always being lots of noise in the house I grew up with 3 sisters who were always lauging and talking and I have some of the loudest roomies in the world currently so I am quite used to distractions). Hoping we both get some good news very soon!! :xf: :luck:

I've been accepted to WSU through the WICHE program and haven't seen it yet, but I'm flying out next week to Spokane and driving down to Pullman to check it out and I'm very excited!!! I've been corresponding with Ms. Hodson and she has been hugely helpful in coming up with an itinerary for me next Friday to see the hospital, classes and the campus.

I was curious if there was anything that people did (museum, performance, farmer's market, store, etc) while in town that they really enjoyed? What hotel do you recommend? I wanted to stay at the Holiday Inn Express but they are full. And lastly, I'm also visiting CSU the week after and was wondering if anyone else has been to both campuses and what they thought? I'm pretty sure my ultimate decision will come down between both of these schools.

THANKS!!!!!

Congrats on your acceptances!! I really did not do much while I was there since I was so nervous about the interview. I did go on an unexpected exploration of Pullman because I got turned around and lost a few times, but I actually found a bit of a simpler way to get from my hotel to the school and I found a grocery store so it worked out in the end. I stayed at the Hilltop Inn it is about a 5 minute or so drive from the school. It was nice and they had a free breakfast in the morning. They gave me the room overlooking the school bus garage (YAY!!😀) oh and the cemetery (felt right at home since the university I go to is surrounded by 3 different cemeteries). Anyway, when you get there go the visitor center first and purchase a parking pass so you do not get ticketed it is really cheap. Pay really, really close attention to the itty, bitty street posts so you can figure out what road is coming up (sucks if you have bad eyes like I do). I am used to the street name being on the actual traffic light and being able to see it about 30 feet away so it took my a while to get used to the street signs being so small. I really liked the town. It is small but nice and everyone was really friendly. The teaching hospital is huge and AMAZING!! Have fun! Maybe we will be classmates next year! :xf:

First of all, CONGRATS!!!

I didn't too much in Washington during my stay either... Explored Pullman, checked out Moscow, Idaho... Not sure there really is much to do (but I'm living in Wyoming right now, so I really wasn't phased. I guess I'm used to a general lack of everything.)
I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express, and when I first tried to make reservations, they were full. By the time I actually got around to making my travel plans (i.e., had fully accepted that my credit card bill was going to be HUGE next month...), they had rooms open.
I second DVMDream's advice about getting a parking permit right away. Make sure you get the campus map with parking lots on it when you get the pass! I wasn't able to park in the lot near Bustad the first couple of times I tried--the map was very helpful (I might not have know about the other lots my permit was good at within walking distance of Bustad without it.) I think the vet med lot fills REALLY early on week days too.

I would be very interested to hear how you compare WSU and CSU after your trips... Have fun!

That made me chuckle. "Really early" is when you'll be going to classes next year  It's usually full by 8:10am.

Theory is the noisy waiting room is to see how you do in a less than ideal environment. Or that they're just keeping you busy so you don't have a heart attack while waiting. 😉 Don't mind it too much, most everyone gets a noisy waiting room. I had many other applicants, a dog, and some vet students too.

One year from now you'll be anxious to peep in on the newbies waiting too. 🙂

As far as visiting, there isn't really a whole lot to sight see, especially in the winter months. The farmer's market in Moscow is excellent, but that is May-October.

Moscow/Pullman is a college town in the middle of eastern WA, so you have to make your own entertainment. I've enjoyed the company of my friends more than anything else out here. There are some vet student hang-outs, but I really don't think they'd be interesting to most people.

As far as museums/performances/stores - There's an Appaloosa museum thing in Moscow, I'm the wrong person to ask about performances, and unless you come from the year 1927, our stores probably aren't that cool either. The mall, which is in Moscow, has a Rite-Aid in it. 🙄 But I do think downtown Moscow is pretty cute, especially at night. They have some good coffee places, a book store, a bakery, places to eat, and a Co-Op.

