Should I write a letter to the school updating my accomplishments and stuff? Maybe write how I would be interested in an interview?

DocCallaway, I'm planning on getting a letter in the mail to them today or tomorrow. I called, and the lady on the phone seemed slightly annoyed by it, but she did say that you can either mail or email updates if you'd like. I figure that at this point, it cant hurt to send them some loving and some updated amazing grades 🙂

Hi Scowdeva,

Quick question. How are you going to send your grade updates? Via official transcript, unofficial transcript, or just via email? Not sure how to do send them! Thanks.

Well, when I called she told me an unofficial report is ok (since I would have to pay for official ones to be sent over). I can access it online, so I just made a word document of it and plan on printing it out and putting it in the envelope. I also have a letter written that describes the course content and my specific grades, plus what I have been up to since I completed my primary way back in June. She said to email or snail it, doesnt matter, so I have just been sending both an email and a snail. I know it might be annoying to the office, but I figure every time that someone picks up my file the more chance I have of hearing something! I will be placing my letter for Wayne in the mail tomorrow, working on finishing it up as I type this...

Ok great. Thanks for your response.

I Hope its not by mcat score, cuz i got a 32 and still have not heard anything. I had an interview last year, and nothing this year.

I feel for those UM kids, there are like over 800 of them that apply every year and they get no love from their school.

I know...🙁 no love for their own students...
This school is ridiculously difficult to get A's in and they don't even accept their own kids... sighhhh. I should've gone somewhere else... even football sucked this year. RICH RODRIGUEZ BETTER BRING ME A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP (and pryor 😀)

Anyone know if I have a shot at Wayne State (top choice)?

The ECs seem alright, but your GPA is below average. Can't really say what chance you have until you have your MCAT score.

Hey, you will just have to do very well in the MCAT. I would think that with a MCAT score of thirty five or more, you will certainly have a shot for the very first round of interviews. Your GPA is lacking, but if you do have improved performance in the last two years ,as you said, then you are not a *****, and your MCAT should show that. with a 3.45, you are actualy approaching my GPA, and I had a MCAT of 34 and I got a December interview. That should give you an idea of what type of chances you are looking for. The only numbers that you can affect now are the MCAT. Looks like you are going to be hitting the books over christmas for the Jan test.

Good luck and do well in the MCAT.

Cheers

35? Are you serious? Not everyone can get the 95th percentile. Anything above a 33 is an amazing score. I'd say anything above a 30 is a very strong score.

From what I know, if this is your profile, you have a good shot if you can hit about a 30 on the MCAT and you are in-state. Wayne has some love for in-staters, more so than U of M and MSU. The only thing I would suggest is maybe do something that makes you a bit more interesting and less cookie-cutter...you have a lot of great medically related activities, but what makes you interesting? Sports, hobbies, anything, can really help you to stand out in the thousands of similar applications they get. The feedback I have been getting is that with my numbers (pretty low), I have gotten a few interviews just based on being interesting! If you want details, please feel free to PM me, but I'm trying to stay anonymous on here until the app season is over. G'luck, and happy holidays!

You don't need a 35 on the mcat because Wayne is your state school (right? oh no?). That said, some words from my adviser that went something along the lines of this:

"To be competitive, you should strive for the 3.5 gpa/30 mcat range. If your gpa is lower than this mark, your mcat needs to be higher to help compensate for this. If your gpa is higher, you can get away with an mcat slightly lower than this range. E.g. 3.3/32mcat or 3.8/28mcat"

Now granted, the admissions process doesn't exactly work like this, because other factors such as ECs, your personal statement, LORs, interviews, and URM/disadvantaged status come in to play. Those numbers are just a ballpark idea of how competitive you may be with the rest of the applicant pool; it's certainly not set in stone.

In any event, with your grades, I'd aim for a balanced 30+ on the mcat at the very least. I would consider retaking the exam with anything less than that; otherwise, you run a greater risk of becoming a reapplicant. Good luck :luck:

Hey if you can show that your committed to serve the uninsured and poor that would set you apart form the others.. What really helped me was volunteering at a free clinic in detroit. Things like this show that you fit their desire to help those in the "guetto" detroit community.

Having said all that...just dont do something like this just to do it....you have to have a real passion for it in order for it to set you apart. They can tell in the interview how passionate you are about this.

congrats on folks who have gotten in!!! wayne state is perfect for the experience i hope to gain as a physician...and this thread has been very informative!!

i'm a late applicant, so i am only just planning for my interview in late january 😵; im not going to worry about it being late in the season as im excited about the opportunity--anyways i was wondering if anyone who has interviewed can give some feedback on when the day is over--so that i can figure out what kind of flights i can book. im on orbitz this very moment so if anyone has feedback asap thatd be AWESOME!!

thanks in advance!

I was accepted off the wait list on Dec. 24, but I don't think I can afford Wayne. I have an instate acceptance at MCW....hmm what to do?!

