here it is guys, the official 2006 WashU Waitlist Thread. Come all neurotic applicants to freak out and discuss conspiracy theories. Oh, and to update each other on waitlist movement.

Good luck everyone!

When did you guys get ur waitlist letter, when was it postmarked and where do you live? Heheh..i sound neurotic.. I live in Cali...maybe I'll get mine today.. :scared:

I'm game. I think I've stopped being bitter now...
🙂

BTW. St. Louis resident here. Got the letter in the mail on Tuesday. It was postmarked 3/17.

I live in the LA area and got my waitlist letter yesterday (3/22). It was postmarked on 3/20. Does anyone know if there is just one type of letter/waitlist. My letter says it is an unranked waitlist.

I live in St. Louis, 5 blocks from the school. My letter was dated 3/17, I didn't check the postmark on the envelope, but the letter arrived on tuesday, 3/21.

I really really hope they don't waitlist everyone. That would really ruin the excitement of having gotten waitlisted.

so what's the distribution of the two "types" of letters? I got the "thriver" letter, but from last year's thread, it seems to be pretty random.

I think they reject a few people post interview, but they do have a very large waitlist from what I understand. Even still, I think your chances (ahumdinger's) are probably still pretty good.

my letter does not tell me that the list is unranked, but it does mention that they expect to give out 50 more acceptances before the start of school in August.

From what I gather in years past, the 50 acceptances is an underestimate. Traditionally WashU has to give out ~300 acceptance overall, to fill the class of 120.

I think that they actually initially over fill the class. Then after the fallout, approximately 50 waitlists are pulled.

i see. that makes sense. but not happy sense. 🙁

I am so scared of my mailbox.

All of you guys have insane MCAT scores and GPAs. Makes me feel hopeless.. 🙁

I got my letter on the 21st. It was not the "good" version, so I am not too optimistic. I even went to Wash U undergrad.... Oh well.

Which one isn't the good version?

Waitlist...blah...

Though I did get the "thrive" comments...whatever it means.

haha, surely your BCPM is better than a 2.95!

cheer up, at this point, we're all qualified for admission, so it could be anybody!! Good luck! :luck: :luck: :luck:

Just got it, too, postmarked 3/20. The first couple sentences were such a tease, too, when it says "Your application for admission to our 2006 First Year Class has been carefully evaluated by the Committee on Admissions, which have determined that you are fully qualified for admission." But then you get the "However,..."

Anyways, good luck to everybody.

Oh yeah, and is there any movement off of the waitlist before May 15th?

I read last year's thread, and it seems like there was movement starting just before may 15.

Waitlisted in California 🙁 That's the best i expected since my interview was early november. What is the difference between letters? Apparently i would thrive there...

Just got the letter yesterday. But I'm curious about this whole "good" letter or not. Can someone post which is which. I don't have mine in front of me but it said somethink like the one above. "You're fully qualified for admission but we have too many outstanding candidates..."

Does anyone for sure if everyone is waitlisted post interview?

"Thriver" here, waitlisted 3/23, postmarked 3/20. Boo

I think the major difference is that one letter (the supposedly more positive one) says "fully qualified" and that they feel you would "thrive" at WashU, and also mentions the fact that 50 people can expect to come off the waitlist before the start of school. The other, "less positive" one is shorter, and says "qualified" and tells you that the list is unranked, but leaves out the thriving and the note about 50 people.

waitlisted "thriver." Is there really a waitlist letter version that doesn't include that sentence and the info about accepting 50 people before august?

mail post-marked 3/20, arrived today in Indiana.

As someone who has gotten both - yes.

I was a fully qualified thriver last year. Now I'm only a lowly well qualified applicant. Sigh...

🙄 🙄 🙄 🙄

thriver here too! dated 3/16, postmarked 3/20, got it today in DC. i think i'll stay on the waitlist, though not sure...i'm kind of ambivalent about it cuz i can't remember that many details about the place!

briefly, how traditional is the curriculum? are they really in class a lot? is it a pretty competitive atmosphere there?

anyone else on the fence and can share their reasons why?

thanks all! 🙂

Hey guys, I'm a WashU 4th year...

I just want to remind you (if you haven't heard this already) WashU prefers to accept people for whom it's their first choice. Make sure you send them a letter (not a phone call) that tells them you would give them your firstborn child if only you could be so lucky as to go there. Or something like that. But only if it's true. 🙂

The washU curriculum is as traditional as they come. You pretty much always have class from 9-12 every day, and during the first year, some afternoons are off (while others are for small group and more lectures), but during the second year, I would say you have class from 9-4pm for 75% of the year. Now, some of those afternoon hours are small group, but still, they are scheduled.

The atmosphere is not competitive at all. Which makes sense, 'cause otherwise these cream of the crop students would go crazy trying to beat each other. The first year's pass/fail, and the second year's honors/high pass/pass/fail, but the grades are not curved. I believe on one exam this year, there was a 70% honors rate. The students are extraordinarily cooperative with each other, and they use a web portal for old exams and sharing notes/study material.

My sister just called and said that I have a letter from Wash U....Im guessing its a waitlist letter... 🙁

Yep, waitlist here in california...So, does anyone NOT get waitlisted? I have not seen one person admit to a post interview rejection from Wash U.

