weird GW acceptance notice

i got the acceptance letter to GW yesterday and it came with a "notice of acceptance" - a contract it says to sign and return. so the weird part is, it says at the bottom that "agreement is only valid if returned by Jan. 4."

Well, i didn't get back to my apt. after break till the 5th, so i didnt even get the letter till a day late...does that mean i've lost my acceptance to this school?

also, isnt it illegal for them to demand a decision from you before may 1st? in other words, isnt that the official date you can keep multiple acceptances until?

oh, and something else kind of disturbing- there is a clause in the contract that says they can rescind your acceptance if your performance in classes is "substantially lower" than at the time of application. i had a good gpa (3.8) till this past semester, but b/c of traveling, secondaries, etc. (plus lack of motivation!) my gpa was like a 3.1 for fall. is that low enough for them to rescind the acceptance or is more like you have to fail...some people have told me they just put that in there to scare you into staying motivated...

can anyone shed some light into either of these problems in the acceptance?

I'd call them about missing the letter due to the Winter break. Hopefully they'll grant you an extension due to the circumstances. As for the May deadline, this is simply a suggested guideline from the AAMC, and not a hard and fast rule. What the deadline on the "agreement" you received means is that you have a limited time to accept GW's acceptance. You can still be accepted to other schools, and aren't bound to attend GW.

Also, it seems that several schools, if not most, place a contingency on acceptances that you should maintain acceptable performance. I doubt that a 3.1 will get it reversed, but I don't know much about GW.

I'd definitely call ASAP and explain why you didn't receive the letter.

Would you mind posting when you interviewed at GWU. I had an interview a few weeks ago and was wondering how long it takes them to respond. They said 10 weeks, but i'm hoping it will be less.

I received the same letter in October. I submitted the contract by the deadline date since I knew I could still change my decision before May 1st if I decided to attend another school. I hope this helps.

carolina- i interviewed in mid oct.- it took them a little over ten weeks to make a decision and the packet was waiting for me when i got back from break...good luck!