MCW is a great school, and its cheaper. Why would you want to go to Wayne.??.. unless you are seriously considering emergency med or ob/gyn.

I was working on a PhD at Wayne for a couple years, and I have lots of friends in Detroit. Plus, I just had a failed engagement and want to get as far away from the hometown as possible! 😱

Don't you think Wayne is a great school, too?!

Yeah I saw this and all of my hopes of getting an interview flew out the frosty, snow covered window 🙁

I'm going to WSU for undergrad and I'll be doing undergrad research at the Elliman building from January to August and hopefully further on. Plus I volunteer at Children's. Honors student and HSA member. Going for a BA in journalism and a BA in biology. Current GPA 3.69, but it'll be in the 3.70's when I apply if I have anything to do with it. Took 20 credits this past fall, only one non-science class, and walked out with 5 A's and 2 B's. MCAT this summer.

I want to apply for MD/PhD though...touch choices. Research, research, research. Neurology and gene therapy is what I've been focusing on. What other undergrad dares to read essentials of clinical neuroanatomy and neurophysiology 😛? Don't you dare give that ischemic stroke patient any clotting factors 😛

I am on alternate list, and I hope to study at Wayne too...and I was quite clear in my app that I wanted to do research in the future....hopefully, they still have room and love for me.

Cheers
Piyush...

Piyush, I just wanted to let you know that every time I read this thread and see you sign your posts "Cheers, Piyush" it makes my day a little brighter!

Also, I dont remember, is the alternate list different from the waitlist? I get confused by all of the different terminologies that different schools use!

So does this mean Wayne has filled its class is now onto the alternate list? Anyone know how/when Wayne uses the alternate list?

IIRC the alternate/wait list essentially means that you have been presented (by your interviewer) to the adcom and they have placed you into the "maybe" pile. This pile is then reviewed during the entire application cycle - meaning you could get shifted to the "in" pile at any time.
I don't recall hearing of anyone being shifted to the "out" pile while interviews are still happening (historically, they have interviewed into late March or early April).

I have no qualms about the professors or the curriculum at Wayne State, but the building and location aren't so great.

At some point, and I believe it was in this thread, that I read WSU makes approx equal acceptances on all the days that are listed on the interview day sheet. Now, I could have drastically misread that, but I get the feeling that those on waitlist/alt_list dont need to give up hope, just need to stay on track, and maybe send in a update/LOI to get some attention from the school.

I sent in an update letter in the last week of Dec, and in the coming week, I will send a Letter of Intent to study at WSU, so that the school will have something more to consider for the last week of January when more decisions are handed out. So, the question then is: are LOI good idea of WSU? How much hope should waitlist/altlist folks rely on? and wtf is the difference between waitlist and alternate list?

I distinctly remember hearing on the phone that I was put on alternate list and I should call back in the January date, but I got a ugly feeling when I was listening to that woman on the phone.

Anyone with any answers/suggestions/opinions/etc, feel free to answer the above questions 🙂

I hope ya all had a nice first day of the Year.

scowdeva, I am glad you feel that way, here is a little more brightness your way:

Cheers
Piyush.

I don't know. I always thought they did a monthly acceptance and reviewed applications every time for new interviews. Maybe they don't look at the wait list people?

Plus, what's the difference between wait list and alternate. I have a friend of mine on the alternate list and I think she was on the wait list last year if I remember correctly. What's the difference?

If I remember correctly, we didnt have "alternate lists" during the last app cycle. This must be something new. 😕

We're all on the same side, Piyush! I haven't seeen your whole resume, but from what I gather you seem like a very strong candidate. I was a bit surprised that you were waitlisted (also worried for my chances). 😕

I've just been waitlisted by SLU, but I really want Wayne State. I made it very clear that I have a lot of family in the area, and I have a bunch of research experience (which is apparently good for Wayne now?). Despite my volunteer experience and the fact that I've done a couple of medical research projects, not having actually been in the clinic/OR etc. with the surgeons seemed to have been a problem. That and not having worked a menial job before. 🙁

Good luck to everyone! :luck:

I'm waitlisted at Wayne. My application won't change much since I'm working full-time and doing volunteer work. I'm thinking about taking classes during the spring semester so that I can have something to update them about.

I called the Wayne because I missed the deadline to enroll in spring classes for credit. I wanted to know if they would consider an audited course with a letter from the instructor stating the grade.

The woman told me that those on the waitlist are ranked. And that regardless of updates the ranking won't change. I asked her again, so Wayne doesn't put much weight on updates. She said that's right. It might make a difference if "8 people" share your same ranking.

Can anyone shed light on this?

Updates that did/not make a difference? Auditing courses with a letter from instructor? How to get our rank number? Rank tiers?

hm...maybe updates are different from LOI's? To me, it seems like a strong interest/intent would hold more weight, anyhow.

Does anybody know where I can find a sample letter of intent for medical school? I am unsure of how to write what or what a proper format would be?

