I have some questions about the Western Alternate list this year that maybe someone out there in cyberspace can shed a little light on.

First off, as far as i know, there has been absolutely no movement on their alternate list as of today (july 1st). Do you guys think it's possible that they go all the way up until the end and have NO ONE get off the list?

Also, at this point, how many people realistically do you think will get picked up off the list. I think they said that they have quite a few on the list (approx. 60 people). If you had to guess, what would be a realistic number? 5? 10? 15? more?

Finally, is there any one out there that's in the western class but is waiting for their first choice school at this point? Anyone know of any people at western that could possibly give up their spot?

What's up, buddy?

Yeah, we're still in the same boat. I wonder if they're waiting to have a massive meeting until after the 4th then send out a bunch of letters then. I know that from reading the board there have been quite a few people who have left Western - so there should theoretically be spots open. They said during the interview day that 2/3 of the people get accepted off the waitlist -- but who knows. I'm frustrated. But, if I had the honor of getting the letter in the beginning of August I'd still pick up and move down there. Maybe there will be a movement soon.

So how are you guys passing the hours until Western tells us one way or the other? Lately I have been picking up the phone every few minutes just to make sure that my phone is functional and has a dial tone...

Seriously though, the wait has been awful, I would give my right kidney for a spot in the class (I already pledged my left kidney to Touro... i am in big trouble if they both give me the thumbs up)...

Only time will tell my brothers in arms!!

clap: Well I just got off the waitlist last Monday and I did accept the offer. clap: I know that the admissions people were expecting to have some more movement arround July 7th, so hopefully you will all be receiving calls real soon.

I finished up my application for the class of 2008 and mailed it out today. I'm hoping I just wasted a few hundred bucks and that Western will call me soon!!!

I hope to be joining you in the near future. In speaking with the Admissions people the last few weeks, they've told me several times that they haven't called anyone off the list yet. I wonder why that is.

Do you know how many people have been taken off the alternate list?

Do you happen to know how many people they are planning to take off around the 7th?

Congrats and well done! You are now a part of a very special communitiy of people and you should be beaming with pride. If you aren't already a part of the Western Class of 2007 Yahoo Group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/comp2007 that your new classmate Tae set up, i totally recommend it... it is composed of mostly your classmates, a couple super helpful second years, and a couple lowly waitlisters like me... come and join the party!

I just got an email back from Western Admissions and it read that there hasn't been anyone taken off of the alternate list yet and that they were hoping for some movement after the 7th. Hopefully it will be a really big movement so I can make the movement down to SoCal!!

Brian -- loved the phone conversation. Be sure she calls you at work so EMS personnel will be around

Do not get discouraged at all. As far as I know, they're calling people til like the day before school starts, literally. I'm guessing more than 50% of people on the list will be admitted. They need to meet the quota of number of students cuz u'll lose about 10+ people in 1st semester. My class losts about 20ish people in 1st 2 yrs. Alternates mean nothing as to how successful u'll be in class. I was called like a week b4 term starts, and i rank top 30-40 in my class. Keeps the hopes up, and best wishes. It's a good school, although recent scandals are abit upsetting.

I am pretty pissed at western. They were initially one of my top choices (since they are in CA). I received my secondary fairly early and submitted it before 9/1/02 (well within their 30 day deadline). I was expecting some kind of notification that they had indeed received my application. I heard nothing. Until last week that is. I received a photocopied letter that read something like this:

Dear applicant:

We received your application...[yada yada yada]...
Unfortunately, we were not able to offer you a seat for this years class as it has already been filled. [blah blah blah]...

Now I would have definately turned down any offer for an interview as I've already completely committed myself to UHS, but I would have appreciated a little more professionalism on their part. I spent a good chunk of money to apply to their school and they didn't give me the consideration of a form letter printed with my name and a real signature on it. If this is how they treat people who give them money, then I'm glad to not be a student there.

Ok, there's my rant, enough... but they can definately expect a complaining telephone call sometime next week.

Thanks for the encouraging words. I was curious how they fill the quota though - since they don't lose the people until the end of the first semester. Do they bring people in after that semester or do they just pack the first semester with 10 more people to compensate? Any information would be helpful. Thanks again.

Wannabe -- That really sucks. Did you ever contact them in between time to see if they received your completed application? I don't blame you about making the phone call next week...

Hopefully we'll hear some good news next week. The wait is surely difficult, but hopefully it will all be worth it.

Wut I meant by meeting quota is they need to take into consideration of number of people dropping during the 4 yrs. Say they need to have about 150 graduates per yr, and taking into consideration 20 people dropping in 4 yrs, so they'll admit 170 people. About 140, in that example, will be accepted while the rest are placed on alternates. Though they say class is "filled", there's actually 30+ more seats they can fill in addition to those that declined acceptance. Good luck guys and I'll probably see u guys in ICM as facilitator.

Forensic chick--a counselor said that around 60 alternates were selected to be on the waitlist...but take it with a grain of salt...i don't know how much they're informed of all the exact details...either way i agree with you, i hope they do accept alot of us waitlisters!

Quick update: No movement yet -- possibly at the end of the week. I have been quite impressed with the admissions staff and how willing they are to help. I've made many inquiries and have always received a quick response.

Anyway, maybe we'll know soon... 😕

I'm pullin' for you guys! If the squeakiest wheel gets the admission grease, then Forensic Chick and Brian Enriquez are shoe-ins!

I'm starting on August 11th and I sincerely hope that most, if not all, of those on the waiting list find their ways to Pomona. If it doesn't happen this year, don't give up and keep squeaking!!

Well... No news. Sadly, no one has been taken off of the list yet. When I called yesterday, they said that they can call people the first day of school because who ever doesn't show up the first day is disqualified. Scary to think we could have 3 more weeks of waiting... But, three weeks in comparison to the 12+ months of this process isn't that bad I guess.

I'm guessing that you're a student at Western and have some insight into the waitlist stuff... During the interview day they said that they were going to start taking people off of the waitlist in late June -- but currently they said that they haven't taken anyone off the list as of yet. Oh well -- maybe we'll get some answers soon...

I was called like 1-2 wks b4 school started (i remember cuz my boss wasn't too happy of me quitting in such short notice, supposed to give him 2 wks notice and i was like <1 wk notice), and i know someone who got called like couple days b4 we start! Yet another update. Guess one seat became available and they've filled it with a waitlister. So, congrats to the lucky person!! I recall during the interviews that they accept 2/3rds of the people from the waitlist -- but that doesn't seem to be holding true this year.

I couldn't imagine 4+ years of hard work to get into med school then not showing up on the first day -- but I guess it happens. Maybe both of us will be getting phone calls tomorrow

Seems to me a lot of people showed up today. Also, if anyone didn't, I can't imagine how they would know unless it would be tomorrow when anatomy lab or OMM starts when they take roll. But I didn't see this one person who was in the summer program, maybe she dropped. Anyways, good luck to you all.

I am 99.9% sure that each application cycle at Western is completely seperate from one another; that an interview during one interview cycle doesn't guarantee an interview for the next, that being on the waitlist during one application cycle guarantees nothing for the next... I wish I had more comforting information...
