Okay... you may not be a Talking Heads fan. But, I post this as an example of when musical artists were actually artists.

Today's music just sounds so derivative and over-produced. I hear that song, "Rock Star" by Nickelback on the radio... and I almost want to grab one of my firearms and start shooting at the radio. All American Rejects? I'm not a fifteen-year-old girl. Anything on pop radio? Please put a knife through my eye.

And, don't tell me we have Coldplay or Keane or some other sappy, melancholic "emo" stuff that is brilliant. I have to take Zofran, Wellbutrin, and a shot of insulin before I can endure that stuff.

The only "artist" that I think comes close these days to doing anything interesting is Sufjan Stevens... and even he gets on my nerves if I listen to him for more than 15 minutes at a stretch (see above re: Zofran, Wellbutrin, and insulin).

Help me, folks. Let's hear some suggestions. I need to rekindle my faith in the music industry... that there are actually poeple willing to support, produce, and market interesting and entertaining music... and that doesn't make me want to either vomit or kill myself... or both.

I fear you'll never find what you're looking for if you're holding on to the Talking Heads. They were a decent band in a decade renowned as a musical vacuum.

That kind of music is no longer supported. Bands are interested in quick hits, and generally don't have the time to mature or develop a fan base. New songs are hits within weeks, and forgotten within months. There is constant flux in what is "cool", and money is thrown at the younger generation like never before, with their fickle tastes guiding the path that others follow.

Check out the link (you'll have to add a letter in the middle, unable to post as is)- its kind of old, but proves your point about Nickelback.

I second Wilco and Spoon... Also, the new TV on the Radio album is pretty amazing....

I am a Talking Heads fan for sure. A buddy of mine played horns for them, Dickey Landry. Did you see what David Byrne is doing now. He converted a large warehouse in NYC into an interactive organ. The organ is piped into the plumbing. Really interesting.

I hate the current Rock like Coldplay and the like.

Try Manu Chao, John Butler Trio, Mogwai. That should get you started since they are all different.

Everyone here knows that I like TOOL and Radiohead. These are very creative bands doing their own thing and influencing others on the way.

Hard to beat Zep and Hendrix though. Time stands still with these two.

Hey Cop what the F**K are you smoking?? those clips are awful

This might not be crappy enough for you but here it is:

from country to hard rock n roll, with a few stops at esoteric radioheadesque inventiveness.

but at their very best, simple power pop. toss "summerteeth" and "yankee hotel foxtrot" on your ipod, plug into your car stereo for that long trip home for the holidays, and you won't be disappointed.

I personally think Uncle Tupelo is much more enjoyable to listen to then Wilco. Check them out if you haven't already. I saw them perform for 3 bucks. Tweedy and Farrer were incredible together. To bad they hate each other.

Try some
Bob Schneider
Josh Ritter
Old 97's new album is WAY cool
And if you like base and a little funkyness, check out Mike Doughty's new album (of Soul Coughing fame)
Pick up a classic Townes Van Zandt album
Have you heard Death Cab for Cutie? (Just kidding....tee hee hee)
...but I do like the Decemberists. I just think they have a cool sound.

I think you would like the list above - but it is twangy at times, fast a lot of the time, acoustic most of the time, and fun ALL the time.

At bumbershoot this year, I was blown away with Thao and the Get down Stay Down.

Well, I'm not smoking anything anymore. I have a fondness for some of the mid to late 80's bands, that's all. Some people call that the "great black hole" of rock-and-roll music, but I think there was a lot of cool experimental stuff going on. Problem is, most of pop radio was Paula Abdul and other garbage. No one was listening to the cool stuff... or at least it wasn't get the heavy radio play. Remember Jane's Addiction? Ned's Atomic Dustbin? When Hillel Slovak was still alive and the Red Hot Chili Peppers didn't actually suck?

What about . . .

Iron and Wine (try The Shepherd's Dog if you're not in the mood for something quite as acoustic)

Devotchka

The Magnetic Fields

The Mountain Goats

The New Pornographers

Elliott Smith

Mason Jennings (if you don't mind a blatant Dylan rip-off)

My Morning Jacket

Band of Horses

The Flaming Lips

Newbie on the forum here, but I love perusing the gas threads. Great topic.

I do agree that a lot of modern music lacks originality and meaning.

You guys should check out my all time favorite band Coheed and Cambria.

The are extremely original in their sound and the best part is that there music tells and ongoing sci-fi/fantasy/horror story that is fully told in a series of comics and graphic novels.

Live they just plain rock out. No gimmicks, just strait for the love of the music.

And there lead singer Claudio has a pretty unique voice. Some people hate it. But if you get passed it and just listen to the music and the story it's very amazing.

Dredge. They rock your eyes out.

Cobra Starship sounds poppy at first... but catch their lyrics. Cracks me up. They did the snakes on a plane song. And their videos are hilarious.

i actually prefer john frusciante to hillel slovak, but the real credit goes to flea (one of the best rock bassists of all time, IMHO), and chad smith (who doesn't really get much recognition), who is also an amazing studio drummer when he's not playing with RHCP.

the old stuff is way better, but a hidden gem is "walkabout" on "one hot minute." maybe the only track on that album where navarro actually fits.

http://www.thewebsh*te.net/nickelback.htm QUOTE]

Sorry about the dead link I posted, it was working at the time... anyways, it was a brilliant display of Nickelback's lack of originality. The site had two different nickelback songs playing at the same time, one in each speaker. The transitions from verse to chorus to solo etc was at the exact same moment for both songs. The singer's voice changes tone at the same times as well. Its almost as if they recorded the same song twice with different lyrics... hmmm.

Hillel taught Flea how to play the bass. 'Nuff said.

point taken, fair enough. but...

not saying it's exactly the same, cos hillel was a great guitarist, but i'm sure somebody taught john coltrane how to play the saxophone. but we don't care who that guy was.

i'm guessing that most the the sick, unique sounds that flea makes on the bass are his own creation, and not what he learned from hillel 25 years ago in high school.

Also a fan of talking heads, and not so much of the newer music out there. For something a little different, try Sam Roberts. Good mix of many music styles

i hope and pray for a DMB tour bus accident. nothing personal, i just think he's a frat-house hack.

Don't hold your breath. He's this generation's Jimmy Buffet. He'll be touring for another two decades, with the same frat crew drinking wine and passing a J at the outdoor amphitheater.
