Wow. Creighton secondary is online this year. YEAH!!! But they got a new question:
-----------------------------------------
Describe a non-science course and/or professor that has had a major influence on your:
A: Desire to become a physician, or
B: Approach to the practice of medicine.
Please limit your response to 2000 characters (approx. 250 words).
------------------------------------------

What if non-science professors had zero influence on my pursuit of medicine. Can I state that in my secondary. Why lie? I mean some people may have other experiences. Also, how can someone have "an approach to practice medicine" when they truely know nothing about medicine. Sure, I did rotations, shadowing, volunteering. I know how I would treat people while on rotations and how I would like to be treated, but that's it.

You'll need to come up with something! This kind of question is often asked at interviews too...
They really don't want to hear that non-science professors had no impact on your approach to medicine...

no non science professors have even left an impression on me really, let alone influence my decision to enter medicine. lol

Wow that is a weird question!

How are the rest of Creighton's secondary questions? Could someone post them please!

Do you think that a psychology professor or course (like abnormal psychology) would count as non-science. I think it would, but I wanted to see what you guys thought. I'm interested in psychiatry so it would be great if it would count.

I am in the same boat as well. I took a Health Psychology course and it was very informative in regards to the effects of personality on health and chronic disease. I was going to talk about this course but wasn't sure if it is "non-science." I didn't include it as part of my BCPM. 😉

The other question: Why Creighton?

ew, those questions blow. I would probably just make something up about a prof. that always supported me and told me to never give up during any hardship during college.

👍 You se, I do not like secondary questions that make certain assumptions about their applicants. I bet not everyone had a non-science professor that impacted their life.

Read again, it's not ONLY about a professor, it can be a course, too. I mean, you sure have some ideas about how medicine should be practiced and how a doctor should behave? Why would you behave in one way and not another? Tie it to a psychology, ethics, or sociology class you've taken. Maybe even tie it to some book you read in an English class. There are many books that touch on the issue of illness or medicine as a profession, for example. I don't wanna give any specific examples due to the possibility of plagiarism (and b/c I will be filling out Creighton's secondary soon, too), but that's a general idea that should get you going.

You guys seem like some shallow applicants. You cant come up with any non-science professors or non-science courses that inspired you in any way? Seriously? College must've been a terrible experience for you guys. Branch out once in your life and put some passion behind something other than the med school prereqs.

As far as the "why XX school?" questions, do some research! Jeez, ask students call them up and ask for more information. Dont apply so blindly based on stats alone. Find out the personalities of the schools you apply to.

i think the other question is worse personally. "why creighton?", well wtf I don't know, you're a medschool with the right stats. yeesh.

I even searched their website for something distinguishing that I could write about, and there is NOTHING distinguishing about creighton. How are you guys answering this question?

that whole jesuit school thing is distinguishing, just in case you missed that part. that is what i used to answer mine. jesuit principles/missions are not just religious but they are very service oriented. look into it.

I suppose. Seems so weak, but I did emphasize service and patient interaction in my PS as the reason to prefer doctoring to scientific benchwork. Anyway thanks though cause I was really having a hard time writing anything for that one.

For the second question on the secondary I talked about my experience in my philosophy minor and in particular my research project in the philosophy of science. I wrote a paper im trying to get published on the philosophy of biology (biological theory construction) and I said that the experience has affected my approach to medicine in that biological theory construction is medically relevant and I am now more confident in my abilities and have considered far more approaches to the scientific method etc. Worded more eloquently of course but that was the gist of it.

Have you taken any bioethics or sociology classes maybe? Classes CAN be non-science and still relate to healthcare. If you absolutely cannot think of anything, than it's probably a sign that Creighton is not the right school for you. Chances are that they are looking for applicants who have shown a strong interest in subjects other than the sciences.

I dont know if i'm intepret this wrong but does the essay mean, describe a non-science course and/or ANY professor (not a non-science professor)??? Does the non-science part apply to the professor as well???

No, I'm pretty sure the question meant a non-science professor. I was having a really hard time with the second question and then I thought about a Cultural Anthropology class I took 10 years ago. This class influenced me to get my second bachelors degree in Anth.

For "Why Creighton?", do you guys think that it is acceptable to write about the Catholic thing? My family members are really strong Catholics in the Omaha area and I went to Catholic school for elementary but I don't really go to church anymore. Would it be silly to mention that my uncle went to med school there and that I had always wanted to go to Creighton as a child bc my uncle had gone there? I don't know. It'll be easy to say that I want to live in Omaha bc almost all of my family lives in the area but should I mention any of these other things?

Family ties to schools can be very important for some schools. It probably wouldn't hurt to mention your Uncle. It shows that you have a better depth of understanding of their program than just reading about it on the internet like me. 🙂

A life-long desire to attend there seems great as well if you can capture how that motivated you to accomplish specific things leading to their school (i.e. I have always wanted to attend Creighton SOM...therefore I did these things to prepare myself for medical school there)

It is a Catholic school, I wouldn't mention how devout or non-devout you are, rather that being raised in a strong Catholic family has instilled values in you that match those espoused by the medical school and medical community in particular.
