Today we had our first micro lab. We gram-stained various bacteria from broth and from agar. When I looked at my agar e-coli stain under the microscope, they were DEFINITELY still alive. I mean, one of my classmates said "Nah, it was just floating around in the oil," but they weren't moving like that. They were zooming around in zig-zags n' ****. They also had a very purple color (as opposed to a red one), which makes no sense to me, unless I didn't wash off the iodine well enough or something.

WHOAH.

Nope, I definitely did. And even weirder, none of my other cultures were alive.

I think that depends on the situation. If they are cool/ interesting heart beats then it's not weird. If it's a I LOVE YOU AND THE SOUND OF YOUR HEART YOU WILL BE MINE situation, then it's a little weird.

You have micro lab where you have to do Gram stains? That is weird.

Yes. And half the lab is "hai guyz look at these different mediums we already made for you that DIDN'T WORK. Wow aren't you learning?"

It's not abnormal for the fixed, dead specimens to be moving (see Brownian Motion).

This can happen if the crystal violet is left on for too long or if you did not decolorize adequately.
