WashU Waitlist 2006

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just called and found the admissions office closed because Wash U graduates today, so probably no waitlist movement today...

BUMP!!!

I hope next week will be a better week for most of us. I shaved my moustache in the hope of improving my luck 😀

Dr. Dodson, please call me!!!!

Yeesh, this thread should be busier than a random tumbleweed rolling by.

My Theory:

They went to the waitlist for the "shoeins"

I'm actually starting to believe the first half of your theory. It almost seems like the Admissions committee sent out acceptances to all of their dreamy, waitlisted candidates on May 15th, and gave them two weeks to decide. In addition during this time, there would have been some attrition to some of Wash U's accepted students, who got off the waitlists at other schools. Just looking at two out of the three posters who were accepted here at SDN, ND2005 has incredible stats, and GoodEats has to decide between Baylor, Wash U, and Yale. That really gives me the impression that the May 15th acceptances did not go to the regular schmoes on the waitlist. I would guess that a bunch of waitlist movement will occur next week after Memorial Day (two weeks after May 15th offers, and two weeks after some of the Wash U acceptances were lost to other waitlists). Well that could be true, or the bunch of fortune cookies I've been opening are just lying to me

dang, now both the schools i'm waitlisted at and would give my right eye to attend have started drawing (other people) off the waitlist. abj - i'm hoping you're right and here's hoping next week dr. dodson calls me (and preferably before i sign a lease in boston 🙂

Hey guys, seems the waitlist is moving again. I just got an email acceptance from Dean Dodson (dated 5/24). Good luck to all of you, and hope you get a chance to hop on the bandwagon soon! (FYI, I did not send in any LOIs or update letters during the app. process, for those of you who are curious)

congrats, snappy! now i will check my email EVEN MORE obsessively, if that's even possible 🙂

i just withdrew from the waitlist. good luck guys.

Congrats!!!

but..... i only got an email from Dean Dodson saying that they have received my response to stay on the waitlist 🙁 I am starting to feel that the number of spots is running out......

Hey guys,

I was accepted off the waitlist on the 15th, and I withdrew my acceptance on Tuesday. Good luck to you all!

Where are you going instead, if you don't mind me asking?

I don't mind at all - UMich! Have fun at Vandy! 🙂

Thanks for withdrawing 😀

You guys are going to some unbelievable med schools. 👍

I hope that the deafening silence on this board is an indication that Snappy is the only one who heard anything new in the last little while. First go round of posting, just wanted to say thanks to all of you who have been feeding us information from the admissions secretaries (meager though it may be). Also wanted to apologize for bumping this, because if you're anything like me, all of you are going to check the thread now with your hearts in your throats to see if someone else got the call we've all been aching for.

Ya, I'm so scared when I see this thread bumped. When I see people get accepted, I feel happy for other people but I feel so bad for myself.

Hi,

I was accepted off the waitlist on the 15th as well, and withdrew my acceptance on the 22nd. Wash U is a great med school (it's my dream school... 😍 ), but as an international applicant, the financial constraints governing my application are a bit...too much 🙁 . I'll be staying in Canada instead (either University of British Columbia or University of Alberta - still need to decide).

Good luck to all of you :luck: .

Don't get me wrong, canucks, I'm grateful that you dropped, but are you CRAZY!?! 😱 I would sell one of every organ I have duplicated to get in if I had to! Oh well, best of luck in Canada.

PS Is it just me, or is this waitlist cause for suicide? This time last year there had already been two more rounds of notifications of movement. What's going on?!? Any info?

guys,

can anyone tell me if washu has a minimum cut off mcat score in order to send their secondary? thanks!

square

I don't think they have any sort of MCAT cuttoff, or for that matter, any sort of screening from AMCAS to secondary. In fact, Wash U generally interviews proportionally more people than other schools. However, I will say that they are very cogniscent of their #1 ranking with respect to selectivity and thus (at least I perceive) try to select applicants with high MCAT scores to keep their average insanely high. For instance, I felt like I nailed my interview and even so felt fortunate to get waitlisted, because I only got a 32. Hope that helps.

