To those that voted, care to justify it?

I would vote for Toledo because:

*Lower tuition, OOS students may be eligible for IS tuition after one academic year.
*Toledo has a smaller class size.
*Toledo accepts a higher number of OOS students.

You might want to mention why you're interested in comparing the two schools.

It's pre-Oct 15. you can't have been accepted to both Early Decision yet, I'd wonder why are you comparing both so soon, too.

I have gone on my Wayne Interview and have been pushing my Toledo interview back b/c I have not been able to decide which I would choose (if presented with acceptances at both). I was hoping to get some feedback from ppl that have been to both b/c it's hard to get a comparison of two schools just by reading opinions of ppl who have only been to one. Basically, if I realize that I would pick WS no matter what, I can wait 2 more weeks (when the decision comes out) and potentially save myself a plane ticket. Or is waiting two weeks at this point in the game too risky and I should just book it regardless and pay the penalty for cancelling? Then the other scenario is that I find out I like Toledo more in which case I would need to book...now haha...thanks for the responses so far!

Why don't you just withdraw from Toledo? If you're going to waste other people's time with this then why bother. 👎 Why did you even apply EDP?

You have all these schools that you applied to, and you have two other interviews on top of these two - why are you trying to make a decision now? Go to all of the interviews until you have an acceptance. You'd feel silly if you didn't get accepted to Wayne State right away..

this is prudent advice. you really shouldn't count on getting an acceptance out of just a single interview.

I didn't apply EDP. And I don't mean to waste anyone's time...just trying to possibly save some money...

I guess I can't really decide until I am physically at both schools to make the decision on my own. I was just hoping there would be some overwhelming consensus and that I could potentially temporarily save myself a plane ticket...

Still, if anyone has been to both, let me know what you think...thanks

Exactly. Look at my mdapps. I'm not canceling a single one of those interviews until I get an acceptance. You simply should not take any chances whatsoever in this process. There are too many variables, and more importantly, there are too many variables out of your control. If you are given the opportunity to interview, you should take it unless you have another acceptance.

I totally agree with all the other posters above - do NOT try to save money now when you don't have a single acceptance; the admissions process is far too unpredictable to make this decision.

That being said, I'd like to offer one piece of advice, in case Wayne State is one of the schools you get accepted at: Please research into the whole WSU-DMC contract issue. It's easy to brush it off, but not having enough rotation spots is a huge deal, and it certainly would affect your education there. I don't know what the status of the negotiations are now, but I know it was a concern for me when I was applying.

Best of luck on your interviews!

The whole thing with the WSU-DMC is making me nervous. Its already affected several residencies at the DMC, i.e. withdrew funding for these residencies so these residents had to go find other hospitals to train at. And, the fact that Michigan State's DO program is sending their students over to Detroit (by offering more $$) to compete with WSU students for rotation spots is not looking super great for the future. Read a little bit more about the WSU-DMC fight here...

Fear not though, these residencies are more or less relocated to Oakwood in Dearborn, as far as I know.

Wayne State is a really good school but my God Detroit is a ****hole

Quoted for truth.....

But, the school is in a "better" part of detroit, so living close by or commuting is still safe......

....But be sure to park in areas that are safe (stuctures or lots), or at least buy a club!(do both!) they practically give those things out here

If you are having trouble, why don't you GO to the interview?

Going to the school, seeing the faculty, students, professors, etc. will help you out.

You have four interviews atm, four potential options. Don't close it down to 2 and especially not before you have interviewed everywhere. i just dont get it 🙁

My choices right now are between these two schools, and I am still not sure myself. I, however, am a Michigan resident which means a little less money for year one. However, it kind of scared me how the tour guides said streaming was pretty much universal. I wonder how many connections/camaraderie there is in the class. Also, does anyone know which school is supposedly "better"? I don't know if there is a prestige difference or not, but I hope to return to Michigan for residency and I don't want to hurt my chances...

You'll build plenty of connections in Anatomy Lab and other outside lecture activities.

As someone that did attend lecture for the majority of M1-M2 to this point I can say that's not where most of my friendships within my class came from. I'm pretty sure this would be the case wherever you go.

From the Toledo perspective:
I do know that Henry Ford (in Detroit) has an affiliation with Toledo. You can set up rotations there pretty easily. I think St. Joseph's in Ann Arbor is going to be too, soon... don't quote me on that.

Either way, there's enough elective time your 4th year that you could set up elective rotations at any site you've got your eye on with a little leg work.

Don't know enough about Wayne State to answer the rest of your questions.

As for which school is better, it doesn't really matter. Seriously. Med school is what you make of it, not what it makes you.....

That being said, I personally am happy with Wayne State. There is a class of 300, so if you go to class you will meet a TON of people. Even with the streaming, there is so many mandatory labs for histo and anatomy the first unit you will meet most of the class just like any other school. Our class is very relaxed IMHO, but there will always be a few exceptions to that. From what some of the 2nd years that are repeating have told me, our class has been much less neurotic and freindlier as a whole. Hopfully next year will be the same.

Also, as far as I can tell clincal exposures at Wayne >>> Toledo

Henry Ford also has strong ties now with WSU now that the DMC is being a little cold. A lot of our third years are doing their whole year of rotations there.

It comes down to this. Where is the tuition cheaper? Go to all of your interviews and try to get in somewhere in state as that will make your decision easier. Second, do they allow video streaming of lectures? That is one of the biggest pluses of Wayne so that you don't have to drive down there every day. (I live 35+ minutes away). Wayne has a great patient base so you will see the worst of the worst for training. You will be able to do plenty of procedures.

As far as Detroit not being in the best of shape, Toledo isn't exactly Beverly Hills either. What is true, however, is that the northern suburbs are very nice. Many of our students live in Royal Oak, which is about 15 minutes away from school. Troy is slightly further north but is a great area with some of the best public schools in the nation if you plan to have kids and stick around for a while.
