Please comment on this program.Nothing on scutwork and their website.
What about the fellowship options and the quality of the program.

I read somewhere that it is a small program.... 4 spots at the CA-1 level. I wonder how new their progam is.... apparently they do about 20,000 cases per year. I like to see a bit more than that... but then again... they only have 4 spots. Hmmm.... makes you wonder about cardio, neuro, peads and regional... anybody else have rotated/trained at/ heard about west. penn???? 😀[/QUOTE]

Correction. They are interviewing for 8 CA-1 positions.

Had a med school classmate who did an elective there & thought very highly of it. Personally, my only experience was during my interview season. Unlike most programs, who send you a list of interview dates to select from & schedule by phone/e-mail, WestPenn chose to only send you a single date/time for you to like or lump. Of course, it coincided with another interview & they were happy to change my date. But, they would not do it over the phone & sent me a new single date/time via e-mail. Same conflict round 2...to which they provided a 3rd date. Essentially, after a phone conversation inquiring as to why they insisted upon handling things this way, I requested my application be officially withdrawn from their program. In my opinion, that is poor customer service & if they are willing to be so unbending for applicants, it hightened concersn about how they dealt with issues w/i the program itself. I am not fond of the "like it or lump it" attitude.

i'm currently a MSIII doing an elective in anesthesiology at AGH and can only really comment that the residents seem generally quite happy here adn they seem to do a lot of procedures. The resident i worked with today was saying that they were doing procedures like epidurals their first week while some of his friends at other programs didn't do much until almost halfway into the year. if you have any specific questions i can relay them, or possibly get an email address to pass along. i've heard that west penn offers a Pain fellowship, but i don't know much else. i have a meeting with the head honcho in critical care anes tomorrow and i can see if a fellowship for critical care exists here as well.
PM me if you think i can be of any help...

Hi Trisomy,
I am glad you came up with some information.
I wanted to know, how is the exposure in Cardio and transplant surgeries?
And what about regional blocks?
I will be there in Jan

Given the malpractice environment in Pennsylvania and the fact that we are about to elect a former mal-practice attorney as our VP, I would avoid practice of any kind of medicine in PA. Seriously, I'm around this everyday. Scary and somewhat disheartening.
