hello everyone,

i am applying dental schools this coming june, and UCLA is my first choice. what the following info is what i got so far

GPA 3.4
DAT 21
4 years working experiences in a dental office
general biology major

i know my gpa is not good enough if comparing with others, however, i think most schools not just only look at gpa and dat scores, they do look at ROL + shadowing too, but i dont know how much my working experience and ROL would help me to get a bigger chance to get into UCLA, so I need the help from you guys, and of course, some good advice! thank you very much. 🙂

This information is not enough to evaluate your situation. Let us know your DAT breakdown (for instance what did you get in your PAT section? Did you have sections below than 17?). What is your science GPA? Have you ever shadowed under dentist? Did you do research?if you did;did you publish papers? And etc!!!

My overall gpa is currently a 3.76 and my science gpa without math is 3.27 and my science with math gpa is a 3.34. My major is bio with chem and engineering as minors.
I have shadowed multiple dentists and have done undergrad research (no publications though). I am involved on campus and have good extracurriculars.
I have not taken the DATs yet but plan to take them in June.
My first choice is University of Florida and then Nova Southeastern.

I was planning on sending my AADSAS app in for the 2010 cycle this coming June 1st. However, I just received my orgo II grade which came out to be a "D".
I know I have to retake it, but would this hurt my chances of being picked for an interview to these schools or any school for that matter?
Should I wait and apply next year since I would still have to take Biochem after orgo? Is there a way to explain bad grades on the AADSAS?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Apply June 1st (if you want to risk your money, maybe you can be little bit picky with the schools that u will apply), then you will have chance to upgrade your status.Dont worry about org😵ne D will not affect you that much. If you cannot get into anywhere, try to improve your appl. with research, shadowing and higher GPA. You can try your chance or the next cycle.Good luck

I think that your scores are not stellar, but it will put you in some schools if you play your cards correctly. Your 19 PAT is average as well as ur current science GPA. Your 21 academic av. and being a dent. assistant are your strength. Apply right schools, then you will be able to get in. I think your chance is slim for UCLA, since UCLA is one of the top choices of not only many California but also many other residents. However give it a shot, hopefully your dreams will come through 👍.

will a rec letter from a UCLA faculty help?

I am not an ADCOM, but I think that it can help.

u think that have an interview before december 1st is a good sign to be accepted? will schools call you once they decide to take u in?

thanks ucfan...🙂

however, in addition to the "D" in orgo 2, i got a "C" in orgo 1 and a "C" in physics w/ Calc .....i am at a crossroad😕. do you think i should apply once i get take the DATs or wait? what schools would you recommend me apply to if i get a 19 PAT and 19 as my academic avg with the current sci gpa of 3.3 and an overall gpa of 3.7?

Do not worry about individual grades. The key is your GPA(s) not individual grades. I do not know which schools you will apply, but look at doc_toothache's wonderful tables (check the link). Look at your status, which are closer to yours. If you have a lot of ECAs,research skills, and/or dental shadowing, you can get into schools which accept students with little bit higher status than your status. I still think that your chances are slim for top notch schools according to the list (such as Suny SB, Harvard, UCLA, Colum.). Be smart when you apply, make sure that apply some schools that you have more chance. Good luck 👍.

Your stats are really good and you'll def get in somewhere. However, UCLA is a long shot, honestly. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Apply to 8-10 schools and you'll get in. Good luck.

Why is UCLA a long shot for the OP?
he/she has a 3.4 21 and UCLA's average is a 3.6 21.

Hello,

so you think I still have a chance? I heard UCLA GPA range is from 2.9-4.0. which means I am not totally hopeless, right? 🙂 good luck on your everything.

How do you have "about" 19. its either 17,18,19,20 etc.

do you have a breakdown of your scores? that'd help us see if you chances are better or not
