Hi. I recently purchased the welch allyn harvey elite. I'm starting med school this fall and am CLUELESS about stethoscopes. I chose this model off recommendations from this site.

Anyways after I got it, i was playing around with it and saw that it came with two different diaphragm discs. One thats plastic with circular effects on it and another one that just looks like a circle cardboard with a welch allyn hologram printed on it. What the heck is the difference between the two? Or is it the same and purely for aesthetic purposes.

If it is the corrugated piece, it is for medium and low pitch noises; it functions as the bell in a stethoscope, only larger. I believe a bell is also provided for pediatrics, etc.

You'll learn all about it in due time. Good luck, and congrats

I have never played with a welch allyn..how is it? I have a Lit Master Cardiology

We all got the Harvey Elite from our alumni society and it came the exact same way as yours. Basupran's right about the corrugated diaphragm but it's supposed to work with really light contact (the weight of the scope alone). Most of us replaced that with the flat diaphragm (it's actually plastic, not cardboard) since that's what most people are used to and therefore could teach us how to use it. To do that, peel back the rubber rim on the diaphragm, pull off the corrugated one, replace it with the flat diaphragm and put the rim back on. If you really want to learn how to use it, Welch Allyn still has the old, expanded manual for the Elite and DLX up on their website under the DLX triple-head page.

As for Basupran's question, I've been alternating between my Elite and the Cardio III and the acoustics are better on the Elite but I've never had any problems hearing what I'm supposed to be hearing with either (though I like having the tunable diaphragm when I'm doing observed phyiscals; I do check high and low frequencies but it saves any debate).
