I do enjoy a Sleeman's Honey Brown lager from time to time. That said, I usually carry my stethoscope in my pocket, which is a 3rd experimental group that this paper never considered.

IMO, the stethoscope anywhere near the neck looks very tool-ish. Reminds me of all of the MSI's overly excited for their first OSCE.

I remember reading a similar article by the Brits. Their consultants favor the 'traditional' style, because it emphasizes the size of their...knowledge.

Now the Canadian government will tie physician reimbursement to stethoscope placement. Those who wear it in the "fogey style" will make more, because it will be assumed that they will be more efficient.

The pocket carry is more of a pain if you are using the scope a lot. If you only need it a few times a shift (ie you are on surgery) the pocket is great. But when I need it every few minutes I like having it around my neck. Plus my pockets are full of crap the residents want me to carry.

I ditch the white coat at every opportunity, which leaves me with not much pocket space. Around the neck is much easier.

You need to get cargo scrubs or a stethoscope holster. They work great, and UAB gives them out for free at SAEM meetings at their info table. Or, you can get them online.

I use the pocket so far. I have a stethoscope that likes to get stuck in my hair (the tubing part of it), so around the neck isn't an option unless my hair is completely up...which takes a lot of effort on my part.

How about the old over one shoulder carry? My stethoscope irritates my neck if I leave it on too long. So I sling it over one shoulder, although if you bend over too far it falls off! Dooh! Plus it does seem "tool-ish". I like the cargo pants option the best when I can get away with it.

Also the nurse managers, the chaplains, the phlebotomists, the PAs, the pharmacists, and the pre-med students.

Hence no white coat here.

Almost all of the EPs here actually wear casual clothes (e.g. khakis, a collared button-up shirt). Oddly enough, the *absence* of a white coat seems to be the best way to identify a physician.

If it's a weekend, and someone comes in wearing jeans I usually assume it's one of the consultants on call.