*Sigh* Don't remind me...declining the offer still hurts, but international applicants aren't eligible for ANY financial aid from the school (Wash U policy unfortunately), AND have to pay for all four years of tuition and living costs upfront (~$260,000 USD). While that amount won't buy a house anymore (Vancouver houses are getting to be $1 million+ CAD), that would pay for med school in Canada three times over. Canadian med schools are all good schools too (can't go wrong with any of them actually). Of course, if someone would like to pay for some of that $260,000 for me... 😛

Hmm... then why did you apply to Wash U in the first place (I think international students don't qualify for financial aid anywhere in the US)? It would probably be less painful if you didn't apply. Oh well. You'll be successful anywhere you go. Best of luck!

Actually, there are quite a few schools in the US where international students are eligible for financial aid (Vanderbilt, Dartmouth, and Yale are a few that come to mind). As for why I applied to Wash U, it is a great school and had I not been offered a seat in any of the Canadian schools I applied to (they're tougher than you think to get in, actually), I would definitely have taken up Wash U's offer 😍 . Heck, had it not been my top choices in Canada that I was offered seats to, I probably would've started leaning towards Wash U. Even with the offers from Canadian schools, I had a tough time choosing not to go to Wash U (so it wasn't exactly an automatic exclusion of Wash U from my choices).

Oh I see. I always thought that international students aren't eligible for financial aid, but I guess I was wrong. That's good to know, because I have a friend who is international and wants to apply to US med schools.

Hey guys. I was out of the country for two weeks and during that time I was accepted off the waitlist at University of Washington. After much consideration...particularly at the pricetags, I have decided to withdraw from the WashU waitlist. I haven't sent in a formal withdrawal letter yet, but just thought I'd let you guys know! Best of luck to all who are still waiting! Don't give up hope yet!

BUMP!

Does anyone have any info on movement? Has there been ANY movement since the initial May 15th flurry?

I am pretty sure there has been no movement in the waitlist since May 15th. At least, I haven't heard anything.

I just called the admissions office--the incredibly uninformative young woman there told me that she didn't think there had been any movement since May 15th and that the class was currently full, and she didn't know of any upcoming waitlist movement. She didn't seem too sure of what she was talking about though. Gotta say, WashU's waitlist is the lamest that I'm on, and their people are the toughest to pry info out of. It's freaking mid-June. I'm ready to kill myself over here.

All I can say that may be of some help is that I have heard Harvard goes to their waitlist towards the end of June. I imagine that Harvard is one of the only places left (that has not started to go to their waitlist) that people would leave Wash U for. Hopefully we'll see some movement in the next couple of weeks as people take acceptances elsewhere.

At least it's easy to find housing in St. Louis in case any of us have to move there on August 20th.

Good luck to everyone!

Well, I guess technically, there has been movement, as we did have one person here, SnappyTurtle, receive an acceptance email on 5/24.

This to me seems a bit strange, that this year, WashU was able to nearly fill its class on its first run-through of the waitlist on 5/15, and maybe a couple of others on 5/24. Just with our own straw poll here, we had 3 people withdraw their acceptances off the waitlist (ND2005, OrganLibrarian, canucksfan... Thanks everybody!), 1 for sure going next year (GoodEats), and 1 we don't know what he/she did with her acceptance (SnappyTurtle). Granted, the straw poll here isn't very accurate to actual makeup of the waitlist, but I guess I just want to find some avenue that there is still hope.

I was planning on calling tomorrow, but now I figure that will be an unfruitful long distance call.

If the movement off the waitlist is slow this year, then it's exactly what the administration expected/was apprehensive about. WUSM got a complete makeover this year, with many added perks that were not there to sway the entering classes of yesteryear. But there is hope yet, in years past, many students got in mid/late june, and I was told by the secretary that in the 20 some years she's been there, she doesn't remember a year when they didn't accept someone as late as august. I think as someone mentioned above, some spots in the harvards and the hopkins and the dukes have to vacate for there to be some movement at WashU.

good luck all, i've left the waitlist for the northwest. Couldn't take the waiting anymore, and the deal in seattle was too good to pass up.

LOL. Just our luck. The year we apply becomes the year WashU's large waitlist movement dies out.

