Hi, I have a question:

Which apartment complexes in the Claremont area are big dog-friendly, don't cost an arm and a leg, and are quiet? I plan on flying out there in a couple of months and want to get a head start on which complexes to visit. Thanks!

hate to answer a question with a question but how did you decide upon the clairemont area vs. upland and chino hills?

Hi Jeff,

I haven't really settled on one area or another, but was asking about Claremont since the poster was in that area.

I have read/heard tha Claremont is a pretty nice area, though - lots of shops and stuff. Dunno if I want to pay too much more just for 'atmosphere'. Cheap and safe would be just okey-dokey.

- Tae

I heard similar things about Claremont. The medical students that took me around during the interview day said that a lot of the students live in Claremont or Laverne. I have also talked to people who know the area and they say the towns surrounding Pomona are pretty nice areas to live.

My deposit check was cashed by Western. I guess I'm checking out okay ...

On a downer note - I failed my HPSP physical for being 7 lbs overweight. 🙁

Man, I shoulda taken the physical before the holidays ...

I have to lose the weight - or reduce my body fat by 1%, in about three weeks and be reweighed.

Moo.

- Tae

how did they measure the body fat? if you are active military i think you can request an alternative method (like the big tank o' water method). i can see that it would be wierd asking them if you weren't active duty.

my physical is coming up soon as well. time for "a little less conversation and a little more action please" on the work out front for jeff.

First they weighed me, and found me 7 lbs over for my height/age limit. Then they measured my neck and stomach with a tape measure. I guess there's some ratio that determines that I am 1% over the maximum allowed body fat.

There's a CNN article I found about career military being kicked out after years in service - HERE.

I feel much worse for them because they had a lot of time invested in and no pension to speak of. And the article talks about how inaccurate the tape measure method is. I would have prefered them using a caliper or something.

Well, there's really no arguing with the military. Gotta shed them pounds I guess.

Just thought I would bump this thread a little....

So I was wondering what was your most memorable interview question with COMP ??

Mine was (not exactly verbatim) "If you were to see this patient who committed a crime, who was psychologically unstable, was to be put to death. And you as his/her physician has the choice to treat this patient. If you treat him/her, this pt would be put to death due to the the pt's "sane" status, or to withhold treatment so that the pt would live in jail due to insanity"

I know after the interview I found bunch of answers I can come up with, but I suppose it doesnt matter anymore. But it was a toughy at the moment...

i got lit up like a tree with the abortion question. 12 yr old, pregnant & raped by stepfather wants abortion. what do you do?
i guess in retrospect i did ok, but i thought for sure they wouldnt be able to hear part of my answer with the loud thud of the brick falling out of my butt in the background!

jeff

Hey folks,
Tae, I like how you have the link for the DO2007 thread at the bottom of your posts.. very smart!

As far as those interview questions go, I think as long as you showed you thought it out and didn't just jump to a solution right away without considering various options.. you did just fine. I believe I got asked questions like what were my good/bad attributes, what I could contribute to the school, and what did I think was a major current medical issue. Nothing too bad in retrospect.

Just had a renal system exam and an ICM (intro to clinical medicine) session dealing with how to give bad news to patients. What a busy week this is going to be... I have my OMM Teaching Fellowship interview on Friday!

You know- that question sounds a *lot* like the one I got at my AZCOM interview in September. And I heard that LECOM interviewees got one that sounded a lot like the one I got at AZCOM - "If you could invite three people to dinner - who would they be."

I wonder if the questions get passed around or something.

- Tae

"If you could invite three people to dinner - who would they be."

That is interesting. I have a friend who interviewed at University of Arizona got one of those exact question.....

Melancholy,

Oh yes, the interview! Good luck buddy. Hope we can both get on board for the fellowship.

Hi everyone,

My eye is healing quickly, so thanks for your thoughts 🙂 Ppl were trying to date my bruise (since we're in the dermal system) but I guess the injury was deeper than most bruises-- so can't date it.

Melancholy- I hope you'll get the fellowship so you can graduate with us 🙂 Haha!

Anyone coming in with musical talents? I'm trying to put together a talent show at the end of March, and it'll be nice to have a continuation next year.

