Hey everyone I'm posting again with more detailed stats and activities to get a better idea of an ideal school list. I applied the last cycle to 14 schools and received 1 interview which resulted in a waitlist. Another thing to note is that I submitted my primary at the end of august last year and most secondaries throughout September and early October. I had a 3.97 science and 3.96 cumulative last year, and after completing a bunch of upper-level sciences in my final year of undergrad (toughest classes of my major), my GPA has now dropped to a 3.86 science and a 3.9 overall. I got a B in 3 classes but the rest were A's.
I submitted my primary application about a week ago only to one school right now (Loyola) in case I get off the waitlist for a school that literally starts in a day. Which means I'm probably gonna have a gap year and should solidify my list now.
Here's what my application looks like:
sGPA: 3.86, cGPA: 3.9 from an average public state university.
MCAT: 512 (129/126/129/128)
Asian Male, FL resident
Clinical Volunteering: 115 hours volunteering for about 1.5 years at a cancer hospital, 230 hours volunteering for a year at a free clinic. Finalizing a letter of rec from a physician at the free clinic.
Shadowing: 45 hours at a primary care practice
Non-clinical volunteering: Over 180 hours across 4 years distributing sandwiches for the homeless, 100 hours volunteering as a children's camp counselor for a summer
Research: 250+ hours volunteering in an ecology lab for 1.5 years ( got a rec letter), 110 hours in a chemical discovery lab for one semester, 80 hours mapping villages in Africa for parasite study for 1 semester.
Leadership: Founded a non-profit organization that caters to a minority religious group that I am also a part of. Have served for 4 years and accrued over 600 hours. I also led a university organization's Olympic team to 2nd place in Florida last year after failing multiple times, Accrued at least 500 hours.
Hobby: I breed fish
What I have improved since last cycle: Took additional upper-level classes, +1 year of research, +1 semester at the cancer hospital, +1 year of volunteering to feed the homeless, +1 year of being captain for a club olympic team, and of course a more timely application
Current School List:
FIU (previously rejected)
USF Morsani (interviewed here, got waitlisted and probably not getting accepted. Don't know if I should reapply given I have a lower GPA now which won't make up for my average MCAT)
FAU (previously rejected)
UF (submitted a secondary last year but didn't follow through since it was already October)
UM Miller (previously rejected)
Tufts (previously rejected)
Georgetown (didn't submit the secondary as it was already October)
Temple (didn't submit secondary for same reason)
Western Michigan (didn't submit secondary but had a good talk with a rep later who gave me advice for the following cycle)
UCF
Nova MD
Loyola
Albany
Creighton
Drexel
EVMS
Quinnipiac
GW
Seton Hall
MCW
Oakland-B
Vermont
Jefferson
TCU UNTHSC
Toledo
Tulane (am I too late for this school? Ik they have a very short interview season)
Wake Forest
Waye State
Kentucky (I heard 30% of the class is OOS)
NYU Long Island (3.82/514 avg seems feasible?)
I also applied to and either got rejected/ didn't submit a secondary to the following schools, and will probably refrain from applying to these places again mostly because I know as a reapplicant I'll be looked down upon even if its a little bit.
Emory (didn't submit secondary, I think they're a reach for me now)
St. Louis (rejected, also heard their school has accredition issues)
RFU (rejected, heard they have accredition issues, and also they admitted to not even looking at my app due to the number of apps they received, so they practically stole my money as well as many others'. Check out the 2019-2020 thread you'll see what I'm talking about. It was outrageous and they did not offer refunds, I encourage everyone to stay away from this school)
Iowa (rejected, also asked for feedback and was told to retake my MCAT which I probably won't unless it expires and I haven't gotten in yet)
NYMC (hold-> rejected)
Dartmouth (rejected, don't know why I even applied here)
Einstein (rejected)
Hofstra (rejected)
Pitt (rejected)
Rochester(hold->rejected)
I'm considering some DO schools and would highly prefer programs with decent research opportunities and good residency match lists, or even affiliated residencies. From what I've heard, I have liked these
DMU
KCU
PCOM
OSU