My mom just read me my waitlist letter... I got the "thriver" one too.

This morning, I was pretty sure I knew where I was going next year. Now I'm just confused. WashU has been my dream school for ages, but it's a lot farther away from my boyfriend than I would be at my other school... 🙁

I feel like my life just turned into that whole "Love or Medicine" thread that was popular a while back 😛

hahaha yea omg exact same thing for me too!! i got the "thriver" letter today (in wisconsin) but my bf is in nyc and i got into columbia so i thought i'd be going there .. but who knows now, i think i'll stay on the waitlist tho

i got a letter, i got a letter !!!!
waitlisted, but i got two rejections this week, so anything's better than that. now to write a nice, ass-kissing letter 🙂

waitlisted here too! and a thriver - hmm....i really wish they'd be more straightforward about this process. i'd rather hear 'you have been rejected' or 'you are number 146 on our waitlist' than have to decipher their letters with the help of sdn.

haha trust me - i understand the dilemma! i'm already making my boyfriend leave his sunny hometown in southern cali to be with me in nyc, so i can go to columbia. but can i make him leave it for st. louis, where none of his friends will be? i'm thinking no....

so columbia 2010 it is! best of luck to everyone on the waitlist - i hope everything works out and you end up getting in! the school is AMAZING, and if it weren't for the whole boyfriend thing, u could bet i'd be writing some serious letters of intent

Good luck Tiffany! Columbia is awesome - I'm sure you guys will love NYC.

My boyfriend is being amazingly supportive and wants me to write a letter of intent. It might have something to do with the fact that WashU has been my dream since I was in high school (first for undergrad and now for med school) and I talk about it all the time 😛 He doesn't want me to regret later on that I didn't pursue the chance to go there when I had it. I know I'd be happy at Emory, especially since he'd be pretty close by, but WashU is... well, WashU! 😍

But I'm not sure if going to even my dream school would be worth the distance. I guess I've got a lot to think about this weekend. Another excuse to not be working on my thesis... 🙄

i understand! my boyfriend was willing to come with me, but in my case, i loved columbia, too, and nyc is too much for me to turn down. my brother is there, all of my friends are there - so it all worked out and i'm not really giving anything up at all. yeah - i think i'm one of the few very lucky premeds.
congrats both on your admission to emory AND on getting yourself such an awesome boyfriend! i'm sure a letter of intent will go pretty far, and good luck on getting to your dream school!!
i'm not sure exactly where your boyfriend will be, but i've done the distance thing for quite some time - up to 8 months at one point while he was in cali and i was on the east coast, with only 1 visit inbetween! what i can tell you is that, while it's hard, it'll be easier simply because you'll be so busy, and if you decide you can make it work, it's fully possible. will he also be in school? any chance he may be in the midwest at any point in the next few years?

Haha - I started a thread last week ("Best Acceptance Letter Ever") about my boyfriend. Check it out if you want a good laugh 😉

He'll actually be at UAB doing his MD/PhD, so it'll be at least 4 years (when I finish med school) until we'll be in the same place again. I have full faith that we'll make the distance thing work no matter what, but Atlanta-Birmingham is an easy drive, whereas St. Louis would be a lot lot farther away... I know in the end, we'll make the best of whatever happens, but right now I'm just nervous about doing this whole long-distance thing for the first time.

Thanks for the advice! Keep it coming if you have more 🙂

Kazazzle....my gf is in Bama too! (though not in Birmingham) I'm going to have to make a few roadtrips, no matter where I go. If we get the good news from WashU, we'll have to carpool!

why do you think this? chanjurban got the other letter that does not say any of the above. In fact, chanjurban has gotten both letters (he received the thriver-letter when he applied last year)

there may not be any significance to the 2 formats, but there are definitely 2.

🙂 Hee.hee. Didn't think I needed to join the gender-bender thread, but apparently my username is misleading in gender... I've actually carried a child to term for 9 months

Another thriver here.

A lot of schools tell us to just fill out the finaid regardless of interview outcome-- any waitlisters bothering to fill out WashU's?

haha, despite my attempt to keep it gender neutral (by using "chanjurban" twice), the pronouns got the best of me. Blast!

"Thriver" letter here....

Guys, I am having a hard time believing that all of us got the more positive letter. I am not saying there aren't 2 different types of letters, but it seems that probably the majority got the "thriver" letter. In fact, after looking at 2005 mdapps who were not accepted to WashU, just about every one was waitlisted (only one was rejected, and I looked at a lot of them). Also, one of the mdapps people this year (Emory undergrad, 37 mcat) that was waitlisted said she was placed on a "High priority waitlist," whatever that is. So, while it is good to think that we have a better chance than others to get in off the waitlist because of the "thriver" letter, I think it is more wishful thinking than anything else. I'm still gonna hang on anyway, though. Good luck.

yeah, one of my friends who goes to washU undergrad emailed her interviewer and was told that she was on a "high-priority waitlist." But since the waitlist is allegedly unranked, we were thinking that this may have been the distinction between the two waitlist letters. But you are right, Lastleg, that it seems suspicious that so many people on SDN have gotten the thriver letter. Maybe it's SDN-skewed, like many things, or maybe there really is no significance to the two letters.

boohoo.

Another thriver here as well. Does anyone applying no how many people got in from the waitlist last year?