NewAgeDO,
Montclair Clinic wasn't too bad last night, huh? Anyway, good luck on the interview today.. it'd be awesome if we both became fellows!

Hello All!

Congratulations to those who have been accepted

It has been a while since I posted on this forum. I have also been accepted and decided to attend COMP 🙂 I got my physical forms as well. What a hassle to deal with those immunization. The person who did my physical ordered a CBC for me but forgot to order tests for titer (as my vaccination record is not complete). So I got poked twice. Well, they are at least free! Also need to take chest X-ray because I had BCG vaccine from Asia (I immigrated here) and will always have a positive PPD.

I should stop grumbling. I understand that the summer intensive anatomy program is competitive and I have not received an application from COMP. I got the preparatory/introductory anatomy program application instead. Did anyone receive application for the intensive anatomy program?

And, how do you guys deal with class this semester. It was rough for the past couple years because I wanted good grades. It seems that I am loosing focus on my classes this semester as I already know where I am going next school year. I do enjoy my classes but I believe I am lacking motivation to study like before. Anyone feels the same way?

Thanks Tae for the pics (backtracking a couple pages of posts). It is nice to see the face of my future classmates 🙂

Same here - false-positive Mantoux.

I don't recall which one I got, only that I can't go to either in any case, since my wife is expecting in June. I am pretty jealous of the people that are going! I'd also feel less nervous about tackling the first semester/first year if I had a chance to prep. Oh well.

Thanks Tae for the pics (backtracking a couple pages of posts). It is nice to see the face of my future classmates 🙂

Hey, you know - that's a great idea! I have some web space, and I'd be happy to host people's pics if they want to put them in their sig line. Hmmm ... what do people think?

- Tae

hi guys..
I finally decided to attend COMP.
what a hassel to go through..
Now,, I sent in the $300 for the anatomy course during summer.
Since, I live in LA so no problem for me to attend it..
anybody from LA? or UCLA??
by the way, do you guys know if i should be done with the immunization thingi before the anatomy course?

Welcome sarang!

I think it is a good idea to get the immunization done. Unless you know that your record is up to date, otherwise, I believe it is good to have an early start. Because my immu record is not up to date and I am from a foreign country, I have to do blood test for titers, etc. and that takes time.

The Anatomy prep program sounds like fun!

I just got the laptop specifications for COMP - and the request for the second $1K deposit. 😉

Toejam - you were looking for this - yes?

I'm sure you'll all get it in the mail like me, but if you must know This Minute:

the minimum requirements -

CPU 500MHz Celeron, Pentium III, AMD K6-2
Video 8 MB RAM
Memory 192 MB
Hard Drive 10 G
Floppy, CDROM, Windows 98,2000, or XP
MS Word, Powerpoint, Outlook Express, IE 6.0, Ethernet and Modem

Hmmm - basically any laptop made circa 1995+ should fit the bill - seeing as how the AMD K6-2 laptop CPU is no longer being made. 😀

Oh, and the paper specifically says that the Western/COMP IT Dept does *not* support Apples. I wouldn't worry about it too much, though - the only connection between your hardware and theirs is really going to be an Ethernet jack (or wireless, if I can convince the right people - muhahah).

That being said, so long as your laptop is has the correct TCP/IP settings, there should be no problem with it being an Apple or otherwise.

hi! my name is jessica and i was just accepted to COMP!
like tae, i will be coming from Boston too. thinking about moving makes me ill, but i'm excited. no more blizzards, no more icy sidewalks, no more earmuffs and matching mittens (lots of shee shee peeps here) and no more shoveling!

i'm originally from florida, went to college in atlanta, ga and graduated '99, grad school in boston and am now working at one of the hospitals here.

i'm looking forward to meeting all of you! sounds like a good group! i've been reading about all the housing suggestions -- keep them coming cuz i know NOTHING about the area (i know NOTHING about california either) and would appreciate any advice! jc

Hey,

My name is Jake and I'm getting ready to send in my second deposit. I am still waiting on one school to tell me their decision, but more than likely, I will be going to Western. I really like the school and am looking forward to coming. I was in the Marine Corps for 5 years, got out went to Saddleback for a couple of years and then went to UC Davis. I just finished my HPSP app and hopefully the Air Force will be paying my bills for the next four years. I will be living in San Clemente, which will be quite a commute, but I will be able to live rent free on the beach with my girlfriend in our own apartment (her grandma owns it). You can't beat that! I will look forward to meeting all of you.