As someone who has lived in both small towns and big cities, I'm quite pleased with where I'm living. It's no mecca for arts, culture and entertainment, but you could do a whole lot worse.

...I meant early compared to "visiting hours"... 🙂

Thanks everyone!!!! The tip about parking is fantastic as I have found most universities are a pain to park at unless you have some sense as to where you are going. I definitely understand that Pullman is small and that I'm not driving into a giant metropolitan city (lucky for me I love the cities, but I also love small towns), but I always like to double check about suggestions since it's usually the locals or past visitors that will know of some random fun place/event/thing going on. I will keep you all posted on what I think and how the trip goes. I'm soooooooooooooo excited to see it, just a few more days to go. Thanks again!!!

Did anyone who interviewed, or current students ask how they send out acceptances? I looked on the thread from last year and they were mostly snail mail but the IS and WICHE people got emails this year right?

Hmm... I seem to recall something about emails (and possibly text messages if you clicked some box on the supplemental?), but I just dug through my stuff and found this on the interview letter:

"The Admissions Committee will begin deliberating as soon as all the Out-of-Area, nonsponsored interviews are completed. Official notification letters will be mailed within one week after the deliberations are completed."

So hopefully letters are making there way to the post-office! I think the IS people found out within a week of interviews by email.

But to answer your original question, "I'm not sure what to expect either!"

Yeah I think I remember seeing that on my interview letter too. Crap, get with the times people, emails THEN snail mail!!!! I wonder if they will take the whole week to deliberate...?

Barbara told me that they will be deliberating the oos people this week and we will find out next week what our status is. I am not sure if that means e-mail or snail mail, but she did verify my address. I am really hoping for e-mail especially since there was a big fiasco with my interview letter.

Yeah, I'm hoping for email too because my letter got lost in the mail last year...which wasn't so bad cause it was a rejection, but still!

WSU changed up how they do notifications this year. If you're accepted, you'll get an email and snail mail. I'm IS but currently going to school in Montana, and my email came on a Friday and the snail mail didn't come until the next Wednesday. I didn't get a text message, though I remember that box on the application. Waitlists and rejections are snail mail only, no email. My email came eight days after my interview, so I bet you OOSers will be hearing soon! Good luck everyone! :luck::luck::luck:

They also called WICHE students and let them know that they were interested. Not sure if they are doing that with OOS... But makes me jumpy every time my phone goes off

So WSU called you and you didn't TEXT me!?!?! When was this? Today?

No I didn't get a call. Several of my friends that are WICHE got calls from WSU when they got WICHE certified. GSDgirl shouldn't be so paranoid!

Sorry everybody! I didn't mean to freak out. (From now on, I will send my "freak-outs" to Wycolo on FB.) 🙄

Just FYI, I received an "Early Interest" letter in December and once WICHE funding was confirmed I received both an e-mail and a phone call offering me admission on Jan 5th. It was my first acceptance and best way to start the year. Best of luck to everyone who is still axiously waiting. I'm actually on my way to visit the campus today and tomorrow. So very exciting 😀

Chill,
Do you know where you'll be going yet? I saw that you got accepted to Colorado too, Congrats! I also am from a WICHE state (UT) but unfortunately I am an alternate for funding (my state will only fund 3 people this year) but I got that early interest letter too. Hopefully they will call and email the rest of us as well!

I am starting to wonder if all WICHE people got the early interest letter because I also got one. But, I did not get WICHE funding..oh well, AZ has no $$ anyway (state is sending IOU's to people who get $ back from their taxes.) I am just hoping for good news from WSU next week. :xf: Good luck everyone! :luck:

I agree, though I applied last year and was WICHE certified and didn't get a letter so maybe its a new thing or there are just more WICHE students on SDN this year. When was your interview? Mine was Tuesday the 9th and I met 2 girls from AZ who didn't get funding either...

Mine was also on Tuesday the 9th. It was in the afternoon and I went on the tour at noon.

