Alright SDN, please be nice. I understand St. George's University is an 'uphill battle' and it's 'almost impossible to match out of SGU in the future,' oh and my favorite 'don't waste your time trying' posts, but I'm a dreamer. I attend SGU, 2nd year student, and I'm doing really well. I've passed all my classes with flying colors (unifieds, OSCE's, midterms/finals) and have a good GPA so far.

I want to know what the future holds for me. I'm looking into pursuing an EM residency, but also am really open to IM --> Cardiology --> Invasive Cardiology route. What scores do you think I need to get on my step-1's to obtain an EM residency? How about IM? What does the future hold for me as an SGU student and future SGU grad (2019)? Did I waste my time attending SGU? All opinions are welcome! Constructive criticism is nice, just be polite is all I ask, be honest, but polite. Thanks =)

For EM see page 40 (it should be quite a bit less likely by 2019, though) . http://www.nrmp.org/wp-content/uplo...tional-Medical-Graduates-Revised.PDF-File.pdf
Cardiology fellowship applicants from IM programs that have a full time academic cardiologist (preferably a fellowship director) to provide them a strong letter have a leg up on the competition.

Not entirely sure about how SGU grads are looked at in terms of cardiology --> invasive cardiology after IM. IM is completely doable though. I've known a few who have matched IM as a SGU grad. It may be a little tougher than let's say an American MD/DO going the same route.

I would also make sure to find Carib friendly residency programs. They're quite a few hospitals in the Northeast that I've seen accept quite a large amount of SGU/Ross grads into their residency programs.

Your "chances" of matching into EM are wholly predicated on the following:
  • Getting excellent Step 1 and Step 2-CK scores
  • Having good LORs from faculty at EM programs
  • Applying broadly in the Match, and to programs that have accepted prior residents
There is a track record of programs that have accepted SGU students into EM in the past. All that matters in the end is that you train in an ACGME-accredited program that issues a program certificate recognized by the ABMS and are board-eligible. Hospitals and/or large contracting groups only care that you are (eventually) board-certified in your specialty (i.e., the days of the Internal Medicine doc hoping to work full-time in the ER are numbered...).

This is the 2015 Match list (consolidated) from their website:

Anesthesiology 17
Child Neurology (N) 2
Diagnostic Radiology 5
Emergency Medicine 37
Family Medicine 148
General Practice 4
Internal Medicine 358

Internal Medicine/Pediatrics 6
Internal Medicine/Psychiatry 1
Internship 2

Obstetrics & Gynecology 27
Orthopaedic Surgery 3
Pathology 10

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation 1