~Jake

Just sent in my $$$ to COMP!!! Thank goodness the acceptance letter came in before I sent in the 2K to TOURO! I enjoyed the TOURO interview, but COMP is the school for me for sooo many reasons. InLaws live in downtown LA, can anyone tell me how feasible it is to commute from LA to campus?

Aloha tae, I read that you're from HI... I went to UH-manoa for a year then moved to Washington. I got an invite to interview at UH-JABSOM, but am thinking of declining b/c of their accreditation problems, plus I'd rather live in Cali.

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone! Does anyone know when the first day of school is? Let's make every effort to keep this thread goin'!

Hey, Jess... remember the adobo you promised me!

cocoNUT - I WILL COOK ADOBO FOR YOU! wow, you remembered.

anybody see that kevin spacey movie? The Life of David Gale or something like that?

where is everybody? are tae and i the only east coast peeps?

I've been accepted to COMP, and was hoping to find some additional housing information in the forum. My wife and I are really looking to purchase a house in the area or I should say surrounding area (i.e. upland, fontana, chino hills, claremont, perhaps even as far out as riverside, ect.). Are there any students at COMP that are also purchasing a home (as opposed to renting an apt/house)?

We have come to the conclusion that we may have to purchase a townhouse due to the area's high home prices. We did see some decent homes in the upper 150's to 180's, which is basically the price range we're looking in.

I was simply wondering if there are any others out there attending COMP (or plan on attending COMP) that have purchased or plan to purchase a home? We really don't want to be throwing our money away to rent. Any feedback would be appreciated, and I look forward to seeing you all in the fall.

hey--

i have also finally decided to attend COMP. im about to finish up my undergrad at ucla, so im pretty happy i'll be staying in the LA area. i dont know if im going to attend the summer anatomy course, but im still undecided. anyways, cant wait to get started, where are you all planning on living??

Hey coco! I'd rather live in Hawaii, 'cause I got family there, but I'd rather go to COMP than UHJABSOM. They've got enough problems to make the choice pretty easy.

No plans, on buying a house anytime soon, just a lot of wishful thinking ...

I'm assuming that you plan on staying in California for residency, to maximize the equity in your home?

- Tae

I'm actually open to moving for residency, as although the equity buildup in 4 years isn't alot, it still beats throwing money away to rent. Certainly, there's the possibility of depreciation in home value, but I really don't see that happening.

I will be new to the California area, however, it seems that it would cost $1000-1200 for a decent 2 bedroom apartment. With interest rates the way they are, $1100 dollars can be a mortgage payment on a fairly decent home($150,000-$180,000). Currently, we are only using the internet in our home searches, and it seems like there are some nice houses in that price range within 30 minutes of the campus. I think we could definitely find a townhouse in that price range.

My wife and I are in the early stages of home research, so perhaps it could be wishful thinking, but it is an option we are seriously considering, and perhaps there are other COMP students in the same boat that have decided to buy rather then rent.

Now, is that $300 dollar program the same as that intensive program? Not too sure how many summer programs are there?
Anyone think of doing it? Im seriously considering it.

We also talked about buying versus renting, and came up with pretty much the same conclusions - 4 years of equity would at least be cheaper in the end than paying market value rental prices. Buying will save you money in the long run.

But, we have a baby on the way, and our move is from the East Coast, so most of our savings is already earmarked for that, otherwise, we'd be asking the same questions you are!

Buying would probably save us a lot of headaches in finding a rental in terms of safety, allowing dogs, affordability.

I wish you guys luck! If the numbers play out right for you, I'd love to hear about it!

- Tae

Shanet, my hubby and I are thinkin' of buyin a house too! Houses are considerably cheaper in the LA area (30 - 40min from COMP), but I have no idea how the environment is (crime, gangs, etc). An insider's view would be greatly appreciated! Houses around Claremont, Chino Hills, etc. are outrageously out of our budget range!

I was also lookin' at townhouses in the same price range, but don't they also have association fees tacked on? Does anyone know about the property tax and insurance rates in soCal? How about the likelihood of getting a loan approved with me being a student?

