I haven't taken my MCAT yet...

I have a 3.1 undergrad gpa. (psych degree) So long story short, I was in an abusive relationship. I had to sneak and take courses online. When my fiance found out, I had to drop them. It took me 8 years to finish my degree. He committed suicide two years ago bc I finally had the strength to leave him. When he did that, I signed up for a full load of classes and for 4 quarters, was on the dean's list until i finally graduated. I finished strong but those initial years were rough and it shows in my gpa.

Next, I got a masters (3.8) gpa in human resources and at the same time, got an associates in nursing (3.7)

I have always wanted to be a Dr. and I am in a good place in life to be able to go to school and complete the program. my concern is my 3.1 undergrad degree. When I apply to med school, will they average all my gpas? how does that work?

My psych degree and masters are from Northeastern University College of Professional Studies

My Nursing degree is from Georgia Perimeter college (RN Degree)

My options for med school:

Emory (long shot)
Georgia Regents University
Morehouse School of Medicine
Mercer

Any opinions?

youre a tough case.

especially since you dont have a MCAT its hard to tell

youve got one heck of a story

general advice will be to score as high as possible on the MCAT like 35-38 to offset your GPA

i think GPA is cumulative for all schools, they may still look at your undergrad versus postbac but im pretty sure when it all gets calculated its all lumped together

Since you havent taken your MCAT yet im assuming youre waiting til next cycle? anything this cycle would be far too late

well then study your butt off for the MCAT take it early, earlier than you think you need to to give you a shot to retake it in time. like aim for january for the first time, then april-june if a second one is necessary. That gives you plenty of time to prepare for both if necessary

Get access to the MSAR, either online or the physical one, and once you have your MCAT figure out your cumulative GPA and cumulative science GPA and use those stats to build a list of low, mid, top schools you want to go to that are reasonable.

apply the first day AMCAS opens which will be in early june. In the time it takes to get verified use that time to prewrite secondaries by searching the forums on this website, most questions dont change from year to year

that maximizes your chances of getting in

I don't think that your post-bac degrees are very helpful in letting us know if you can handle medical school. Clearly, your scholarship has improved, but I would like see how you can handle some rigorous courses like anatomy, physiology etc.

MCAT will make or break you. If you're not URM, Morehouse isn't for you. Why isn't MCG on your list?

Add PCOM-GA

I think you have a pretty great shot as long as you do well on the MCAT. Your story is incredible. They will average all of your undergrad classes and grad-level classes separately. Your RN grades will be averaged with your online psych degree grades, and your master's GPA will be calculated separately.

The fact that Regents is basically 2 schools under 1 umbrella helps.

Good luck! Also, if you haven't already, check out the non-traditional forum on this site. There are lots of career-changers and people with other degrees who hang out here and can probably offer you advice.

I am only applying to schools neat Atlanta, which is why Morehouse is on my list. I am half blk and hlaf latina, by the way. What is wrong with Morehouse? PCOM is on my list too. Also, getting a degree in nursing speaks nothing to my ability to handle a science based workload? You have confused me.

I see a lawyer that applied for medical school. Awesome. i hope to join the ranks. Any opinions of MD vs DO? I think the general consensus is they are equal but I still see that ppl have their prejudices. Thoughts?
