Just of out curiosity, what are some weird reasons you want to go to a particular med school

For me (UMiami) its because my favorite show (Burn Notice) is filmed there

This is just a fun thread aside form the usual serious ones on pre-allo

They have LCD tvs above their urinals.

Honestly that's why I'm working where I'm working now.

Lol I was going to post the Aziz Ansari burn notice vid! -flat beat me to it.

My state school because it's cheap. I don't want the burden of massive amounts of loans to influence my choice of specialty in the future.

It's also conveniently close to home, and I know all the good places to eat. And after going to a boarding school for my last 2 yrs of high school, going to college 900 miles away, and studying abroad in the UK this semester, I could really use some time with my family.

Applying next cycle though so who knows, maybe I'll end up at a Chinese med school instead

P.S. Sorry if my reason wasn't weird enough

FOOTBALL!

UCSD==> 1.5 miles of pristine Pacific coastline is owned by the school including the best beach break in America (Black's Beach). If I didn't say I go to UCSD for the surfing, then I would be lying. Nothing better to forget about a heinous CP exam than walking to an afternoon surf session straight from lecture hall🙂

UMich, because the video they email with their acceptances is pretty funny.

And, you know, that whole top 10 thing.

just googled mapped the ucsd campus. you sick, lucky, bastards. 😡

That was my reasoning for going to Pepperdine for undergrad. In fact, I did get to surf 4-5 days a week at Surfrider (100+ yard pointbreak)

A few reasons why USC is my number 1 choice:

1) P/F w/ all lectures streaming makes it so that I can drive to malibu in the morning, surf, study at pepperdine, surf at sunset, and drive back downtown at night 🙂

2) USC football games

3) (actually my real #1) County+USC hospital. What a crazy place... Not many med schools can offer a comparable clinical experience in my opinion

This is an awesome reason. I can't imagine going to a school that isn't P/F and that doesn't do podcasted lectures. I don't think I would make it through medical school if lectures weren't podcasted, fo' real.

gives me the best chance at a top residency. i don't do weird 😎

Good student run acapella group. Seriously.

It's not my top choice at all but one school I fell in love with was Georgetown because it reminds me of Hogwarts. But then I remember the cost of tuition and ridiculous cost of living around the area, oh and the limited parking and my inability to parallel park.

My top choice is UVA (it's a building thing again).

During the three-week-period several years ago that I seriously considered law school, I decided that I wanted to go to Cornell because it looked like Hogwarts.

Then my brain kicked in. (But still. Look at it! http://www.flickr.com/photos/foreverdigital/3237217476/)

This is a perfectly legitimate reason. I applied to Yale because of the Hogwarts-esque picture in the MSAR. I almost (was this close) chose an undergrad because it had a castle.

One of my 2nd choices became a top choice because it has columns everywhere on the grounds, even in the lecture hall.

I like the city its in and their sick-boy matches (cinci). I'd eat the poop hotdog fur sure.

Man you guys sure love your architecture, as long as there isn't bullet holes in the walls and poop on the ceilings, I'm happy.

@bl4ckout, where is your top choice?

b/c the cute doc i have a crush on went there for his med school

I could never really get into that show, the doctors seemed such like dicks, bt maybe that was the point?

So what I got from this thread was that TV's above urinals and incest are okay.

🙂

Sean macnamara was the "nice" doctor on the show... but even christian troy, the supposedly callous doctor, has his tender moments (eg. with his son)

It was a great show in the first season, but really got out of control with the twists and turns and orgies and incest.

So I'm going to go with a semi-silly, semi-silly reason...

The SIM labs looked like they would be a LOT of fun. The fake -scopy/-surgical tools in particular were almost enough to make me want to have a rotation with a GI doc or a minimally-invasive surgeon someday.

Columbia, because it has "surgeons" in the name. And they're nicknamed the College of Surgeons and Surgeons.

Harvard and Mayo, because they're two of the few schools that aren't officially called a "school of medicine", but rather the old-school "medical school".

Harvard, Hopkins, and Columbia, because their affiliated hospitals are good enough to have an ABC documentary series on each of them.

WashU, because they asked for our high school GPA and SAT scores on the secondary.

Stanford, because I wanted to go there for undergrad.

why do they want our GPA and SAT? :scared:

This is sort of a --- twist in the plot---

but I have a weird reason why i've recently decided I don't want to go to the CA schools I applied to...

I don't think California is going to be able to survive much longer!!! ---political/economic and geological reasons mostly (it's possibly going to float off to sea one day)..

Don't want to invest money and time into a place where I can't have opportunities to do what I need to do.

EAST COAST ALL THE WAY!!