I am hoping to be able to secure rotations and residency in soCal. My poor hubby has had to be transplanted waaaayyy too many times (undergrad, internship and now medschool). But he's such a great sport about it all!

If we can get a house w/ extra rooms, we might rent out to fellow COMPers. Chilipina, how 'bout you move in so you can cook me adobo all the time... tae, you can come over for lunch! Bring the dogs so my lil' boston terrier can have some playmates!

Hi all,

Long time no post. I've been reading up on the previous posts and I'm getting so excited for you all!! Congratulations!

As for wireless internet connection, they don't have it here. My laptop comes with one built in, but I was disappointed to find out that they have the ethernet jacks everywhere but no wireless 🙁 It's okay though, because I practically live at school anyhow.

About the summer ISSAC program (summer anatomy course), it's nice if you want to get part of anatomy out of the way, esp. in the first semester because it's so hectic. But remember, you'll finish with the rest of the class in Head & Neck. During the 1st semester, ISSACers have to tutor classmates in anatomy. I didnt' take the summer course, (but Melancholy did, so you can ask) and I did okay in anatomy. So don't worry about it. If you want to enjoy your one and only summer off, take it off. Go to Hawaii, Europe; have some fun!

Housing: I'm renting so I don't know much about buying a house, but you all should check out www.pennysavers.com for postings. I've seen some good deals in there. If you're renting, I suggest getting out here by April to start looking because all the nicer and closer to campus places are usually booked by June.

Okay, I have to get back to Neurosensory. This system is kicking my butt!! Well, it's supposed to be the hardest system this year, so I just have to push. Good luck you all!

If there are enough dog owners at COMP we could probably form some sort of play group. Ditto for the babies and kids.

Hmmm, it would take less than $100 to put in a wireless access point in each lecture hall. Once you go wireless ...

Are they booking by June for a July or August move in? I only ask this because I won't be moving in 'til August. If I need to secure an August move by April, then fine.

- Tae

Tae,

Most apts would know of vacancies 3-4 months ahead of time, so you would need to put down a deposit for August. I went looking in June last year and my top choices were all booked. That's why... I guess you can do a 6 months lease and move later, but that's a hassle too. Just giving you a heads-up. So no worries, just come & look early.

Ah, but I got a little bit of a problem. You see, the earlier I go - like in April, the less chance I would have of finding a cheaper private house or apartment available, as those types of rentals have a shorter turnaround time. So, although I would love to have my pick of the larger apartment complexes, I also want to be able to look around for a comparable but cheaper private apartment or house. Like in May for an August move in date.

My line of reasoning is that May is still enough time to have a good choice of larger apartment complexes, but close enough to August that there will be listings in the local paper for places available in like two months.

Do they really go that fast?

- Tae

P.S. What *were* your top choices, if I may ask? Are they dog-friendly?

Hey guys, what's this about a merge w/ Chapman Univ??? It sounds like it won't happen for at least a year... but then what does that mean for us, med students (I love the sound of that!)? Probably won't affect us, class of 2007. Maybe in a few years they'll offer combined MD/JD programs you think?

Shanet74: I am a COMP 2007 acceptee from Redondo Beach. We just bought a house in Ontario in a neighborhood that's trying to clean up. In fact, the city has several programs to help new homeowners landscape, paint, etc. Grants are given based on your combined income (as long as it's below $42K, you'll qualify) In short, Ontario is trying to get rid of it's bad image.

Our info: 3 BR, 2 Ba, 7500 sq ft. lot = $191K with a 5.25% FHA loan our mortgage payment is $1490. Also, you may be eligible through CHAFA to borrow your downpayment.

As for the neighborhood, I have no illusions that I'm in Chino Hills. That said, I'd much rather have an eclectic community than a homeowners association rep constantly telling me what I can & can't do. I love it here. One side of my block is a little problematic, but I know that you cannot be insulated from every danger. The Ontario PD is very proactive and recently came by to tell us about our neighborhood (long story) All in all, I'm so glad we'll never have a nasty landlord again!

