I was wondering, if I have been placed on the waitlist in december, should I still call? Do they accept people from the waitlist before March? The last time i called, the lady wouldn't tell me anything, so I really don't know what is going on, or if I should call...
Anyone know anything?
Thanks!

you should have called. too late now, they closed at 5.
mail will be sent out this week, so if anything changed, you'll find out soon i guess.

the next call in date is feb 27 from 1-5pm EST. i suggest calling then.
last call in date is march 26

I was also accepted today, and while I'm very thankful for the acceptance, I'm now torn as to what to do.

On one hand, Wayne is in-state and close to home for me, provides a great clinical education, has the curriculum style I like (two-three classes at a time), and has online lectures that I like. On the other, I worry about an "impersonal" feel about Wayne (sort of like one person here described as Wayne feeling like Oakland University, where everyone commutes and does their own thing). Also, I was accepted to a few other schools, some of which have great research opportunities and renowned programs in specialties I'm interested in. So now I don't know what to do and on what basis I should make a decision on *sigh*

Anyway, I would greatly appreciate any advice/extra info that you guys may be able to provide. For example, is there a community feel to Wayne amongst the class or does everyone just do their own thing? Also, is it difficult to obtain research opportunities at Wayne? I know I want to do research in med school and would like to go to a school that helps in this regard; I haven't seen anything at Wayne advertised like a research program setup to help students in this regard. Is there one? Thanks in advance and good luck to those who are still waiting to hear, I hope you all get in as you seem like you'd make for great classmates and future colleagues. Cheers. 👍

It used to be that the instate tuition was hard to beat, but I would suggest comparing costs (remember to include living expenses - may be a big thing if you would be living at home) at all the schools (http://services.aamc.org/tsfreports/report.cfm?select_control=PUB&year_of_study=2008).

As for the community feel - it's partly what you make of it and partly where you live. Lots of groups (friends, interest groups and other ECs, etc) spend time together outside of class.
As for research it is becoming increasingly available.
As for reputation of programs in your fields of interest; how likely are your areas of interest to change? I ask since they change for many people (myself included).

You might want to step over to Wayne State University part 02 (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=362739&page=17) and ask some of those questions over there.

I finally got an invite from Wayne! The letter just arrived today. YAYYYYYYYY!

I misunderstood..I thought you had already interviewed and were being offered a spot. However an interview is wonderful news too! Congrats again!!! 🙂:luck:

Haha, ya I figured as much.

Oh well...I had almost given up on Wayne but now I get the chance to shine!

Interview is on the 6th of Feb. Less than a week.

And thanks for the congrats! Hope you get off that alternate list soon!

good luck with your interview! I really do think (especially at Wayne) they actually listen to what you have to say if its sincere. My MCAT score was holding me back from a shot at a lot of schools, but I'm really grateful Wayne saw other things in my application that demonstrated why I wanted to go to medical school.

Thanks! That really gives me hope...that I have been slowly losing! lol.

Sorry guys! I guess I should have been more clear: interview invite vs. offer of acceptance!

Congrats on your acceptance, dandelion! (if you already know that is!)...But if you don't, then I hope good news come through the mail soon.

what are your stats?

does wayne state not like their own students? Ive been reading about people on this forum that have a worse MCAT and worse GPA than me and have been receiving interviews. Im a presidential scholarship student that goes to wayne state and i keep getting passed up for interviews. whats the deal?

I wish I could answer that one. I don't know why my own province has been rejecting me either. There's an element of chance/luck in every stage of this process.

Yeah...but at least you can know that Wayne probably likes their own students more than that other school down the road from them. I am a UM grad and I had 10 friends from another institution applying, all of whom got interview invites....

The joke is that half of our class is from U o M... I think it is actually around 1/3 or 1/4.

Hey, I just got an invite (dated Jan 15!!--I'm in Canada). But I need to reschedule due to an exam, and their office is closed for the weekend. Has anyone had luck rescheduling? Are they accommodating?

They were very accommodating about shifting my interview back a couple of days - but I think that the applicant pool has changed significantly since then, so I don't know how they'll be now.

I miss piyush.

Wow there really are lots of Canadians applying! Any Canadians interviewing on the 6th of Feb?

And I miss Piyush too!

What are my chances to get into a medical school with the below info? I'm currently looking into Wayne State's medical school specifically.

I'm a sophomore at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. My overall GPA is a 3.64 and my science GPA is a 3.54. I have been doing research for two years. I am starting my own club this year and plan on running as its president until I graduate (will be a real club and beneficial to the community). Member of a few other clubs. I am starting to volunteer at the hospital this year and will continue to do so until I graduate.

