Anyone have any clue where i could get my hands on some wax and tools to play around with carving teeth. I am a predent student and had the opportunity to carve some teeth out of wax at the dental school and i enjoyed it. I would love to get some blocks and some tools to play around. any info would be great. I tried finding stuff online, but it was impossible. If anyone knows where i could buy some offline, or if you know that the dental schools sells it, i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

I'd like to know the same thing... In fact, my boss (a DMD) was just telling me today how that's mostly what we'll be doing our first year. I didn't think to ask her how I could get some, though. I'll ask on Monday and get back to you 😛

I read your blog. It's very insightful and thoughtful. I have been working at a dental office for about a year now, but I don't think I learn nearly half as much as you have. You have great reasons to want to do dentistry, and I hope you get into your top choice.

I took the DAT on Aug 22 and turned my application in June 19th. I feel like we are in the same situation. Many people told me Aug 22 was not a late date to take the DAT, but obviously this year is a little more competitive. I have only heard from Columbia and Boston. I don't know if I can attend my Columbia interview. I heard all the hotels have no vacancy. It's too expensive to fly to NY and stay at a hotel. I kinda want to just camp out at the airport.

Anyhow, if you want get those waxing material, I suggest you go to a dental school. I am currently a UCLA undergrad so it's really easy for me to walk to the dental school to buy some wax and a carving knife. I don't know if you have the same access. Anyhow, good luck with everything.

You can find blocks of wax at a jewelry supply store, in different hardness levels. If you can't get instruments at a dental school near you, you can definitely find them online -- search for "dental wax carver" on google, or search for names of specific instruments -- I use the discoid-cleoid often, as well as the Ward carver.

Carving is useful to practice, but you might also want to practice the additive wax technique. I think it's harder to master, it takes many hours just to get used to moving the wax around. At my school we don't do any carving from blocks of wax, we use the additive technique to wax up crowns for dental anatomy, then carve in the fine anatomical details. But the first week we had a little block with shapes to practice -- we made a dot, a tootsie roll, a little plus sign, and a comma! To do this you'll need a flame (bunsen burner or alcohol lamp), and a PKT instrument works well to drip the wax. There are some good descriptions and pictures of both of these techniques here: (check out dental waxing and carving documentary)http://www.apdentistry.com/dental anatomy.html

Unbelievable! I can't find a 3 star hotel under $450. I only paid $70 / night for a 4-star hotel in Philly (i.e. Hyatt) and $45 / night for a 4-star hotel in Indianapolis (i.e. Hyatt). Rents are unbelievable too. $2,700 / month for a small studio. I think if I study at Columbia I'll end up borrowing > $500,000+ for tuition, rent and other expenses.

I don't want you to get the wrong idea, that's not my site! It's fantastic, though, many thanks to the guy who made it.