Another bit of info for everyone renting. Before we realized we could afford to buy, we looked for 2 br houses/townhouses and could not find anything decent for under $1600, even in cities like Whittier and Monterey Park. We paid "RentCal" $85 to get pre-inspected listings. "RentCal" promised initially that our $85 was completely refundable if, 'for any reason', we did not find a home through them. After the 90 day period, we asked for a refund and they would only give us $35. I won't go into all the details, but their contract was apparently different from mine. Live & learn.

I hope this helps. I can't wait to meet everyone and if we EVER get our patio straightened up, we'll definitely be hosting a few barbeques.

featuring: catfish adobo, pork adobo, chicken adobo !!!

sorry if anybody is mildy disgusted. but man.... you gotta try filipino 'meatloaf' someday!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it's da jams.

i feel like i'm the only 'single' person going to COMP. am i? should i find a mail-order groom? dang. who am i going to get pitchers and wings with after class?? 🙂

thinking about housing blows. cocoNUT- i'd love to play the Ferrer cook and maid... but your commute is a bit much for me!
i was just going to head over late july/august, cross my fingers and sign a lease. sounds like my plans may have to change.

i was writing a letter to a med school today:

"... however, i have decided to enroll at The Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific NOT because of the short name...." 😉 i think it's so funny. i love the acronym too, WUHS-COMP. wooooooooooooos-comp!!! one of my interviewers at TUCOM did her medical training at COMP and i remember very vividly her protuding lips - woooooos...

😀 peace, jc

hey chilipina-
I just wanted to say that I was begining to feel the same way about being single. I read all the posts and I think that I am going to be the only single person in the class. But now I know that I ahve at least one other single companion.
I was even going to start a thread about being single in med school, but then I thought that I wasn't quite ready to put myself out there like taht.
Anyways, just wanted you to know that you are not alone!

I believe it yould be DO/JD degree

It would be nice to expand the university, what do you all think about the merge?

OOOPS... I bow my head in complete and utter embarrassment😳 ... I had a total brain fart!!!

Woo.. hey folks! All the fun posts.. reminds me of how fun life used to be.... (meditating on the good ol' days)... nah, it's not so bad. We (MS-II class) just finished our endocrine system and have moved right into repro! Only a few more months, boards, and then rotations!

I whizzed by so many different topics I wanted to comment on so I'll just start blabbing...

Wireless internet- I actually recently brought this up with the Director of Network Operations at Western and it is something they are looking into for the future.. perhaps even as early as next year if there is enough money in the budget to start moving things along. I originally thought it would be simpler, but I have a feeling in order to make the entire campus and its buildings "wireless", it would take a lot more work. It would save in costs of extra wiring for ethernet ports in the future as people could bring their laptops to more places. I know that schools like Dartmouth, USC, and UCSD have some wireless areas. At any rate, it's being looked at.

Merger- There's all sorts of news here and there. You can look up articles in the LA Times and Inland Valley Daily Bulletin for a few... but you could probably find links for these articles on each school's website (www.westernu.edu or www.chapman.edu). There was a lot of buzz weeks back when the news first came out, but as far as my class goes, it's back to the normal priorities of a medical student.. heh. I do believe if the merger goes through, we will graduate under a slightly different name than WUHS if they do decide to tweak the name a little bit. We will still graduate under COMP which is the important thing. That being said, the actual name of WUHS has not been around very long (maybe 5-10 years?) while Chapman has been in existant for over 140 years. I see and hear a lot of prons and cons and things that have to be resolved before the merger would actually go through, but I have a feeling they are very very seriously looking at it. It's true.. the possibilities of joint programs and bringing more degree options for Western U. students would be interesting to say the least. From what I hear though, Chapman U. has a respectable name and quite a bit of money. As far as sharing campuses or anything like that, we would most likely stay separate as the Chapman campus is about 15-20 miles away (20-30 minute drive depending on traffic)...

Single People- Don't worry at all... I think the majority of our class is currently hooked up in some shape or form... but I'm sure the single girls get plenty of attention from the guys, single or not (haha). That probably goes for the MS-I class too. At any rate, after seeing the same faces for 8+ hours a day, you'll probably get tired of some people. That being said, there will enough time to study and still go out once in awhile to actually meet people in the outside world (which is always a refreshing thing). =)

Adobo- Sounds good... considering I used to work in a lab with almost all Filipino and Vietnamese folks and have had pot lucks, I don't know why I've never tried it. Just as long as there won't be any caninus-adobo (Sorry Tae!)

