Both of these schools give out free pens at the interviews. WashU's has that nice little rubber grippy thing on it, but Duke's seems to have more ink in it and the ink is also a cooler color.

Which pen is better, and to what extent is the quality of the pen correlated to the quality of the medical education at a given institution? Should those applicants fortunate enough to be accepted at both schools (I'm not saying that I will be one of them) base their decision of which school to attend solely on which pen is nicer or are there other important factors to consider???

You didn't know that free-pen quality constitutes the #1 factor in U.S. News rankings??

LOL. I noticed that too. I would have to go with the Duke Pen. I think it was a superior writing utensil. The pen at HMS was a simple ball point click pen, nice, but Duke really went the distance on this. It had a nice ink well and was felt tip. If they put this much care into their pen selection, imagine how the rest of the school must be ... 😍

:hardy:

While I enjoyed the Duke pen, it began leaking about 3 months into its use. I had blue ink all over my hands. Such shoddy quality!

Duke's pen is far superior to WashU's. However, WashU gave out a portable alarm clock, which for me in fact had several broken pixels (and someone else my day said it didnt work!).

Ironically, I dont remember Penn giving me a Pen.

Oh, I think that is because they seperated out all the ladies and minorities to get sponge-baths from the WashU adcoms.

The ORM males got to eat stale bagels. W00t.

The Pritzker pen is the bestest!!

My Pritzker pen stopped working after the second day of use. But I could still blow bubbles with it. haha.

🙂 the washU pen flows better for my liking. the duke pen is nicer, grips better, but lets out way more ink than is necessary for everyday stuff.

i guess it depends on what i'm using it for. but i'm glad other people have noticed these things🙂

what would be interesting is if they handed out these pens with 'golden tickets' like in charlie and the chocolate factory. except you'd have to do something elaborate to figure out if you've got it. a little out there, but i mean, i would love to have some kind of feeling that 70-some-odd dollars to each school filtered back to me somehow.

wait the golden ticket thing a bad idea; there are some desperate pre-meds out there...

Unless you got a defective pen from Duke, I think you have your pens mixed up. Mine controls the ink flow way better than the one from WashU. I suggest that you contact the admissions office and ask for a new pen if you received one doesn't work properly. I think that handing out defective merchandise reflects poorly on the image of the school, and they had better set things straight. The same goes for those ridiculous alarm clocks from Wash U.
