Hi Everyone! With the 4/30 deadline quickly approaching I would really love some advice/guidance on choosing a medical school.
Background: Grew up in the NE, went to my state's public university, involved in behavioral psychology research for the past ~3.5 years, potentially interested in pursuing psychiatry
Wayne State - Detroit, Michigan
Pros
Netter SOM - North Haven, Connecticut
Pros
Location-wise, I could see myself living in either place. Not a fan of the cold but I'll make do!
TYIA!! 🙂
Background: Grew up in the NE, went to my state's public university, involved in behavioral psychology research for the past ~3.5 years, potentially interested in pursuing psychiatry
Wayne State - Detroit, Michigan
Pros
- more established school
- relatively minimal mandatory classes
- post-clerkship period of 14 months for electives, residency application prep, etc...
- more research opportunities
- all clinical rotation sites within a 20-minute drive, and being in the city of Detroit I feel as though this clinical exposure would be more diverse
- plethora of student organizations, student-run clinics, and outreach programs
- not true P/F --- some sort of internal ranking based on z-scoes??
- the curriculum is more traditional, M1 learn physiology, M2 learn pathophysiology
- exams are mostly faculty-created (only 15% of assessments during M1 are based off of NMBE material)
- I've heard negative things about the administration here
- larger class size of 300
Netter SOM - North Haven, Connecticut
Pros
- true P/F
- board-focused exams
- integrated curriculum
- relatively minimal mandatory classes
- small class size ~90
- early clinical exposure - MeSH program
- pretty solid match-list despite being a newer medical school
- newer facilities
- gave me the best impression on interview day, it seems like the administration and faculty genuinely care about the students, and the students are exceptionally happy
- the driving distances to the MeSH programs and clinical rotations (heard it's anywhere from 15 minutes - 1 hr)
- lack of research (only 10 students get to conduct research with Yale faculty, and it's through a lottery system)
- newer medical school, essentially unranked
Location-wise, I could see myself living in either place. Not a fan of the cold but I'll make do!
