Hello all,
Ive been on this forum quite sometime always looking at posts and trying to obtain as muck knowledge as possiable. I am going to be a 5th year senir next year at wright state university (due to switching majors) I ahve a 3.4- 3.6 gpa and was in the army infantry for 3 years. I also am a undergraduate teaching ass. for anatomy. I will most like apply to a few MD schools but the school I mostly want to go to is NOVA however I never here anyone posting any information about how difficult it is to get accepted there, how they like it, what stats are ect ect. I have read their website several times, however was wondering if anyone could shed some personal experiences from NOVA or any place else. Maybe people who applied to there also. Upon acceptance I plan on taking the HPSP scholarship and reenter the military as a doc.

Sounds like a "what are my chances" question in disguise :laugh: But yes that would be nice to hear from some NOVA students or what-not regarding the school, I am interested in going there as well.
 
1. Do decently well on the MCAT
2. APPLY EARLY
3. Prepare for the interview

If your ecs are like anybody elses, than that's it. You do those things and then you hope for the best.
 
Don't do what I did:

1) Applied Late (october)
2) Got a 6 on VR
3) Forego interest from other schools because your "waiting" for a yes from NOVA.
 
I have not started at Nova yet but I will be going there in August. I completed AACOMAS within two weeks of it opening for the 2009 entering class. I filled out the secondary (which I received in July) immediately. I followed up with them when I had not heard by October. I got an interview and I took the soonest available interview time I could. I noticed that people were offered interviews sooner and put them off until after the new year. DO NOT DO THIS (no offense to anyone who did, I understand scheduling conflicts). Nova seemed to pretty much fill their class before the new year. Once you get the interview then relax and be thorough and confident in your answers. Know yourself, strengths and weaknesses and show your passion. I am pretty average when it comes to numbers but I know what I want and I have passion for others. Show that and they will want to train you to be a doctor. Good luck!!

Thanks and I am a she. But those are my cats so I think my fiance could have a picture of them somewhere, but probably not his as his avatar. I am looking forward to being there. I am actually a reapplicant because of some administrative errors that messed up my entire cycle last year. Reapply and you may see different results. I only got one interview and one acceptance last cycle and this time I got 10 interview invitations, went to 5 and got in at all 5. Its crazy what a difference a year can make.
 
a terry can you provide me with some of your stats? i am in the process of raising my GPA a bit and also starting to volunteer, its diffficuly becasue I work 40+ hours aweek non medical related. Im hoping my experiences in the army and as a person help me out some what. Congratulations on getting into NOVA

Sure! I had a 3.4 cum GPA and 2.9 sci GPA (according to AACOMAS, when I calculated it it was 3.1). I got a 26 on the MCAT.

I have a lot of volunteering experience and after college (Bio major/Chem and Gender and Diversity Studies minors) I worked at Planned Parenthood and now I work in domestic violence/sexual assault advocacy. I am not sure what made me an attractive candidate for them but I have a lot of personal experience with medicine and helping people. For sure, I was all set to put another 16 weeks of studying in and re-take it, but I got the yes....thank god.

I would def. advise anyone to re-take if you get any section lower than 8.
 
Hahah- I do worry but hey, they are too cute not to put up there! LOL, I am not that crazy, I think I started on here when I first got the cats and they were just little kittens then so they got their pictures taken a lot. Congrats on getting in at WVCOM!
 
A friend of mine who I spoke to told me that medical school admissions is almost a crapshoot, that adcoms often just randomly pick students they feel are most suitable out of those who are qualified. The vast majority of people who apply are qualified but few really make it, and many of those turned away clearly have the academic credentials to get into school. This rule seems to apply strongly to Allopathic schools but it seems like DO schools are somewhat more flexible, as average MCATs seem to be around 26-27 while MD schools its like a 30-31(and higher for the Ivy League MDs). I am wondering though if a few years down the road DO schools will be on par with admissions competitiveness as MD programs, especially since I hear premed advisers recommending students to apply to them.

If its any help, my stats were about 3.4 science and non-science and a 28 mcat. I also was a varsity athlete during college, worked in an ER for a year and worked as a biomedical researcher for the last two years after graduating college while taking courses.
