Hey guys,

Both my cGPA and sGPA are 3.43. MCAT is 510. I am currently completing a SMP. Assuming I do well in the program, what do you think my best options are? I would like to remain in my home state of Texas, but would not be opposed to moving. MD or DO does not really matter to me as I am interested in EM or primary care, and am aware of the stigma against DO in competitive specialities. I am interested in rural healthcare. Last 50 hours or so of my undergraduate GPA was 3.63.

ECs
~12,000 hours clinical, 911/Critical Care/Transfer EMT/Paramedic throughout school and beyond
~400 volunteering
~80 shadowing
no notable research experience
Not under represented

I am not very familiar with out of state medical schools and could use some input. I have heard schools look unfavorably toward Texas residents because of the 90% law.
Planning on applying to all of the Texas schools through TMDSAS. I plan on applying broadly to DO and MD schools next cycle if I don't get into any Texas schools this cycle. Any input is appreciated.

Apply to all Texas schools.

SHSUCOM and UH should be opening up pretty soon for applications if they haven't already - I haven't been keeping track.

I would focus your OOS applications on DO schools. There is a certainly a bias against Texas residents, and your application won't be doing you any additional favors outside of the state. The logic is 1) Well, if he got into a Texas school, why the hell would he come here? Texas is cheaper, closer, and the schools are great, and conversely, 2) If nobody in Texas wanted him, what the hell is wrong with this kid?

EDIT: Also, I love Overlord.

Apply to OOS MD schools will be a waste of money. Take your SO out to dinner instead.

You'll be fine for DO schools.