I hope you get funding and the magical WSU acceptance e-mail!!! I think only 4 from Nevada received funding this year, definitely tough times. I'll probably be making my final decision during the first and second week of March. I just arrived in Pullman, will be visiting CSU next week and am waiting to hear from Davis (although I'm quickly losing hope of an interview invite) and am on the alternate list for Ohio. I'm definitely at the point where I want to be settled on a place... all this waiting, rejections, acceptances, update e-mails and what not are giving me ulcers, haha. I guess it would also help to be more decisive, but alas that is not me. I've always been the one to check out all opportunities and see them first hand. Anywho, now I'm rambling. Keep us posted once you hear something.

OOS applicants: CHECK YOUR EMAIL!!!!

I got an acceptance offer... whoooopiiiieeeee!!! Michigan or Washington is the decision thus far... Illinois interview on the 22nd.... This is going to be the best hard decision I've ever had to make 🙂

Received an acceptance email!! Oh man this is awesome since my brother got accepted IS!!😀

That's right!! Congrats OOSers! C/O 2014!!!

Nothing here. 🙁 I hope it is not a rejection. Maybe they only sent a couple out today. Ok. Maybe I am just trying to keep my hopes up. I guess I will just have to wait and see. Congrats to those who have been accepted!! :claps:

Sorry to hear that, DVMDream. Hopefully you still have good news heading your way :luck:

And Congrats to everyone who got their acceptance today! I'm so excited to meet my future classmates!!

Just FYI, I emailed Barbara Hodson today because I couldn't take it and I absolutely HAD to find out if all the acceptances had gone out on friday and she said she still hasn't received the final list from the admissions committee yet. So there's still hope!

Likewise! I hope we both get good news! I still haven't heard anything yet though

I know its only Tuesday but I want to know one way or another. Just glad that they haven't contacted everyone that got in. I'd take being waitlisted at this point.

Ok it is now Wednesday and still nothing...I wonder what the heck they are waiting for? Did anyone get a rejection in the mail yet? I'm only an hour ahead of Washington so my mail has yet to show up today. Anyone?

Nope nothing yet (I am also only an hour ahead). I am just waiting patiently (not). I just want to know! Tell me if I have been accepted, waitlisted, or rejected at this point I really just want to know. I am hoping for good news soon, but the more time that passes the less and less confident I feel. 🙁

I agree! I feel like I would have hear by now if it were good news.

P.S. You're only an hour ahead? Where are you if you don't mind me asking. I'm in Utah and there seems to be a few people on this forum from here too.

I am in AZ. Mail actually just came and still nothing. 🙁 I hate the waiting game.

Well that's good I guess, no news is good news and all that. I would email Barbara again but I think that's probably pushing it

Lol...but we are desperate! I was thinking of e-mailing her tomorrow if I do not receive anything today because the suspense is killing me and I just want to know if they really did send out all of the acceptances last week.

DO IT!

As Far as Monday goes, she said that not all the acceptances were sent out. If she didn't have the full list from the committee yet hopefully they are just taking longer than a few days to decide? I dunno, I'm trying to stay optimistic but it's probably wishful thinking

I really, really like your thinking even if it is only wishful...it makes me feel better and I am really hoping and thinking the same. :xf:

Yeah it's just SO frustrating.

ESPECIALLY (and I'm assuming you got the "early interest" letter too, being from AZ) when you realize that if you do get rejected they are really saying "We DID want you to come to our school but only if your state gives us money for it". I have been screwed by the WICHE program in UT for 3 years now and I feel that I have lost absolutely all confidence in that system.

Yeah I got the early interest letter too. But I really do not think they would care if your state paid for it or you paid for it. If they really only wanted you to come because your state was paying for it then they would not have waisted their time interviewing you (since they do not interview WICHE) and just accepted you if you received funding and rejected you if you did not receive funding. At least that is my opinion but I would think that they would only interview people they are really interested in having come to the school.
