Anyone have any comments about WVCOM? I have interview there soon and was wondering what others had to say about the school becase I really don't know much about it....Thanks

To be honest...
I didn't really like it that much when I interviewed there a couple years ago. The school was extremely small (I think it was even smaller than my high school!) and the town was too. I didn't like that the town only had maybe a bed and breakfast and a Wal-Mart. I also didn't like that in order to attend there I had to practice in WV for 5 years after finishing residency. I interviewed there in 2000, and things may have changed since then (i.e. they may have added some new classrooms or something) but I didn't feel like I would want to spend the first two years of my medical education there.

I also have an interview there coming up...
I have visited the campus several times and felt very welcomed by the students and staff that I met. Everyone was friendly and seemed genuinely glad to be there. The lecture rooms and the anatomy labs are modern and comfortable. Some of the other lab rooms and the administrative parts of the buildings are older.
The school is accepting an additional 21 students this year, to bring the entering class size to about 100. The extra 21 students will be participating in a new Problem Based Learning tract (PBL). Info is available on their web site http://www.wvsom.edu
DOtobe is a little confused about "practicing in WV" after residency. Those programs are part of a specific financial aid program... if you don't want to stay in WV, don't sign up for that type of aid.
Lewisburg is a charming small town, and WVSOM is very oriented towards rural medicine. If you are turned off by the size and opportunities there, then WVSOM is probably not for you, anyway.
Good luck with the interview!!

I see that couple of you have interviews set up at WVCOM. How are you planning on getting there? I go to school in boston so flying out of logan airport won't be a problem. Any idea where there is a big airport close? any hotels nearby? Thanks!

I don't understand why a medical school was started in such a small town like Lewisburg, WV. What do they do for patients in a town of only a couple thousand?!? Just practice on cadavers a lot?

WVCOM's program in rural medicine is highly thought of by U.S. News. As someone else said, if you are interested in that and aren't turned off at the thought of living in a small mountain town for four years, go for it.

I'm thankful that some people out there are willing to do it. 🙂

Well let me tell you that I too was skeptical about this small rural school. I was blessed enough to ge accepted to just about every DO school that I applied to. I chose WVSOM because of the 1 on 1 interaction with professors. I have been very glad I chose this school. I have tons on 1 on 1 interaction and the professors even know me on a first name basis!!! That makes learning much more enjoyable. Not to mention the rating posted by US News and World Report confirms thefact that WVSOM is a VERY good medical school!

I actually have a connection down there, so I'm not staying in a hotel, but the person I talked to today said that the hotel where the breakfast in the morning is, offers a deal if you tell them that you're interviewing at the school. Just call the admissions office and ask them. How about flying down? What is everyone doing for that? I'm thinking of flying into Roanoke, VA and renting a car (looks like a 2 hour drive).

I can't help you on what would be most cost effective, but... I'm originally from Charleston, WV. Charleston Yeager Airport is the largest airport in WV and is roughly an hour away from Lewisburg.

good luck 🙂

I'm flying from St. Louis to Charleston and renting a car from there!

I plan to interview on the 3rd. Well...if I can scrape up the funds for the flight and hotel I'll interview on the third. Does anyone know how many people they interview in a day?

I interviewed at WVSOM and was accepted there. I stayed at the Lee Street in , a great little bed and breakfast right down the street from the school. I loved the school. It's great. My interview group was small 4 people ( including me). We got great treatment, breakfast at the general lewis inn and lunch there as well. It is a small town but its pretty neat. The facilities are awesome. Overall it is a really enjoyable school. I won't be attending because I got accepted to my local COM UNECOM. I love it there also so if you would like to hear more about there I can tell you about that.

Do you really have to practice in WV for 5 years????? 😱

Lol that is an old thread and Amy is already a medical student at VCOM. =)

AFAIK the ONLY school that requires the 5-year contract is OU, thank-goodness.

I interviewed there a few weeks ago and LOVED it. I had my heart set on going to a school as close to JErsey as possible, but after interviewing there I had to put it within my top 3 choices of schools.

I'm all about the small town and small classes. That's exactly the kind of school I'm looking for. The classrooms were great and the anatomy lab was top notch. Everyone is super-friendly and it felt like a very welcoming atmosphere.

I want to go to a school where I feel comfortable and glad to get up every morning for class. I just know WVCOM is that kind of place.

There were a few things you'll find that make it a great place. A major part is how friendly and approachable the faculty are. I was told they often come by the library on weekends to help students. I was also told about a student who went to one of the anatomists' homes to work on his Model T and study anatomy. The faculty and some local churches also cook dinner for the students during exam week.

I just love things like that!

Stay at the General Lewis Inn when you go for your interview too!

You don't have to practice is WV for 5 years in order to attend there, tht is Ohio.

This is the key part in my post from last year! As far as I remember, when I applied in 2000 there was a "stay in WV for 5 years" thing. I guess that isn't the case now - good for the non-West Virginians!

So don't listen to my earlier post in this thread 😛

That model T professor story must be a myth or legend since I was told the same story! Doesn't mean it wasn't true... but still

Why is it a myth just because they told you too? BTW, I too was told the story when I interviewed there, but they told us which prof it was, so all you have to do is ask if you think its a myth.
