What are my chances for MD and DO, and what schools should I apply to?

Hey everyone,

I just got my MCAT scores back today and I am really happy with my score, a 506 (126/124/129/127)! I know that this is not the 'best' score out there, but I worked hard for it and am proud of myself. I wanted to lay out my ECs and GPA thus far to get an idea of where I should apply.

Major: Public Health, B.S. (expecting to graduate in December 2017)
State: South Carolina
cGPA: 3.910
sGPA: 3.798

Research:
  • 1 semester in an Organic Chem Lab
  • 2 Years of independent research in Public Health (awarded grant 1 year into research)
  • 1 publication in undergrad research journal
  • 1 publication being prepared for submission at the moment (first author on both papers)
  • 1 conference oral presentation
Shadowing:
  • 60 hours shadowing in cardiology, surgery, anesthesiology, and radiology
Volunteer (Non-clinical):
  • ~100 hours with church - over 4 years
Volunteer (clinical)
  • ~350 hours (and growing) at local hospital - over 1.5 years
  • started by helping out in Admitting and currently work as a Ambassador for the program mentioned below.
Leadership/Work:
  • 15 hours a week tutoring multiple subjects (specifically Gen Chem 1 & 2, Biology 1 & 2, and Organ Chem 1 & 2) - have been employed here for 2 years
  • Program Coordinator Intern at my hospital - helped a physician and my volunteer director start a program that aims to recognize the uniqueness of each patient. We interview the patients to find out their life story, write up a narrative on them, and present it to both the patient and the clinical staff (I love this program, and could talk about its impact all day!). Since the founding of the program, I have assisted in managing the program, recruiting for the program, and training new volunteers/ambassadors.

Definitely apply to all your State schools, Mercer, MCG, FSU, and similar schools. Then UNC, Wake Forest, Georgetown, Emory, Vanderbilt, UM, and similar schools as reaches.

Any DO should be fine (except Maybe Rowan and Michigan State)?

The only caveat I'll add is that FSU is not OOS friendly.

I have almost identical stats as you, also from GA. I received two MD interviews this cycle from state schools, so you should have a decent shot!

Explains A whole lot! I received Zero love from there despite the competitiveness of my stats lol... I should've known

Yeah they are very upfront about wanting in state students that plan to stay in state to practice, especially in rural communities. Even if they interview OOS (which is still pretty rare) there has to be a clear indication that they will stay in Florida afterwards. I've seen really high stat students looked over for that reason.

I'm bummed I didn't get an interview at FSU. Although I live in GA, I've worked in Florida full time for 3 years. I'm so far south in GA, that FSU is the closest school to me, and the 2nd closest is UF! I wish they took that into consideration.

I purchased the MSAR and spent the afternoon hashing out a list of M.D. schools I am considering applying:

  • University of South Carolina School of Medicine - Greenville (definitely my first choice in terms of schools) (state school)
The remainder in no particular order yet:
  • University of South Carolina School of Medicine - Columbia (state school)
  • Medical University of South Carolina (state school)
  • Rosalind Franklin SOM
  • Geisinger Commonwealth SOM
  • George Washington University SOM
  • Indiana University SOM
  • Lewis Katz SOM (Temple)
  • Marshall University SOM
  • Medical College of Georgia
  • New York Medical College
  • Penn State University College of Medicine
  • Tufts University SOM (reach school)
  • University of Arkansas College of Medicine
  • University of Louisville SOM
  • University of Miami SOM (reach)
  • University of Missouri - Columbia SOM
  • University of Missouri - Kansas City SOM
Tell me what you all think. Any I should delete? Any I should add to the mix? Keep in mind this is only M.D. schools.

Temple

Jefferson

Drexel

WVU

Rosy Franklin

MCW

SLU

Creighton

Loma Linda (but read their list of don'ts)

Albany

NYMC

VCU

U VM

Oakland-B

Uniformed Services University/Hebert (just be aware of the military service commitment)

Netter

Your state school(s).

Any DO school. I can't recommend Touro-NY, or LUCOM, for different reasons