I know I haven't taken the MCAT yet, but assuming I get around a 30-35 what are my chances?

I sent you a REALLY LONG PM 😛 Hope it helps give you a little reassurance 🙂

so ive been hearing some mixed things and hopefully someone will be able to give me a straight answer. i heard from some people that on feb 8 theyre making their final decisions on who gets an interview. after that, they will only be looking at people on the alternate and waitlist (no clue on what the difference is). does anyone know if theres any truth to this, or is that the date of our death sentence?

I posted this earlier in the thread, but when I was there, I interviewed with Dr. Norman (the assistant dean for admissions), and he said that they would try to interview until March-ish (he was very vague). After March, he said the only people that would be considered are waitlisters and alternate listers. So if that is true, then I can see how they'd send out their last invites at the beginning of February. But this is just my guess. Might be able to get more helpful/accurate info from the office themselves, methinks.

Oh, and apparently, the difference between alternate list and waitlist is that the waitlist is the top 5% on the alternate list.

The Wayne State matriculant stats for 2007 were 3.57 GPA and 10.10 MCAT, which puts you slightly above average. Build an upward trend and you should be fine. As for extracurriculars, I think you need to do more volunteering with more diverse activities. It doesn't necessarily have to be medically related. Being the president of a new club doesn't mean a lot, since the first few years usually mean building contacts rather than doing anything substantive. And of course, its easy to be president when you created the club.

Dang, not too many acceptances, I'm starting to doubt my hopes in feb. Do you all think that they are limiting flat-out acceptances or even interviews due to thier overacceptance last year? Maybe they will have alot more movement this year.

Although it's possible Wayne State has limited their overall acceptances at this point in the game to avoid another overenrollment issue, they are very clear that the time of year you interview does not affect your chance for admission. They give out 1/6 or 1/7 (don't know how many months they go for) of the positions in their class each month. As many people will be accepted in February as were accepted in October. At least that's what they say.

And in a bit of anecdotal evidence, I got accepted last Wednesday. 😉 So there are definitely still acceptances going out!

How much do alt list move? Looks like that by getting put on alt list, and not on wait list, I think my chances are significantly down, but none the less, anyone know how much movement happens on WSU's wait list and alt list?

Cheers ya all
Piyush

PS: thanks ya guys for missing me. I was called away to help out during the storm that hit Ontario. and before that I was wondering how much worth life is without an MD, and before that I was wondering if I wanted to be a camp counselor for an aboriginal literacy camp. And before that WSU said I am still on alt list...😡 And since I dont live to leave with a sad face, I think I will apply to the camp job, and good news is that they will let me apply even though the app deadline is passed,😀 'cause I was waist deep in snow pulling some old fella out and checking on him.

When I was at WSU, I asked my interviewer the difference between waitlist and alternate list and she said there was no difference at all. they are practically synonyms.

She also said about 50% people get off the waitlist at wayne.

I hope that sounds like positive news for some people?

your interviewer must be mistaken, cause the admin office told multiple people that wait list is top five percent of the alt list.

Hope that helps, and anyone that can confirm, please do. Anyone more info as far as wait list/alt list movement is concerned?

Cheers
Piyush

That may or may not be true. The school might interview the same number of people every month, but in the evaluation process they are evaluating the new people plus the people already on the wait list.

Has anybody gotten off the waitlist or alternate list to get an acceptance yet? I just went from alternate to waitlist...

according to the admissions office, yes

I wish they would have moved me from the alt list to the wait list..... Is there a ranking that they give out for alt list or wait lists?

Cheers
Piyush

The admissions office told me that people on the waitlist are ranked, while people on the alternate list are not ranked. However, they refuse to tell you your rank if you are on the waitlist.

I did a little digging around to answer my own question, and I have found that people from the alternate list have been accepted, but I have not found any evidence so far that people from the waitlist have been accepted.

I got off the waitlist to get accepted in december...so there is movement the waitlist. Also, this is just one story but my brother (3 years ago) was waitlisted until he finally got accepted in April. So there is still a good chance ...Good Luck 🙂

Interviewed yesterday, pretty awesome laid back atmosphere, definately my favorite interview of the whole process.

Yeah, I did, actually got there too early, I had to wait some time for my interviewer. Guess now all we have is the long 3 week wait.

Has anyone received an interview invite recently, to interview in March? I meant to call today, but forgot, to see if they made the final decisions for who gets an interview. Anyone know??
