Hi all!

I've been blessed with an acceptance from Western and interviews at both Tucoms. I am wondering if it is worth the money to go on the other interviews. I'm not broke but everything is on mom and dad's tab.

I got decent vibes from Western but nothing earth moving. But it's close to home and in California where I would like to practice.

I just can't make up my mind about the interviews. I'd really like to hear your thoughts and opinions regarding what you would do or how one could decide something like this. I don't have a lot of pre-med friends and my advisor is more familiar with the east coast schools.

thanks in advance!! 🙂

First of all congratulations. I used to work around Western as a Tutor/Mentor and sure it isn't quite as safe as Touro-NV. Since you are also a so-cal native, Western is in the Heart of Pomona; not Cal Poly Side, but Pomona. It's a combination of inner-city and a small town put together. I wanted to go to COMP too but I also stayed in So-cal all my life so I wanted to be elsewhere. But if you want to save your $$$ Western may not be that bad. And their program is pretty established when it comes to producing solid doctors.

Okay now about the Touro Campus. I can't really commment about the MI campus but the NV campus is great. Brand new facilities, an enthusiastic staff, and motivated students that would make you feel like you are part of a family there. Yes, you will hear alot of the complaints from people saying "it doesn't resemble a real school" or "interpersonal conflicts with the people at the school." But in actuality, in life you will meet boogerbutts and people that don't seem to fit your persona. But as doctors, especially future DO's, we must look beyond that and be willing to treat all patients and people despite our personal preference. So just keep that in mind.

I will tell you about the MI campus when I return next week. So I'll keep posted.

The only negative part is coming up with the $2k non-refundable deposit within 2 weeks of receiving your acceptance from either TUCOM. Don't worry it goes to your Tuition, and when I went to the NV campus, it looked like the money will be well spent with nice ammenities.

Factors to consider(or what I consider when choosing.):
1. Do I feel like I will be put in a mosh pit? (Kill or be Killed mentality like in Pre-med times) or will I be challenged and pushed to my academic limits?
2. Is the facilities nice?
3. How are the faculty and my future peers?
4. Rotations
5. Board Exam passing rates.
6. Rent and other expenses.
7. Close to civilization

Anyhow, good luck to you and I'll tell you how the TUCOM-MI campus is like.😀

I'm kind of in the same boat as you. Accepted to Western, and two other schools, with a couple of interviews on the backburner. I have since canceled two of my other interview invites because I realized that one of my top priorities is staying close to home. (Originally from Fresno, went to UCSB for college, with friends all over So-cal.)

You know, I think the hardest part about choosing a med school is figuring out which factors are the most important to me. Before I interviewed at other schools outside of Cali, I thought that new facilities, and a close academic community would be the most important, but as I was there I realized that for me, they were not as important as I thought.

In conclusion to this long winded answer, I think that you should visit some other campuses if there is a posibility that you would go there. Would you buy the first car you test drove, or marry the first girl you ever dated? It can never hurt to get out there a little.
Good Luck!

I'm in the reverse situation. I got accepted to TUCOM-CA and just got an interview invite to Western. TUCOM seemed good to me. They're doing a lot of construction on the island, but overall it's actually pretty peaceful. The school's facilities looked fine, but unfortunately on the day I interviewed we weren't able to speak to any students and didn't even have one give us the tour because it was exam week. So I couldn't get a student's perspective on the school.

I'll hopefully have this decision to make soon. Goodluck.

those were the only 3 DO schools i applied to. i guess i really want to stay on the west coast. i might add harlem, but $200 is a big chuck of change.
