Waterpik? Does it work?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I had bought one of these a year ago, biggest peice of doo doo I've ever invested in...probably because it was on sale and cheap. I really believe you pay for what you get, and I think its just too much trouble in the end. Mine fell apart and I eventually trashed it.

depends on what you expect out of your waterpik. I worked at a highly progressive "LVI/Full Mouth Dentistry" office that recommened waterpiks to all patients to improve their gingivitis and perio condition...before their full mouth restorations, while in their temps, and after they had their crowns seated.
Many believe that if you direct the stream of water irrigation at the teeth slightly occlusal to the gingiva, much of the stream will then be reflected sub-gingival. The idea then being that this is where many of the anaerobic bacteria thrive. the oxygen rich water then creates a bad environment for the anaerobes.( if you have never done this before, it may hurt and make you bleed but really tightens up the tissue and helps reduce pocket depths)
***this is just the theory and what I have seen clinically...I am not giving OH advice***
We saw many people with red, bleeding gums turn around to have healthy resilient tissue with water pik use.
Also great when people have temp crowns and bridges and can't floss... to flush debris away form the margins and keep the tissue healthy. Also good for those with fixed bridge work who can't use floss threaders to flush out under the pontic of their bridge.
Used correctly, I have seen many benefits to a waterpik, used thinking that it replaces a toothbrush...not so good
hope that helps,
hona
