I am curious as to whether or not it's some kind of faux-pas to shadow your own primary care physician. My FP is one of the most amazing doctors I've ever met and part of the reason I want to go into medicine. I would love to see how she goes about her day, but at the same time I wonder if it would be weird or violate some kind of patient/physician boundary. And it doesn't help that she intimidates the hell out of me 😛 Thoughts?

I shadowed my orthopedic surgeon. It worked out just fine-I didn't find it awkward or anything. He didn't tell the patients that I was also a patient of his, so perhaps that helped.

But I don't see anything wrong with it. You already have a relationship with this doctor, why not shadow them? It's not like she's going to introduce you by saying, "This is Billy, he's shadowing me...oh, yeah, he had the same problems with the flu last year...."

I don't think it is wierd or anything. I shadowed my FP doc and it worked out well. I actually felt more comfortable asking him questions about school and all. It would only be wierd if they shared information about you which to my experience doens't really happen. Good luck!

Yeah I think it's easier to ask your FP if you can shadow them. I shadowed him 2 Summers ago and I had my mom ask him for me. It worked out great, he was really cool about it.

I think it's a great idea, actually, be glad it's an option!

I don't really have anyone I consider to be "my" doctor. I've moved and switched insurance so many times, I basically just end up seeing whoever takes my insurance in the town I happen to be living in at the time!

Now that I am trying to find physicians to shadow it's hard because I don't KNOW any of them. I would love it if I had one doc I had a preexisting relationship with. Plus you have the benefit of networking through her- ask if she knows any docs in other specialties and would put in a good word for you to shadow them too and maybe broaden your experience.

Definitely take advantage and good luck 🙂

you're shadowing her ...not going on a date lol

i shadowed my surgeon...it was nice bc when he would introduce me sometimes he mentioned my problems/procedures to the patient (and how we were alike), which seemed to put them more at ease with me and made them less nervous about needing surgery
