Research:
Currently looking for clinical research opportunities

Volunteering:
Clinical: ~500 hrs at hospital (ED, ICU)
Non-clinical: ~ 200 hrs volunteering for non profit organizations across all years of undergrad

Shadowing: 80 hrs shadowing an internist , family physician
Extracurriculars: Played inturmurals across all 6 years of undergrad other than that not much
Employment history: Worked 6 years as a teaching assistant at a private tutoring company , sales associate at multiple retailers all throughout university ( part time)
- Currently interviewing for a sleep technologist position at local clinic.

I want to know what my chances are at US DO schools at this point. I’ve been applying to multiple research positions but no luck yet. I do have an upward trend but I’m not really sure how much that will help in terms of my application. Looking for some advice please help. I am a Canadian student and I do not have dual nationality for the US.

Are there any DO schools or MD that look a certain last number of credits , I know Noorda pays attention to last 60 but that’s all I could find.

To follow up, internationals need to be superstars, and I have yet to see any evidence that MD schools reward international reinventors.

Would you recommend maybe an SMP , I’ve been looking into Boston Mams and Georgetown. It is high risk high reward but what scares me is the 50k-60k id be spending on the degree

Your GPA makes you a good fit for SMP's as long as you can hang and post a 3.7+ upon completion.

Have you done any networking with any USDO or USMD schools? We do have a few posts running with Canadian applicants to DO schools; MD schools don't tend to take that many Canadian/internationals. You may be better off doing that for the next few months (as well as check out any SMP's). You can put in an SMP application by spring to get a late summer start (August) but make sure you ask about immigration issues that you need to surmount.

As a Canadian reinventor myself, I'd really warn against an SMP given the high price tag and high risk -- as Goro (who is renowned for his advice and helped me a ton myself) said, international students need to be superstars to even be considered. Even the schools that will consider international applicants are risky -- look at their MSAR and see how many international students they've actually reported interviewing and/or accepting in their historical data (I think it goes back for the past 5 cycles) and the numbers are pretty telling.

Everyone wants those secondary fees, nobody wants the risk of graduating a student who is unable to contribute to their >98% match rate due to visa issues or ineligibility based on citizenship status.

Feel free to reach out but I will be transparent: I pursued a US post-bacc ($$$$$$) and a US graduate degree ($$$$$$$$), and was extremely lucky to have the support of my family while doing so. I managed a high GPA in both and a respectable, not stellar, MCAT score. I applied twice after my academic reinvention journey and had more luck the second cycle.... after becoming a US permanent resident. That's the only reason I matriculated this year.
