Hey everyone. I am currently a student entering second year university in Ontario who is considering pharmacy. I'm in the process of completing my prerequisites right now for Waterloo and UofT. However, I would need to take 10 courses to complete all of my prereqs by the end of second year. I felt that this would be detrimental to my GPA if I tried to rush too much. In the end I decided to leave microbiology (required for Waterloo) and physics (Required for UofT - since I didn't take grade 11/grade 12 physics...only the equivalent in 1st year uni) for the summer or third year. The reason I didn't take these courses is because I had heard about the difficulty of Orgo 1 and 2 and since I'm very weak in physics...I felt it would be better just to tackle them separately.
This leads me to my main question. I am somewhat unsure of how the application process works for both schools. I know that Waterloo starts its curriculum in January, though? If I don't end up taking microbio and physics until third year, could I still apply at the beginning of my third year (September 2012) even though I'm not done the courses at the time of my application (but am expected to complete at the end of the term). Would I still be able to apply to begin in the January 2013 cycle for Waterloo?
Also for UofT, how does the application work? I'm just afraid that if I hold back on taking those two courses, I'd be wasting an entire year...since I wouldn't be able to apply at the end of second year. If I DO apply at the end of 2nd year though, do I need all of my prereqs done, or just proof that you will be finished them before the application is due? Sorry for sounding really confusing. It all seems very complicated and I'm worried about making a mistake with my course selections. Thanks for any help 😀.

For UofT, you need to have all the prereqs before you apply.

For Waterloo, I think you can still apply as long as you finish the prereqs before the program starts in January. But I think they might give preference to those who have completed the prereqs.

If I were you I'd do all the UofT prereqs this year.

Pretty much this. For UofT, you need all the prereqs however you can take the courses in the winter semester and still apply. Basically, as long as you will have all the prequisities done and your transcript in by June 15, then you're fine 🙂

Ooh...well I have Organic Chemistry, biochemistry, calculus, and biology in the semester where I'd be taking physics. Since I'm pretty terrible at physics (no 11/12 physics in high school), I'm just afraid that I won't have enough time to focus on each subject while trying to maintain a decent GPA. If I chose to do physics in the summer I don't think the course would be finished before June 15. Does that mean I wouldn't be able to head to UofT in September 2012, and I'd have to wait an extra year?

I never took grade 11 physics, though. Wouldn't I need to take THAT course online first? haha

OK. Your best bet is to take both. It won't count towards ur GPA so you just need a pass and lets u focus on courses that'll ACTUALLY count towards ur GPA. I actually took Grade 12 this way for pharmacy. Here's the site: I think you get like 10 months or something for EACH course but I actually slacked off and finished the whole grade 12 in 2 months with the EXAM LOL. Do this: take grade 11 now and finish by sept and then sign up for grade 12 and do it in like april-june next year (as soon as ur school finishes)

I know a lot of people that did it this way. Its a hell of a lot better than struggling through 1st year physics at U of T.

LOL... I know what you mean. I initially took PHY131 but dropped it in like mid Oct (the first test avg was 38)

Thanks a lot for your help! Well I actually already took the university physics course haha...it's just that I need another one to fulfill the one-year req. Hm, if I take both 11 and 12 physics online I'm wondering how much that would cost compared to just taking the uni physics in the summer.