Commuting from LA- There are people who commute from around LA and even farther so it is definitely possible but depends on how much driving you're used to. It gets tiring driving home at night but depending on when classes get out, you can try and beat the traffic (although it will be going the other way) or just stick around, study and/or nap for awhile, then head back to LA.

Dogs- Don't forget the vet school should be in operation by the time school starts up! There should be more pets wandering around campus hopefully (although I "think" they are going to try a different learning system in the classroom of using animal models instead of real animals) and perhaps they'll even open up a small pet clinic too. Guess we're going to need more park space...

Summer anatomy programs- ISAC and SAPP both have their advantages... it sorta depends on what your time schedule will be that summer, how much energy and time you can sacrifice, what your living situation will be, etc. ISAC starts in mid or late June I think and it's a very intense six weeks, so it helps to have living quarters set up by then. Most of the folks in my class that did ISAC were from California. Contrary to belief, you don't have to have previous anatomy experience and I had none... you can do well without it. If you perform well enough, you can become a TA/facilitator in the fall which has lots of benefits including bonus points which will help reassure most of getting an A in anatomy. There were other people in our class that got A's in anatomy without taking any summer courses.. so it's up to you really. It's always nice to get some vacation time in as it will be your second-to-last free summer... enjoy everything SoCal has to offer! (disclaimer: I'm not from California)

Buying houses- Don't know much about them although I had a friend who mentioned there were some in Chino Hills going for about the 300-400k range.. which is pricey, but the area isn't too bad and things could be a lot more expensive the closer you move to LA. All I know is I'd like to live in a house one day so I don't have to keep on moving my stuff everywhere.

Vaccines- The earlier you can get all this out of the way, the better. If you are missing your last Hep B series by the time registration comes around, sometimes they'll do it for you during the registration process... which saves a little money because they will only charge you for the price of the shot. That being said, it's easier to get it out of the way during the summer.. TB, varicella titer and all.7

Folks from Bawstun- You won't have to miss the white stuff when you come here. It was a nice sunny mid 70's a few days ago, but it has rained the last day or two and there is some nice powder on the nearby slopes (1.5 hours away) for anyone who's into snow sports. I expect to be back in shorts by the middle of next week. =)

Ok that's enough for me. We are TA'ing the MS-I class at 8am tomorrow and I find myself waking up a quarter till every morning! One bit of good news I suppose... I found out a few weeks ago I'll be an OMM Teaching Fellow so I will have the pleasure of meeting all you folks hopefully this Fall!

Here's sort of a treat. This is a video they made for the "Tribute to Caring" gala that Western U. hosts. It has Noah Wylie from ER as well as Jon Fong, DO '84 who is the technical advisor for the ER show and an alumnus of COMP.

(Note: it's good to download this on a high-speed link as the video is a bit large).

Melancholy-

So, did you take ISAC? I recently found out that I was selected for the program, and even though I have taken anatomy in the past and have clinical experience as a PA, I am intimidated with the volume of material in such a short time. I live in So Cal and I have a family, so the load off the first semester is worth it to me. How bad is it, and is prior anatomy really not necessary?

Hi Singletrack,
Yes I did take ISAC two years ago. There were a few of us who didn't have anatomy experience and for the most part, it went just fine. If you've already taken anatomy, it will help a little bit... and having all your experience as a PA will help that much more. The amount of work is a lot to absorb, but I think it is harder for someone who has never taken anatomy before and doesn't quite know how to study for it. If you are willing to put in the time during the six weeks of ISAC, I think it could make a huge difference during the regular year regardless of how you perform during ISAC. Just know that during your six weeks, you won't really be able to take weekends off or have any sort of distractions. It's worth it in the end though. Let me know if you have any more specific questions.

Of course, some people that had previous experience declined the program because they wanted to spend that time moving or with their families which is perfectly understandable. There were enough people that got A's without taking any of the summer programs, but they did have to spend considerable amounts of time studying during the first semester... time that could've been shunted towards studying for other classes or perhaps a little bit of free time.

Thanks Melancholy, I feel better about it now. Any other SDN'ers know yet if they'll take ISAC this summer?
