Hi all, I've been reading quite a lot of posts with the title "what are my chances". It seems, however, that they dissapear after receiving their results. Would anyone who experienced uncertainty (low stats) about getting accepted mind sharing some feedback on how the application process/interview went? I am currently getting ready to take the PCAT (which I am very nervous about) and have a 3.72 GPA with about a year of technician experience. I would love to know where I stand in regards to Texas Pharmacy Schools, assuming I don't do well on the PCAT.

Thanks!

If you get at least a 60, with your GPA you'll be pretty okay for most schools. I have a friend that had GPA of 3.7, no pharm experience, and 68 on the PCAT and she got into a 'top ten' state school. But, that's just her. Definitely aim higher for the PCAT tho; it's not awful, just tedious.

Thanks for the quick reply! I tend to always bomb standardized exams for some reason, so getting that kind of a score would actually be great. Also, would I have a better chance getting accepted if I applied through early decision, or would it be more competitive thus lowering my chances?

You have a great GPA and a pulse. The exam will affect your chances, but pharmacy school isn't very competitive right now. Barring a disastrous showing on the PCAT you should be fine.

Really? What makes you say that? Also, are you familiar with any Texas Schools and if that's the case for them as well?

Some of the better schools have average GPAs in the 3.5 range. You're well above that. You have a year of tech experience. If you score a 60+ on the PCAT, I'd give you almost 100% odds of getting in somewhere. Hell, if you were willing to leave Texas, you'd have almost certain odds of getting in somewhere even with substantially lower scores.

Just received my score, got a 60 on the dot. Do you think that'll be enough for acceptance?

Thanks!

I had a 3.05, 90 PCAT, and 1 year of tech experience. 2 letters of rec from pharmacists and 1 from a professor. Very few ECs but I had some volunteer experience. My interviews went very well.

I got into 4/5 of the schools that I applied to, 2 of them are considered top 10. I considered my stats low because of my GPA but made up for it with everything else.

You will be fine. The interviews are easy and predictable. Why pharmacy? Why this school? Why has your tech experience made you want to be a pharmacist? Tell me about your extracurricular activities. What are your strengths? For me they usually made comments or asked minor follow up questions which made it seem more like a conversation. One or two schools asked me what I would do if I saw a classmate cheat on an exam.

Everyone is going to say that they want to help patients but give a detailed answer that is genuine. For me, I said that I enjoyed classes like biochemistry and learning the mechanism of action of drugs and their targets interested me, and being able to use this knowledge to directly benefit patients is something that I think I would not only enjoy but find rewarding. So yes, I said I want to help patients, but I didn't just flat out say that I want to be a pharmacist to help patients like everyone else probably did.

If you get an interview offer you look good enough on paper to be accepted.
