hey,
i am not sure about how to tackle this as an fmg, but PM GYNDOC who gives great advice on this topic.

There are usually plenty of PGY 2 spots open throughout the year, as well as categorical PGY 1 spots. As a prelim you will have an advantage, since you are not being fired or asked to resign...most folks looking for PGY 2 spots are not doing it voluntarily!

So, do well in your year. Establish strong personal relationships early with your faculty, especially your program director and department chair. Those are the folks that can make the all important calls for you, and you need their support.

Do well on your CREOGs too, because your next program wants to be sure that you are going to pass your boards. Normally, I would advise an intern to just take the darn things, but if you are going to apply for a job, strong CREOG scores help a lot.

Also, keep an eye on the CREOG clearinghouse. Frequently interns leave OB/Gyn, at least a dozen or more each year. Those programs will want to fill. I would be of the strong position that if you find a good categorical PGY 1 open in September, your program should be supportive of you leaving. You will have a contract, but they cannot force you to stay. But, it is also no good to burn bridges. This is a sensitive area, and your PD could be either very supportive or very much against you leaving mid-year. But, you need to do what is best for you.

Basically, do your job as well as you can. Be the best intern in the program. Cultivate relationships and contacts, and keep your eyes on the job openings. Apply early when you find one you are interested in.

Best of luck

I agree with pruritus ani. Keep checking creog. Spots open all the time. Especially pgy2 spots.
