Sorry, but it's Welch-Allyn, and I believe Heine.

And, I personally like Welch-Allyn but I hardly ever use it.

I have Heine... and I like it. But, I've used the welch-allyn too. I think the Heine is better made personally.

The Welch Allyn is a really top quality instrument. They also make a nice Retinoscope head. I wish I had waited & got one of the new Lithium rechargable batteries though.

Having said that, I hardly ever use it. Maybe only a couple of times per year. It's good for uncooperative kids, bc you can stand back & get a good look at the red reflex.
I don't know how neurologists & neurosurgeons can get a good idea of the fundus using just the direct. What is really amazing is that many moons ago, the early retinal surgeons used to use the direct ophthalmoscope to find & treat peripheral retinal tears. Don't ask me how, but that's amazing.

I have a Keeler -- I think they have the best optics. Welch Allyns are the most popular because they've been around the longest, though, so you're more likely to find them in offices when they're wall-mounted.

You might be right there. I've never used a Keeler direct, but after borrowing a Heine & Keeler Indirect for a couple of weeks from the supply companies & comparing them, I found the optics of the Keeler were much better. I don't know why, but I just got a much better view with the Keeler

That's why I bought a Welch Allyn, bc every Emergency Department in Australia has Welch Allyn on the wall & it's always easier to use an instrument you are famiilar with, esp for the thrashing, drunk or demented GOMER in the ED. (Although I guess, I'd always use the indirect instead)
