Hi, there! I'm pretty concerned about my chances of getting into med school are and was wondering if MD is a possibility/ if so, what schools?
I am an NY resident, but I go to a Top 10 school notorious for grade deflation (not sure this changes anything.)
GPA: 3.5 c/3.3 s (upward trend) - was originally interested in business, but switched to pre-med (couple of B-s)
MCAT: 511
Race: South Asian-American (ORM)
ECs: 2+ Years of Neuro research - publication pending
President of a non-medical community service club
Community Health Medicine Research
Hospital Volunteer (200+ hours)
Shadowing: 50 hours MD
I'm planning on applying next cycle and am currently applying to gap year programs.
Thanks!
Your chances are currently ok. Your school, if heavily name recognized, will probably help your application. However, your sGPA will definitely hold you back. I think you are likely to have a good shot at mid-tier schools, and it is definitely worthwhile to apply given your extracurricular activities, GPA, and MCAT, but just be aware that you probably have between a 40-60% shot of admission to an MD school with your statistics.
If you want to improve your chances before you apply, which might be a good idea, my suggestion is to do a post-baccalaureate program. You must do exquisitely well in this program to improve your chances, but that would certainly give you a great shot given that you have a good MCAT score. I would suggest that if you apply this year, you put in applications to at least 4-5 DO schools to improve your chances in addition to 15-20 mid-tier schools and your state schools.
