I recently got back my Step 1 score of 22x. I posted a similar question in another forum, but I was hoping to get some insight from the folks who are already in or preparing for IM residency. To describe my individual case better, I got 22x on step 1, was fortunate to get into a top 5 medical school, and have 1 first author publication and a few abstracts published.
What I'm worrying the most is how many of the top IM program have a cutoff set for Step 1 score (I heard it's around 230 these days), and so at a lot of the programs, my application along with my clerkship scores, Step 2 score, letters, etc. won't even be considered. Would less prestigious IM programs (I mean no disrespect) enforce less strict cutoff points?
Most importantly, I know that these are big assumptions to make but given that I will be doing well on my third year clerkships, get an honor in IM, get a good Step 2 score that could at least partly make up for the poor step 1 score (say >=255), and get decent letters, would I still have a shot at matching into IM programs with good name values? (say top 60 programs).