I haven't completely abandoned hope yet. As I wrote, the girl I talked to didn't seem to really know what she was talking about. I'm willing to bet that there's going to be more movement. As was mentioned, we know of three people just on SDN who withdrew acceptances, and if there's not really been much movement since then, there have to be a few spaces left. Maybe somebody else should try calling tomorrow and hope they can get someone who knows what's up. Any wheedlers out there?

bump--again.

Am I the only one who dies a little bit each day that this thread is silent? When the hell are they going to move that waitlist?

No, you're not the only one. I'm feeling more and more depressed as each day passed without the phone call. My interviewer told me that the class is currently full, but they have never gone through July and August wthout accepting anyone off the waitlist, so I guess there is a glimmer of hope. Problem is there are probably hundreds of people on the waitlist, so it probably takes a miracle to get in now.

Veddhead, I hope you have other acceptances. I'm headed for Cincinnati if nothing happens, but I really don't know when I should start looking for apartments there. I'm so confused right now. 😕

Yeah, fortunately I have had a few other acceptances. As of right now, it's Rochester for me, but I'm waitlisted at two of my top choices--WashU and Yale. Hope's a lot better at Yale, but I have family at WashU, and would rather be there. Good luck Hassler!

If I was a cat, I would have used 8 and 4/5ths of my nine lives. I'm at the point where I have to be realistic, and really settle down with planning with what I have in hand right now instead of waiting for what would be a miracle. Its a bit like watching the US play Ghana in the World Cup, by the 85th minute, you just knew that there was no way the US would pull it out. Sure there was time left, but they would have to play that game 100 times over just to get one result where the US came back to win.

Good luck everybody! Somebody will get in from SDN, it just a question of who.

veddhead- I just noticed you are from Tempe. My family would always spend spring break in Tempe, staying in the Inn Suites across Baseline from Arizona Mills Mall (rather cheap but untidy hotel). AZ is great in March, especially when it is sometimes a good 60+ degrees warmer than Wisconsin.

Sure it's great in March. That's what everybody says. Come down here now and tell me how wonderful AZ is. I can't WAIT to see Phoenix in my rearview mirror in a few weeks. I feel like my skin's going to melt off. BTW, that hotel is pretty sketchy. That whole area is. But last time I was at that mall to see a movie, I saw Mike Tyson (who lives in the valley) walking around eating an ice cream cone. My wife was with me and didn't believe it was him til I showed her a picture of him with the obscene tats on the side of his head. My brush with fame.

oh man, maybe you should cross WashU off your list. Right now, in St. Louis, I wish my skin WOULD just go ahead and melt off, but I know I am hoping in vain because it's so damned humid that my skin is just sticking to me. You have to shuffle along the sidewalk at just the right pace, too slow and you might as well stop and melt to death, but too fast and you exert yourself too much and you're instantly drenched in sweat, which doesn't cool you off in the least.

Never been to Tempe, but I'm assuming it's at least dry heat?

ahumdinger said:

You assume correctly, but humidity or not, it's been 110 for most of June. Can't touch the damn steering wheel to drive for ten minutes, and you're covered in sweat the instant you venture outside. There are ruts in the road near stop lights because the asphalt gets soft in the summer and cars actually displace the asphalt while they wait. I know everyone talks up the humidity in places like Texas, but I honestly can't stand it here anymore.

Hey there. I've been lurking forever and never got around to registering, but reading the recent posts I thought I'd give you guys some hope. I've been wasting away on the wait-list for what feels like forever as well, but I finally got a call from Dr. Dodson on 6/15. Don't really know if there's a lot of other movement going on, but it's not a complete standstill.

So hang in there everyone, I know it sucks, but it's still possible. Good luck to you all!

I don't know if this is good or bad news, but I thought I'd share, since I've been reading this thread for a while. I was accepted off the waitlist on 6/26 (Monday).

It is my first/only acceptance, I'm going, and I'm stoked. Good luck to all of you.

LOL. Probably bad news for me, since you're going for sure. 😛 However, congratulations!!! 👍

LauraPaz and theotheredmund, are you two "thrivers"?

Hassler said:

I was. Actually I used that in my latest LOI, and I didn't even realize it until I had it in the envelope. Said something about how I loved the school and that I thought I would thrive there. Yeah, I know, cheap shot, but hey, seems like it worked out 😛

have any non-thrivers been taken? this non-thriver (runt? weakling?) wants to know 🙂