Hi everyone--I'd greatly appreciate any advice you can give me about my weird situation.

First some stats:
MCAT: 33S (V13, P11, B9)
BCPM GPA: 3.22
AO GPA: 3.83
Overall GPA: 3.56
EC: 4+ summers of research at or affiliated with WSOM (4 posters), 90 hrs ER volunteering, various school extracurriculars all 4 years.
Recs: Strong, including one from a professor at WSOM

Now, Wayne State was my top school until August, when they sent me a rejection pre-secondary. Only recently did I find out that I can meet with someone at admissions about any "final decision" they made. I'm having this meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 8.

Has anyone had such a meeting? Other than asking them WTF about me not getting a secondary, what can you suggest I say?

Also, am I too late for any hope of getting admitted this year?

Thanks so much for your help--this thread is great and I wish I had read it much earlier!

Are you saying you were rejected pre-secondary this application cycle or last application cycle? If you were rejected this cycle then obviously you don't have a chance this cycle.

Other than that I think you would be a good candidate for a science post-bac. What happened with your BCPM? That sends a red flag for me when comparing it to your overall GPA Were you a Bio/Science major? What happened on the BS section of the MCAT compared to your others? Obviously a 9 is a very good score but still.

All I can see right now is your BCPM GPA holding you back. Could you elaborate on how many BCPM classes you had and why it is low? Obviously if you were a science major a post bac won't help that much at all but if not then it could theoretically change a great deal.

Thanks for your input, TPM-SMX.
I was rejected post-sec this application cycle, to clarify. What makes you think that "obviously I don't have a chance this cycle." Doesn't Wayne's offer of a meeting to discuss what happened give some hope for an avenue to still apply--maybe there was a mistake or something. Also, the secondary deadline is March 1, 2008, so they could decide to change their mind and still offer me a chance--this is really what I'm hoping for, but I don't know if it's at all realistic.

I was a Pre-Med/Psych major, with 49 credits Sci and 105 OA. I've had 2 B minuses and a bunch of Bs/B+s and a couple of As in Sci classes. Post-bacc is something that I've looked into quite a bit (at Wayne, actually), but my GPA isn't that bad, is it?

Essentially, do I have any case to make for trying to get them to give me a secondary?

Thanks again

Your science GPA is a bit low...the average for accepted applicants is somewhere around a 3.5. Taking a few more science courses, and getting A's, could make a huge difference.

Also, their offer about discussing your file isn't really a chance to plead your case. Out of my four rejections so far, three of them offered to discuss my file (now or later in the season). This is just meant as a way for the office to tell you what part of your application is weak, not a second shot at applying. I doubt that they would reconsider letting you fill out a secondary this year. However, look at this as an opportunity to find out what the adcom didn't like about your file. If Wayne is definitely your #1, then you can fix that part and become a stronger applicant for next year.

I'm surprised you were rejected pre-secondary. The BCPM GPA might be a bit weak, but your overall GPA and MCAT are respectable. Can you elaborate on your EC's?

Upon request...ECs:
Research:
-2 summers+currently working full-time as a research assistant at an MRI research institute affiliated with WSU (I just graduated from Notre Dame).
-2 posters presented at an international MRI conference last year and 2 more upcoming this May (I'm third author for them).
-2 summers at WSOM working as a lab tech in an infectious diseases lab.
-5 semesters of work as a research assistant at two psychology labs during undergrad.

Clinical:
-90+ hrs of ER volunteering (last summer and currently).
-Translated 50 histology reports from Russian to English for summer after freshman year.
-Volunteered as a one-on-one "health coach" to a patient struggling with diabetes through a local clinic (5 months during Jr year).

Other:
-Treasurer (1yr) then VP (1.5yrs) of ND Russian Club.
-Taught kids piano for 2 summers.
-Worked on campus in student activities 2nd sem Fr year.
-Interhall Frisbee team Jr year.
-Performed with a classical trio 1st sem Fr year.

[I know there's a lot of research, but that just happened to pay better than other stuff🙂]

Yeah i you were rejected already this cycle the point of the file review is to help you out for next year's application.

I would suggest a post-bac and you should really be starting now if you want it to make any difference plus classes during the summer. Of course since your meeting is tomorrow you can see what they say. I'm not sure when the deadline for registration for a guest student is... Uh well pretty soon or too late considering they started the semester today.

So are you an out of state student coming from Notre Dame? That could be a problem too.

So are you an out of state student coming from Notre Dame? That could be a problem too.

Nope, I've lived in the Detroit area for the last 15 years. My mom works at WSOM, in fact.

The main reason why I've decided against doing post-bac right now (other than being late with the application, for which the deadline was Dec 1), is that I'm still waiting for interview from 7 schools. I've had 5 rejections and no interviews yet 🙁

Anyway, by the April 1 post-bac deadline, I'll know for sure whether I'll need the classes or not. Who know? Maybe I'll get in to MSU by then or something...
