For someone living in the dorm of WashU
1. Are students allowed to keep a refrigerator in the room?
2. Are students allowed to keep a microwave in room?
3. Do I have to bring my own pillow & sheet?
4. Desk size: Is there enough space for me to put a desktop computer AND still have enough space to study with my big text book & binder?
5. Do they provide internet access?
6. What kind of room is better, single or double or suite?
7. Do I have to bring my own pillow & sheets?
8. If the mattress is too soft for my back, can I buy my own mattress?
9. I heard there is housekeeping service? What do they do for you? Do I need to bring my own sheets or they are provided by the housekeeping?
10. Do they have air conditioning in the dorm? Do the rooms have their own individual AC controls?
Thank you 🙂

i live in olin, so here goes:
1. yes (there is allegedly a max size, but i don't think anyone would say anything about any size. you just wouldn't want it to be too big cuz the rooms aren't THAT big)
2. yes (i have one, though there are kitchens with them on odd numbered floors).
3. you need your own pillow and sheet (i don't know why you wouldn't want your own anyway)
4. desk size depends on the room size. i have a large single, which essentially has 2 desks, so that you could do work on one side and have your computer on the other side. regular singles have enough desk space for both, but only one place you can put a chair (if that makes any sense).
5. internet is free (its ethernet actually, really nice)
6. being in a suite isn't an option for first years i don't think. i personally am happy with my large single, but its not THAT much bigger than a regular single. the pluses to a large single are a bigger closet (essentially 2 closets) and more desk space.
7. same question as #3. same answer
8. i think the mattresses are pretty good. but if you don't like it, i am really not sure if they'll take the bed back and let you just get another. i'd think they would and would just store the bed, but that might be something you want to check on (though i can't imagine having too much of a problem with the mattresses).
9. housekeeping basically takes out your garbage and does some vacuuming if you have carpet. i brought a big carpet (too big for the room) and then cut it to fit the room. that is something i'd definitely recommend, it makes the room soooooo much better, like having wall to wall carpet. and they do vacuum that for me. if you have a smaller space rug they do vacuum it but its less consistent. and no they don't really give you anything like sheets.
10. they have ac and heat in the dorm, and each room has its own controls. the only negative about it is that they have to turn the building ac on before you can use it in your individual room, and they usually wait till mid april (so there can be some hot days before that). overall though no complaints there.

aside from your questions, the one thing i'd definitely recommend is some form of carpet. maybe its just me, but it seems a whole lot more like home with a carpet. hope this helps.

hey eerie... do you know if the dimensions they sent us (10 by 11 for the regular single) include the built in desk and closet? I have a couch that has been with me forEVER and I'm trying to figure out if it would fit in my room (1030, if that makes a difference).

i'm not completely sure about that. there are rooms here that i've seen that have had futons in addition to the bed. i am sure that if you call the dorm here (i'm sure the number is online somewhere) they'd be able to give you more info. i'd tend to guess that it does include at least the desk, but again i'm really not sure.

Oh well, thanks anyway! 🙂

Housekeeping also tends to remove any loose cash that's cluttering up your room. I never lived there but that's what Wash U medstudents told me.

Can't speak for everyone, but I've lived here for a year and haven't had a problem with this.

yeah that's just wrong. i've never heard anyone who had a problem with this. first of all, it would be fairly obvious if things went missing from your room that someone with facilities took it, and after awhile (if it happened more than once) this would get back to management and something would be done. beyond that, its the same person who cleans your room every week, so you get to know them. they are all really nice (or at least most of them are outwardly nice).

What size is the bed? Twin or Full?

Yeah I didn't have any issues with taht in the year I was there. I just didn't want housekeeping to come into my room because it was embarrasingly dirty

its a twin "long" to answer the question above btw

hey... does anyone know how move-in works at Olin? Is there free parking anywhere for loading/unloading? Are there carts available?

its easy. you'll park in the loading dock area near the lobby. there are some dolley's (sp?) to use to get stuff up there. but really the distance from the loading dock to the elevator isn't very far so its not a problem. you can just ask the front desk security to get the dolley.

sounds good! I'm thinking about shipping some stuff as well; does anyone know if I can have things arrive before I do? I assume Olin has a mail room where packages get dropped off?
