I consider myself to be right around the average for most DO schools, both in GPA and mcat. I submitted my application to aamcas two days ago. All my transcripts are in, andthe application is processing. Now begins the wait- did I take too long? Is it way too late to fight for a spot? I will say that I applied to a lot of schools (over 10), and my recommendation letters are ready to go. I can get supplementals out ASAP. Thanks for any advice.

You have nothing to loose but time/money.....give it a shot but keep your expectations in check.

well, my expectations now are that I would really need some sort of eye-catcher on my application to stand out. I waited way too long with the whole rolling admissions process, so I have no one but myself to blame.

I think I have some ECCs and tidbits to stand out....but I just get nervous with the whole "6 week waiting period" between aamcas and the schools receiving my information.

hopefully the sheer number of schools I applied to means that someone, somewhere, can find a place for me. Reminds me of that song "there's gotta be somebody for me out there"👎idea:

Since you already submitted I think you need to focus on the future rather than if it was too late. It varies, but I would say don't expect to be complete until early 2010. A couple schools invite for interview before secondaries are sent/received so that may help. Secondaries can be very important, so balance getting them completed with doing them well. If you put a list of schools on here, some might even give you a hint as to what essays/questions to prepare in advance for each specific school. For example, the Midwesterns want your info in a CV format which can be time-consuming just to compile your AACOMAS info in a different format. Some people might say that is unfair, but hey, I will let you know what I can.

God...January...what a mess up on my part. OK though, I will focus on what I can do positively.

Honestly I'm pretty sure I can complete the secondaries fast and thoroughly. I dont care what sort of crazy way they want me to write my secondary material- I've got so much energy in this whole process that I'm chomping at the bit to get GOING. My main concern is the AAMCAS process time. There's nothing I can do about this. deep breaths until then.

Clarification, are you applying MD or DO (or both)? You said AAMCAS, so I'm just curious. AMCAS and AACOMAS are different systems.

I would say fight for the spot! You won't know until you try, right? You can get clues about the essay topics if you snoop around the school-specific forums in the pre-osteopathic forums.

Out of curiosity, why are you applying late?

Sorry for the confusion, everyone.

I meant AACOMAS. I am only going for DO.

Perhaps somebody can tell me why there are so many people out there that are asking if it is too late to apply?

I mean this question is asked almost every week. I certainly support those with new question and concerns to post, but honestly if people can not bother to look for a minute at these forums for there answers ans must reask, perhaps they should consider a new career. I mean who wants a doctor that can't find the answer to his questions.....was that 25 ml or 2.5 L?.........

Come on guys, look for the answers before you ask.

Maybe they keep asking because it's a new week. 😀
"is it late now? ... how about now?"

I've decided to also apply to 3 Caribbean schools. People I've talked to say that these schools are MUCH faster in processing your application, since all the application work is done in-house/etc.

Now I might be in a bad situation where the MD schools want to interview me come early january, while DO schools will JUST be starting to get my apps. Hopefully I can have a large window to decide if I will accept any MD school offers? I dont want to be forced to accept one of these caribbean schools without even hearing back from the DO stuff 🙁 (especially since I would prefer Do to caribbean).

Carib MD is an option, but if you get into Carib MD this year, you probably would next year too. It sounds to me like you really just want to get in this year and Carib MD is a last ditch effort. Would you rather wait a year and be competitive at US DO schools? Do what you want, because then you will have options, but I would say don't accept a Carib MD school just to get in this year, if you want to do a US DO program. I think waiting and getting into a program you want would be best. I know it is hard though. I was in a similar situation and decided to wait a year, and click submit as soon as they opened. It worked out well for me.

I hope this doesn't sound rude or trite, but I really can't wait another year. I've already been out of school coming up on 2 years this spring, and I really can't take another year in this weird limbo. I'm just going to hope that everything will work out for the best.

hey no worries, last year I handed in my primary around this time too. Secondary by late december/early jan. I still didn't finish them until mid feb (applied too many schools). There were still interview invites, and got in few 2009 class. Its not too late, just hang in there and prep now for secondaries 🙂

Thanks for the hopeful words! 🙂 I'm feeling better today LOL

Hey Osteophopful...

I'm in a pretty similar boat as you
I'm also two years out of undergrad
I don't know why I delayed the process so long, but I've only recently sent out supplements to PCOM, CCOM, and NSUCOM...

I have yet to submit supplements to Touro-CA, OUCOM and NYCOM
I'm worried cause my stats aren't that great either...
3.05 cGPA, 2.91 SGPA, and 29Q MCAT

I think my clinical experience is pretty good since I've been working in clinical research since I've graduated in 2008

I just get very anal about my writing, so I worked for weeks and weeks on my essays, so I think my statements are stellar, and I have pretty good recs, but I don't know how much impact they'll have

I also don't have a letter of rec from a DO yet, I'll be shadowing one in the coming weeks.

I applied to Ross and St. Georges's, and am wondering whether I should go if I get in this year, or wait and reapply for DOs next year

it's a hard decision to make, I'm with you on that, let me know what you decide

If you have the same experience I did, AMCAS is taking an extremely long time to even look at your submitted primary (took mine 7 weeks argh). With that, use that time to your advantage and look at the school specific forum for secondary prompts, required materials, specific LORs, etc (ie: have the secondary material ready to submit for the day you get a secondary offer). You're by no means left out and all you have to lose as mentioned is time and money.

Seriously consider the pros and cons of being a FMG as "a safety" versus just waiting until June and submitting early for the next cycle and taking another year off. One year isn't huge in the big picture of things (your entire medical career future).

Honestly, dude, you MCats are good. Don't worry you will have a beter chance than me 🙂

I'm literally applying to every DO school in the country. I'm really not feeling good about Caribbean options lately. However, I'm still going to apply to SGU and ross.

2 whole years this spring. Relax. I've been out of school much longer than you. Don't go carrib just to get going in med school. Potentially a huge mistake.
