I was reading some past posts and many say whether a program has well known faculty is important for fellowships, etc... I was wondering how does one know who are the well known professors at a particular school? Pubmed? Word of mouth?

That is a very good question.

Here are some ways to figure out:
1) If someone has a high academic position (chairman, department head).
2) If someone has a lot of publications.
3) If someone gets invited frequently to be a guest lecturer.
4) If you see someone who is featured frequently as a speaker at national meetings.
5) Lastly, ask the senior residents and fellows.

Lectures do not mean much. Many of these may be drug company sponsored, invitations by friends, etc.

Here are a few things you can look for in order to get some idea:

Look up number of published papers on pubmed as well as textbooks, etc.

Academic title. In most institutions, it requires a significant amount of academic work to be promoted to the associate professor level and much more to the professor level.

Talk to the people at your medical school that are in the same subspecialty.

Lastly, remember that being well know does not mean they are good teachers.
