I just stumbled on this thread, but would throw in my 2 cents.
I am a 4th year MS at the other Nashville med school. 🙂 I interviewed at Meharry 4 years ago and had a similar experience as one of the posters above. I interviewed there in Dec. as a non-minority student. On that particular day, all asian/caucasian but no AA/hisp interviewees, most are from Cali except me and a couple other dudes.
I wouldn't say they are "too" qualified though. Some of those cali dudes I talked to were worried because it was Dec and the Meharry interview is one of the 2 or 3 they got so far.
The whole day was sort of awkward because it was pretty poorly planned, and nobody gives us any sort of organized tour. Just have bunch of med students (who are mostly AA's) giving us this big Q/A session and sit down sessions. The dean of admission (female MD) was kind of uptight, I thought, but the director of admissions (who is a PhD or EdD but not MD) was nice though. He was very forthcoming about Meharry having its recent problems, and outlines the steps the school has undertaken to try to address it.
On interviews, I remember I have this microbio prof that asked me my GPA and MCAT's and basically asked me where my first choice would be. I forgot what I told him but it certainly wasn't Meharry, and basically he told me my stats were good enough to go pretty much anywhere. Then second interview we pretty much chatted about sports and stuff. We talked about medical school and my candidacy in about last 10 minutes of the interview, and he pretty much told me that it's a matter of where I want to go for med school and he will be happy to see me there.
In my 3.5 years in Nashville, I had the opportunity to interact with Meharry students on multiple occasions, including time on the wards. Most of them are pretty laid back and nice people (sometimes TOO laidback IMHO for a medical student). There are obviously exceptions, but I have to say that for the most part, many of their students' knowledge and/or clinical skill were a touch below what I expect an average med students to have. Their way of evaluating students during clinical years is very suspect, from the way I was told by some of the Meharry students I rotated with. Their history of USMLE pass rate is nothing to write home about either, although I did hear some improvement in the pass rate after they REQUIRE their marginal students to take Kaplans prep course the summer after their 2nd year. I have not seen their matchlist, but I do suspect many go into FP in rural area or other aspects of primary care, consistent with their mission to serve the underserved.
As far as my application goes: if I remembered correctly, about a month after my interview I received this letter that basically told me that I have been discussed by the committee, they all view my application favorably and I am on a list of their "acceptable candidates." They say if I have further interest in Meharry, I should call them or write them. Because it was January then, and I got my first 2 or 3 acceptances, so I didn't follow-up on that letter and basically just wrote them a letter to withdraw in May.
Ok I babbled enough. I'd be happy to share more of my (somewhat opinionated) 0.02. Just PM me.
