Hey guys, first post but have been lurking anonymously for a long time.

So, theoretically, what are my chances at schools like SUNY Syracuse, Stony Brook, NYU, New York Medical, UiC (I'm a NYS resident) with:

3.3 overall GPA, 3.4 science at Univ of Chicago (not UiC)
12 PS, 13 VR, 13 BS for 38 on the MCAT. (EDIT: messed up my MCAT scores!)
EMT-B with 2 years of heavy-call work/volunteering (Chicago), roughly 20 hours a week during the school year, 60 during off time
Native speaker of 2 other languages
Extensive shadowing experience (DO/MD)
Worked in a lab, some research experience
Good personal recs from ambulance corps/prof/former employer

Add moderate extracurricular activities, head of First Responder corps at Uni, and the fact that my GPA after first year was 2.5 and I decide to do premed till junior year. Double major in Russian Languages and Bio with honors in Russian.

Thanks in advance guys, just wanted to get your opinions. Should I aim for different schools, or a DO?

It does suck when no one responds to your posts! So I'll do what I can.

Except for your slightly low GPA, I think you have a pretty good package. Your scores are amazing, you have very good ECs... As to the schools you've mentioned, NYU and UIC could be tough (UIC especially, since you're not an IL resident). But definitely keep the SUNYs and NYMC. I would add Albany as well. Also consider Rochester -- they might be a bit of a reach for you, but it's worth a shot.

I always think people should apply to a combination of MD and DO schools. If you greatly prefer an allopathic school, I would consider an SMP to get those grades up a bit -- I think you have a decent (not amazing, but decent) chance of getting in as is, but increasing your GPA will open some more doors.

All in all, I'd say you're in fairly good shape. I don't know how set you are on the New York or Chicago areas, but here are some ideas for additional schools:

Tufts
Tulane
EVMS
VCU
Temple
Drexel
Jefferson

I also think some of the Texas schools let in a decent number of OOS, but don't hold me to that. Good luck!

I would apply to a wide range of schools, from reach to safeties. I think you would be a fantastic candidate for NYMC. You have a fantastic MCAT score. Don't sell yourself short, just apply to enough programs so that you'll get some interviews. If you don't get many interviews and don't end up getting in this time around, take a year off to do research (related to medicine) or get an MPH to strengthen your app and reapply again. Usually most people have better luck the 2nd go around.

What kind of statistics do they have in the premed office (or the student affairs office, or wherever they track student success in professional schools)?...UC is known as an academic powerhouse with no grade inflation, so what really matters is how your grades stack up to fellow UC students applying to medical school...I still have a feeling you are a tad low, but that 38 will grab some attention and may alleviate some doubts that any med school may have about your abilities...

The average at UC is a 2.7, whereas a premed average is something like 3.5-3.6. Also, I am very very open to applying to OOS schools, just figured that I'd be better off in-state in terms of getting in.

Disinence2 is right, unless you volunteered to be an EMT, and received no salary, you'll need some kind of altruistic activity (need not be medically-oriented) listed on your application to show your service-oriented mentality. EMT was great for clinical exposure though.
